56 LuxuryReportMagazine.com LR Travel Report Curacao Sea Aquarium Close Encounters & Marine Life Education I ’m not a big fan of fin and flipper shows for profit, especially when their marine life habitats are inadequate and involve chlorine pools, but I have a special affinity for Curacao Sea Aquarium. Having an in-depth knowledge of how they operate, I know they are as much about educating about our underwater treasures as they are about researching more about what lies beneath. In fact, this is the place in the Caribbean where I received my first underwater lessons fiſteen years ago, when I spent two weeks shadowing their staff and learning all about our incredible sea life. Canadian born Adriaan “Dutch” Schrier runs the show there – another ex-pat Canuck who ran away from the cold and never came back. He started the business with another Canadian, Gordie Cox, an excellent underwater photographer, and together they began building their “institution of lower learning” back in 1984. Curacao’s underwater is ideal for deep sea exploration because it drops off to sheer cliffs right offshore, making for incredible wall diving. Over the years, this operation has discovered all kinds of cool things about the local marine life, including documenting a new species of fish! And today they offer visitors an opportunity to submerge to 1,000 ſt. below without even getting wet in their amazing four- person bubble sub (Substation Curacao), the same kind that James Cameron used to film Titanic’s underwater scenes. Closer to the surface on-site you can snorkel or dive with dolphins in the sea, hand-feed stingrays, sharks and sea turtles in the lagoon, get up close to sea lions, and explore their massive interactive aquarium which boasts hundreds of species of fish. And everywhere you go, you will learn a LOT about marine life! e entire complex is fed by natural sea water, and they are also the island’s first go-to place for rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured sea life. Also on site and independently operated is the very impressive Dolphin Assisted erapy & Research Centre, designed to assist those with special needs like autism and Down syndrome, and staffed by specially trained and extremely qualified professionals.
