Letter From The EditorDear Reader,
Welcome to the “Sneak Peek” edition of Curacao Journal.
It seemed like just yesterday when I moved from Curacao to the United States. I studied Graphic Design at the School of Arts & Science at Miami Dade College in Florida. Subsequently I stud-ied Marketing Management with a concentration in International
Business at the School of Business at Johnson & Wales University in Florida. Since 2004 I’ve been actively working in the Multimedia Design field developing my talents and gaining skillful experi-ence. Hence I have been blessed to obtain a rich background in the Marketing and Graphic Design industry.
After Living in the U.S. for over 8 years, I decided it was time to showcase my passion, and put all my experience to good use in my beloved home country- Curacao. Thus I launched Journal Publications B.V. in Dec 2009 with its first goal to publish a series of unprecedented magazines on the island.
I personally designed Curacao Journal to be the first full spectrum Lifestyle magazine in Curacao, delivering the latest trends in fashion, beauty, health, art, travel, real estate, education, dining and entertainment. Curacao Journal will be a necessity for tourists exploring the island and a staple in many local homes. In addition Curacao Journal will be raising awareness throughout the year for educational, historical and cultural charitable causes.
Producing content that is always ahead of the curve, Curacao Journal has a well rounded edito-rial staff that delivers first-hand knowledge of new trends. The staff is currently fabricating in-depth interviews with local entrepreneurs, regional celebrities, professional athletes, and chefs of fabulous restaurants and newest “it” hotspots. A read through the pages will be an infectious glimpse into hip island society.
I look forward to serving you now and in the future as we embark on a journey to explore the ulti-mate island lifestyle of Curacao!
Yours truly, Stephanie C. Dijkhuizen

Outdoor recreation has psychological benefits, including the prevention or reduction of stress; improved self-esteem, confidence and creativity; spiritual growth; and an increased sense of exhilaration, adven-ture and challenge from life. Getting outside provides physical benefits, such as aerobic, cardiovascular and muscular fitness, as well as improved functioning of the immune system. The great outdoors afford social benefits like bonding with like-minded people who enjoy outdoor activities and feeling an increased pride in your community and island. Outdoor recreation pays off with economic benefits too: People who regularly participate in outdoor recreation tend to be more productive at work. surfingSurfing seems intimidating,
especially to land-lovers, but once you know the essentials, it’s smooth sailing—and lots of fun. How surf-ing and contact with the ocean affects your health is a topic that is rarely discussed with adequate depth. The possible benefits far out-weigh the risks. Some of the more prominent benefits of surfing are general fitness, muscular develop-ment, cardiovascular conditioning, acne treatment, general skin health, hair growth, and many others. These benefits can essentially be split into two categories: The effects of being active and the effects of being in the ocean. We all understand the benefits of general fit-ness and activity, but most people don't real-ize how great seawater is for skin care, acne prevention and treat-ment, hair growth and health. Most of the downsides are the result of exposure to solar radiation, and dehydration. These negatives are easily avoided. Be sure to regularly apply a waterproof sun-screen with a high SPF. Drink plenty of fresh water or hydrating sports drinks enhanced with electrolytes. The health benefits of surfing don't only apply to your physical health. There are also the mental benefits. Surf stoke reduces stress, and often gives surfers a more laid back atti-tude about life which is actually beneficial to their psyche. The high stress of today's world is detrimental to our mental health. Physical exer-cise, especially something as fun as surfing, helps to offset the negative effects of stress.
sailingCuracao is one of the most excit-
ing places to sail in the Caribbean. Varying wind conditions make it possible to learn the basics in the mornings while flying through the air on a performance catamaran in the afternoons. There are sailboats suitable for beginners, novices and youngsters to high performance kits for those more experienced sail-ors. For beginners and novices it is best to have a professional instruc-tor teach you the basics of sailing and get you out on the water until you feel confident enough on your own with a partner or friend. You’ll
come back grin-ning from ear to ear after trapez-ing across the bay. Muscle strength is part of the health benefits of sail-ing and integral to fitness. Muscle strength increases
the body’s metabolic rate by helping the body burn more calories. Sailing helps to build up muscle endurance. This refers to how much exercise and movement your muscles can take. Flexibility and agility are also part of the health benefits of sailing. How your body moves and how fast you can move comprise flexibility and agility. In order to accomplish this many of the tasks required in sailing you must be flexible and agile especially when tacking and gibing.
Mountain bikingIf you can ride a bike, you can
mountain bike. Rolling over rocks and roots adds a bone-crunching twist to this traditionally tame sport.
Soak in these fundamentals to save face—literally. You can spend thou-sands on hydraulics, but the most important shock absorbers you have are in your arms and legs—your connecting points to the bike. When traversing rough terrain, let the bike take the hit by employing a loose grip and distributing you weight evenly between hands and feet. Heading up a hill, find a gear you can maintain for the entire ascent. Plan ahead—about 20 feet ahead. At times you’ll want to stare down that 2 foot-diameter log under your wheels, but keep one eye on the trail ahead and picture a line where you want to go. Mountain bikers are pack animals always willing to grow their herd. Stop at your favorite bike shop and ask about group rides as a way to schedule riding and meet new people. Not only is it a good safety precaution, it’s more fun.
KayakingKayaking can be as dangerous or
as tame as the skills you have and the waters you choose. Absorb these lessons to keep your head above water. Going straight in a kayak is easy. Changing directions offers the real challenge since novices easily capsize kayaks. So practice leaning in the opposite direction of your turn and using your torso, not arms, for control. It’s easier to roll out of a capsize than bail from your kayak, so try the underwater Eskimo roll (technique, not sushi): Lean for-ward against the kayak, sweep the paddle in an arc above the surface, and then yank your body (head last) toward the sky. Obviously your immobilized legs won’t get much of a workout kayaking, but the rest of your body sure will. As anyone
who uses the “rowing” machine in a gym knows, paddling really works the back. The thousands of strokes you’ll need to complete a solid ride are a tried-and-true recipe for a powerful back. Kayaking is like the inverse of running in that you’re focusing mostly on upper body car-dio, not legs. Your kayak has the potential to take you places in the great outdoors to which your bike or hiking legs could never lead. You can also expect serious stress release through some solitude in nature or the bonding of a wild coastal ride with friends.
atvExperience the adrenaline rush
of traveling by ATV over breathtak-ing routes in Curacao. Maneuver through awesome photographic scenery. An adrenaline rush is caused by a hormone release from the adrenal gland. In healthy peo-ple, the hormone release consists of 80 percent epinephrine (also called adrenaline) and 20 percent norepinephrine. It’s the body's natu-ral coping reaction for activities or environmental situations that are exhilarating, stressful or physically demanding. When epinephrine and norepinephrine are released into the body, your body's airways and large blood vessels dilate to funnel larger amounts of oxygen, glucose and blood to the respiratory system, muscles and brain. This hormone release also increases your heart rate and blood-sugar levels, improving the body's performance for the short term. If you experience adrenaline rush, you typically feel temporarily stronger, faster and more tolerant of pain.

Born in Curacao, Amit Jethani dreamt of becom-ing a rock star. From ex-
perimenting with music software to studying audio engineering, He has the knowledge and the passion for creating extraordinary music.
At the age of 25, Amit had already lived in Holland, Australia and Indonesia. In 2009 he left the comfort of the Caribbean to add another name to the list; India-the land of Bollywood dreams. Hence he was nicknamed “Loko” by friends and family, literally meaning “crazy” in Papiamentu. Thus he became “DJ Loko”, a one-stop entertainment shop being part DJ, part producer, part MC, part singer/songwriter and the list could go on. Mix crazy talent with crazy ambition and the result is equally wicked music.
As an Indian descendent liv-ing in the Caribbean with several years abroad in Holland, Australia, Indonesia and India as well as trav-eling around Asia, Dj Loko’s persona boasts of an unique cultural diver-sity which shows up in his music through distinct composition and multi-lingual lyrics. The “Loko” sound borrows beats and music cul-tures from his many hometowns, fusing it into a rhythm that can’t be classified like any other. The unique sound fuses sultry Caribbean beats with a high-energy Bollywood pulse. It’s simply “Loko”.
Through relentless online dis-tribution and social communities, the “Loko” beat is catching on with hundreds of thousands of fans world-wide watching and waiting for the latest in Loko frenzy. India
has been no exception. His tal-ent and unique sound have already caught the likes of collaborators such as Kamran Ahmed, Reeky-D & Sam Sahotra. In 2010, Loko mania went even larger with news of a record deal with Venus Records and Tapes, one of the largest and most respected music labels in India.
In April 2010 he did a multi-island tour where legions of fans had the chance to witness the siz-zling energy of DJ Loko live. Starting off in St. Thomas he entertained the crowd at The Saint Lounge. He then continued with a stop in St. Maarten at the famous Tantra Night Club. Finally DJ Loko rounded up his Caribbean tour in Curacao at Lobster House.
While the future is uncertain, one thing is clear: With a deep commitment to self-develop and learning something new every day, this multi-fac-eted entertainment powerhouse has no where to go but forward. DJ Loko is surely the ultimate crowd worker. So put on your danc-ing shoes, get those shoulders in shape and check out the Loko frenzy out for yourself, online at:

Could an old proverb writ-ten centuries ago actually relate to a 21st century
diamond cut? The answer might surprise you.
A learned teacher recently explained the full meaning
behind the beautiful verse from the Book of Proverbs
written some three thou-sand years ago, and
attributed to King Solomon. Many cul-tures regard him as the wisest man who ever lived.
But the full account, the teacher said, is even more fascinating. The story unfolds that God cre-ated everything
in this marvel-ous world--all
that we see and the
mysteries beyond our grasp. He cre-ated man to enjoy life --and created every animal on earth, in the sky above and in the sea beneath. Lastly, he created woman. It was cru-cial that she was created last of all. Because after everything was pre-pared could she assume her place as the queen for those who treasured her. So she was called the Crown of Creation.
This vivid story highlights the place of respect and honor that women were meant to have in soci-ety--their home--and in the heart of those who cherish them. Women are still the Crown of Creation to their loved ones, yet it’s been diffi-cult to show how precious they are, until now.
Diamonds International has created the Crown of Light diamond --for the Crown of Creation lady in your life. A special woman deserves a unique diamond that shows what she means to you--and the Crown of Light diamond explains it per-fectly. Don’t settle for an ordinary diamond when you have something this important to say.
The Crown of Light is a marvel of the 21st cen-
tury--a marriage of
genius in the cutting room, and of technological advancement in dia-mond manufacture. It was created for the connoisseur. The Crown of Light is a diamond with unrivaled beauty--so it’s the only one to give the lady who reigns as your Crown of Creation.
Cut with 90 expertly placed facets--nearly twice as many as a traditional round stone, this pat-ented diamond soars above the competition. The precision facet-ing, the angles of each facet--their size and shape all work to yield a stone of such brilliance, such dis-persion that its clarity and quality appear even higher than its grade. Compared with other same qual-ity round diamonds--the Crown of Light out-performs them all.
When you want to show your Crown of Creation lady what she means to you, choose the Crown of Light diamond. There’s simply no better way to convey how important she is than with the worlds’ most luxurious diamond.
Tell your Crown of Creation lady this ancient love story with a mod-ern Crown of Light diamond from Diamonds International.

FITNESS & HEALTH
How much do you value your health? Can you put a price tag on your
own health or on that of your loved ones? Obviously not, if anything, your health or that of your family is invaluable. Many people today are going back to natural remedies that humankind has been using for thou-sands of years.
In home based remedies, the idea is to use the chemicals natu-rally present in the herbs, spices and other foods to tackle the offending foreign element in the body that is causing the pain or infection instead of flushing the body with hundreds of milligrams of strong chemicals in the form of antibiotics. Though essential for chronic conditions, antibiotics are not always necessary and are best avoided, especially for a lot of minor ailments.
It is common knowledge that antibiotics kill the friendly flora and fauna along with the offend-ing bacteria or virus, thus causing the body to take longer to recover. Additionally, the body has to face a plethora of undesirable side effects such as excessive drowsiness, weak-ness, allergies and diarrhea (caused by excessive heat generated) to handle. Scientists are discovering newer positive properties of foods and finding ways to it effectively to derive maximum benefits for the body.
Natural remedies can be used to effectively treat a range of ail-ments through correct and regular usage. Whether it is boosting your child’s immune system, preventing hair dandruff, treating aches, pains
or cuts and burns. For natural home remedies, the garden is a great place to start. You could easily grow almost all the medi-cines you would possibly need at least, to deal with common ail-ments. All this at no or negligible cost, purity, without side effects and dollops of TLC (tender, lov-ing care)! Sounds too good to be true? Well, it is just a little awareness and understanding that you need to make the best out of it.

lemonSniff a lemon to lift you spirits.
The zingy fresh scent of a lemon may help elevate your mood. Scientists have discovered a link between depression and our sense of smell: Citrus fragrances—lemons in particular—directly affect neurotransmit-ters in the brain. The aromas help boost serotonin, a feel-good hormone, and reduce levels of norepineph-rine, a stress hormone.
Did you know that Cleopatra massaged Aloe

shine? Its no wonder that this herb is still widely
used in skin care today. Cleopatra used the fresh leaf
gel and so should we if we want that beautiful skin.
onionMosquito bites seem to affect
everyone differently. Some people recover quickly and have minimal itching, while others have bites that swell up dramatically and remain swollen and itchy for weeks. Onion slices are a commonly used method for reducing the swelling and itch-ing. They work well if they are applied right away, but occasionally reapplications are necessary later. Some people have also used this method successfully to treat bee and wasp stings.
sliCe an onion. this method does not work as well if you use
onions that were sliCed earlier – the onion should be freshly
sliCed. sprinkle salt on the inside side of the sliCe of onion. press the onion against the mosquito
bite. make sure that the inside of the onion, the side you salted, is the side pressing against the bite.
Depending on the situation, you may want to apply the onion for only a few minutes, or tape it on with first aid tape and leave it in place for sev-eral hours. If onion has been applied immediately, a few minutes may be enough, but if the bite has already been swelling for quite some time, you may prefer to leave the onion in place for several hours. Remove the onion when the bite stops itching and is no longer swollen.
Onion is a good remedy to have on hand whenever you need to reduce swelling. It tends to pull flu-ids out. Adding salt increases the onion’s ability to pull fluids out, but an onion slice will also work well by itself without salt.
If you are allergic to bites or stings, be sure to seek medical atten-tion. However, applying an onion slice can be helpful as first aid while you are on your way to your medical provider. Also, if you leave the onion on for several hours, beware that the people around you may complain about the onion smell!

Did you Know???Sea Stars eat with their stomachs
inside-out. A sea star’s mouth is on its underside. They prey on bivalves like mussels and clams, as well as small fish, snails, and barnacles. Sea stars wrap their arms around the animal’s shell and pull it open just enough. And then it does something we could never imag-ine - it pushes its stomach through its mouth and into the bivalve’s shell. It then digests the animal and slides its stomach back into its own body. This unique feeding mechanism allows the sea star to eat larger prey than it would otherwise be able to fit into
its tiny mouth.
