On Sunday, October 16, 2011, the San Jose
Mercury News endorsed Gilbert Wong and
Donna Austin for the Cupertino City Council. The
Cupertino Chamber of Commerce made an
identical endorsement of Wong and Austin a
month earlier, citing both candidates’ pro-
business plans and community involvement as
important factors in their endorsement decision.
There will be two open seats on the City
Council in this upcoming November 8th Election.
Former Mayor Kris Wang will be terming out and
the current Mayor, Gilbert Wong is seeking re-
election.
Highlighting the multiple challenges and
opportunities confronting Cupertino, the San
Jose Mercury News concluded that “of the six
candidates, the best suited to keep Cupertino a
pleasant, stable community are Mayor Gilbert
Wong and former Planning commission Donna
Austin.”

are some key events you won’t want to miss.
President’sMessage Is it really already November? Elections
for City Council are just around the corner on
the 8th and I want to encourage all Cupertino
residents to get out and vote. This is a very
important election, and the results will impact
the future of Cupertino for many years to
come. As you are aware, both the Cupertino
Chamber and the Mercury News have en-
dorsed Mayor Gilbert Wong and Donna Aus-
tin as the most qualified candidates. Every
vote counts, so let your voice be heard!
A good time was had by all at the Festiv’All joint mixer that was held
on October 12th. What a great networking opportunity to mix and mingle
with several thousand participants. It has been strongly suggested by a
number of members that we include this event as part of our annual mixer
calendar. If you have thoughts one way or another, please let me know.
As President of the Chamber of Commerce, I remain committed to
working on your behalf to promote the business environment here in Cu-
pertino. At the October 18th City Council meeting, I submitted a letter to
the Council, urging them to support streamlining the development permit
process. Streamlining this process will send a clear signal that our City is
committed to being a partner with businesses that are interested in either
expanding or relocating here. Please contact the Chamber if you have
additional suggestions or ideas on how the City can help your business
grow.
The Taste of Cupertino will be returning to Vallco Mall at 4:30 on Sat-
urday, November 12th. We have an even greater variety of restaurants
participating this year – over 10 - and expect another sold-out event.
Don’t miss your opportunity to win one of our great raffle prizes, including a
“Dine Cupertino” gift basket, a “Shop Cupertino” gift basket, and of course
the ever popular “Board Members’ Red and White Wine Trunks”. On be-
half of the entire Cupertino Chamber Board of Directors, we look forward
to seeing you there!

Issue #155 Cupertino Business News
By Darcy Paul, VP Legislative Action Council
People the world over wonder about the
economic success of Cupertino. How did a little
orchard-town manage to transform itself in fifty
years from a farming community to the home of
one of the most diversely-perspectived
(apologies for the use of a non-word) populations
in the world, the largest company in the world,
with a community infrastructure that has
sustained a world-wide economic recession while
pouring more voluntary private funds into its
educational system to ensure that teachers aren’t
lost?
Put frankly, and with a fully acknowledged
sense of organizational self-aggrandizement, the
Cupertino Chamber of Commerce played no
small part in the beginning. At the time this
community still contained a majority of orchard
space, the Chamber, which predated
incorporation of the City, helped create the
municipal entity. From these roots, the
community inherited strong educational values,
and a hard-working, straightforward, honest
ethos, with the groups and people drawn to the
community since then of a like mind. These traits
were not so much some kind of philosophical pie-
in-the-sky social experiment as much as they
were basic necessities of an agriculturally-based
community. Why? In agriculture, the reasons
are obvious. If you don’t water your plants, no
amount of imaginative accounting is going to
make your crop yields thrive. There is an
elemental honesty required in holding the farmer
accountable to the effort placed into nurturing the
farm or, such as the case has been in these
parts, the orchard.
This area has experienced many iterations
and forms of economic success since that time,
and to be fully honest with ourselves, we have
not all always been immune to the “easy money”
mentality pervading the business world and
resulting in the massive collapses of such entities
as large energy companies and financial
investment firms. Still, with our ever-present
spirit of inquiry, innovation, and development, we
have of late returned more solidly to our rooted
principles. If Silicon Valley has taught us
anything in the last half-decade or so, it is that
sharp behavior and a “win at all costs” attitude
are not required in order for an individual, a
company, an organization, or a society to thrive.
Sacrificing integrity, intellectual consistency, and
honesty in the pursuit of a particular aim
eventually catches up to you, even if, and really,
especially if, you obtain the goal you thought you
wanted. The ends don’t justify the means.
This is why there is cause for deep optimism
in our current environment. The emerging
generation has talent, drive, motivation,
perspective, and, most importantly, a conscience.
The current nationwide “Occupy” demonstrations,
peopled primarily by the younger generation,
belie a desire for our systems to work in a more
honest, functional manner, and show us that the
energy needed to push our mechanisms of
governance to do their job, not to look the other
way, and to regulate fairly, effectively, and
efficiently – that energy exists. To peer into the
heart of the sentiment driving these
demonstrations, you must understand and feel
the perspective captured by the internet
publication Gizmodo, which recently stated,
“Generation X Is Sick of Your” –the final word is
not fit to print in this medium, but suffice it to say,
it involves solid biological material excreted by a
bull.
Starting from this kind of foundation, the
transition into a sustainable larger economy will
happen, if we hold fast to the basic core
principles which were responsible for giving us
both great fruit and great consumer electronics.
We don’t need to “keep up with” any kind of
misguided idiocy, and we don’t need to hold forth
entertaining behavior as some kind of template
for our shared success. Instead, the defining
momentum of our times can tell those who follow
us that we all managed to be fair,
compassionate, successful, amused, innovative,
educated, imaginative, and happy, all at the
same time. This will not be easy, but the
knowledge is there, the energy is brimming, and
the enthusiasm to make it happen bubbling right
under the surface. And so, forward we go.

Assemblymember Fong wished the attendees
a Happy Diwali and congratulated the organizers
for putting on a great program. “Diwali brings the
message of love and wisdom, of the triumph of

and the ever popular crowd-pleasing Bollywood
dances.
“Diwali is an excellent opportunity to bring the
business community together to celebrate a
holiday that is very significant for the Indian
population,” said Mahesh Nihalani, the event
chair organizer. “The Diwali festival has proven to
be an excellent way to bridge our business
community with the residents of Cupertino”

Bea Rataj graduated from San Jose State University with a BS in Business Administration. She has always been passionate about helping out small businesses which is why the Chamber is so valuable to her. She decided to join Paychex because of their small business target market/clientele.
Paychex, Inc. is a recognized leader in the payroll and human resource industry, offering a variety of products and services that help clients do what they do best – run their business. No business is too small. From calculating payroll and filing tax payments to administering retirement plans and workers' compensation and business owners insurance,
Paychex gives its clients relief from administrative hassles so they can focus on their bottom line, and takes the pain out of payroll. Over 500,000 businesses trust Paychex payroll services, HR, and benefits.
Small-business owners have three basic options for processing payroll: the "do-it-yourself" method, bookkeeping software, and outsourcing to a professional payroll provider. What makes outsourcing the better choice?
Outsourcing reduces the complexity and risk of running your own payroll, while helping ensure greater accuracy, with up-to-date tax rates and regulatory information that can be lacking in a software solution.
This time of year is very exciting for Paychex. 1 out of every 3 businesses evaluate their current payroll process at this time for start in January, and look for opportunities to improve their efficiency. Please visit www.Paychex.com or call Bea at 408-857-7400 for a free evaluation.

The Cupertino Chamber of
Commerce made its endorsements on
August 26. The endorsements were
determined based on votes cast by the
Cupertino Chamber of Commerce
Board of Directors. The Chamber
extended invitations to all six candi-
dates that are in the running for two
open seats on the City Council. Each
candidate was given a 30-minute time
block to meet with the Board and
answer the same set of questions. All
but one candidate was able to meet
with the Board on August 26.
“The Cupertino Chamber of
Commerce is thrilled to endorse Gilbert
Wong and Donna Austin,” said
Cupertino Chamber of Commerce
President, Paula Davis. “Both are long
time citizens of Cupertino, great
supporters of business and dedicated
Chamber members.”
“Gilbert Wong and Donna Austin
are the best choices to support not only
the business community, but the local
community as well. During these tough
times, we really need to put our support
behind people we know are going to
help us all,” said Davis. “Vote for
Donna and Gilbert this November.”
