Hi, I’m Sherwin Saber. I am a Graph-ic Designer based in London, but I’m originally from Manchester. I

moved to London in 2013 in order to study Graphic Design at a higher level, and I feel that London is the perfect place to do this. I enjoy all

aspects of Graphic Design, however, I particularly enjoy computer based design, such as using programs in-cluding Photoshop, Ilustrator and

InDesign.

ABOUT ME

The Creative Industry Practice module is one that explores Graphic Design on a num-ber of different levels. The Under The Influ-ence Case Study uses Instagram as a plat-

form for media and design. The Thought Of The Week Study also uses social media a a platform, but this time through Twitter, by encouraging us to think about artists and their own style through our eyes and how

we percieve this. Another platform that was used in the module was digital, by the use of such programs including InDesign and

Photoshop. The module allowed us to think about Graphic Design in a completely new and different way as to what is typically

expected, as well as helping to broaden our knowledge and understanding on the differ-

ent topics and artists covered too.

These images are some examples of the close up images that I used in one of my projects. Out of all of the work that I done for this year, this was the thing that I enjoyed the most - not only taking the images but also the final outcome of them too. I used a macro-lens to take these images and I think that the quality and the detail of the images came out very well. Also, the use of the black and white in some images, and the contrast, made the images really stand out. For these close-up images, I focused on specific body parts that I could incorporate with the uncan-ny theme, such as eyes, hair, skin and moles.

These designs were ones that I did for one of

my projects in my first year of Graphic Design.

They were inspired by my passion for football.

Although very simple designs, I think that these

work very well, and it shows examples of typol-

ogy. I really enjoyed creating this certain project

as I got to combine my own photographs in my

work, and experiment with shapes, sizing, and

how things work on a different scale. I also en-

joyed this as I was able to combine one of my

biggest interests - football - into my Graphic

Design work.

These images show the journal that I made and hand-bound for my uncanny project. This was my first ever attempt as bind-ing any kind of journal, and although the binding was not perfect, I felt that the rug-gedness of it fit in nicely with the uncanny theme. Once started, I found the process of single page book binding relatively simple, and I will be using it in future projects too.

This is the advertisment that I created in order to include on my Contextual Critical Studies pro-ject regarding sexism in advertising. I created it in the way that it is in order to challenge what has become to be normal in sexism in advertis-ing. I really like this image, and I feel that the drawing itself is of a good quality. There is a few improvements however I would make to it

now looking back on it, but in all I think that the advertisment works well in doing the task that it

was intended for.

These are stills from a video that I created for a project that was aimed at creating awareness for mental health illnesses. This video was created with the purpose of raising awareness for de-

pression. The prurpose of the video was to show that although someone may have depression, it can not always be obvious or seen that this is

the case, and often that many people do not see it themselves when they have it. Alongside this, I also did a poster again to raise awareness for

depression.

UNDER THE INFLUENCE

For my project on Under the Influence, I chose the artist Barbara Kruger. I chose to study her work because it was a heavy influence on my

own style of work for some projects. As well as this, I really like the style in which she presents her work, for example, the use of bold colours

such as red, and the block print which stands out and catches the audience’s eye.

RESEARCHBarbara Kruger is an American artist. Her art work mostly consists of black and white images overlaid with delarative captions in white writing on a bold red background, as seen in these images. A lot of her work calls upon social issues, such as feminism, sexulaity and consumerism. These images are some of Kruger’s most known work, and peices that I really like.

During the development of my Under The Influ-ence Case Study, I explored and experimented with my own images in the style of Barbara Kru-ger. Examples of these include these images of Alex Turner which I have placed declarative cap-tions on in a way to imitate Barbara Kruger.

The use of the same two images but with dif-ferent captions shows what impact can be made purely by using different phrases. Personally I prefer the ‘R U MINE?’ image due to the fact that I feel as though the other image could be percieved in a way that it is not supposed to. As well as this, I also feel that the first image is easier to relate to due to the fact that it is lyrics from one of Arctic Monkeys songs.

OUTCOMES

Out of all of my work that I created during the Under The Influence project, this is my favourite. The reason that I like this image so much is that because while it does have the influence of Barbara Kruger, it also incorporates some of my own styles that I picked up and developed during the project. Whereas Kruger mainly uses white writing on a coloured background, I have used both red on white and vise versa, and this shows the influence that the artist had on my work as well as showing my own influence too.

This image is also another of my favourite peices from the project. The reason behind this is the fact that again, the influence of Barbara Kruger can be seen, but as well as this, the image does not only show my own work, but also shows other kind of art that can be seen in the image.

CCS CASE STUDY - ETHICS

For my Ethics Case Study, I chose to study and research this image taken by Kevin Cater in

1993. It was taken in Sudan during the Famine. He won the Pulitzer Prize for taking the photo-graph, but committed suicide 3 months later. There are a wide series of debates and argu-

ments surrounding the ethics and morals of this photograph, and my essay adressed some of

these, and found arguments and reasons arguing both for and against these.
