What did I notice

• What did I notice about the fantastic musical work of art?

• I saw colors, heights, emotions, levels, changing in casts, background pictures, groups of people, dancing, facial expression, characters from the first movie “The Wizard of Oz”, movement, running, stopping quickly, the use of props, body improvisation

My noticing con’t…

• What did we hear? We heard projection of voice while singing solo’s, group chorus singing when the characters all came together, we heard different rates in the pitches of the actor/singers voice, echoing of the voice, change up of the performers voice ( high to low, sqeeky, to soft ) what fit the piece.

What are my questions?

• Who’s idea was this? • How many people are in the cast?• How long did it take to put the show together?• Does it cost a lot to fly a huge cast from city to

city• How many rehearsals did it take before it was

perfect?• Would you change anything?• Do you want to make a third performance of

any kind?• What did you do with the costumes after?• When will you next be performing, and where? • When is it time to re-cast, or the cut off for the

age of performers?

Historical Context of Work • Stephan Schwartz’s imagination flashed throughthe

implications of a backstory Schwartz’s imagination flashed through the first performance he had made, “ Wizard of Oz.”

Schwartz speaks the best way he came to realizing such an amazing idea of seeing through the witches point of view would be, “ Defying Gravity”… that is how it all started.

My Personal connection

• My personal connection was the beauty of the art of performance of dance. I appreciate performance more than anything in the world, watching someone else perform something so wonderful, something I am not able to do. I am connected by the beautiful colors, and the engagement that is brought when I hear the songs performed, the story that is told. I am a little girl at heart, the Wizard of Oz was one of my favorite movies when I was a child, when this came out I was so excited!

• I am also connected by the way they use emotion in such strong powerful movement and song.

• The colors of all the scenes set a tone of the mood, and explain everything without words, it connects you into the story they are bringing to life.

• I always wondered what it would be like if this were a real story, and each time I watch it, it makes me more and more intrigued into a land of “oz” and song.

• Wicked is a connection on so many levels, emotion, movement, song, personality, dance, theater, love, friendship, growing up but in a way that makes you want to be on stage singing and dancing with them.

The curricular connection

• Art – I would have the children draw out their favorite scene

• Math- Different objects shape wised

• Social Studies- Look up the time period the costumes where in that were performed in

• Music – tell me about your favorite song in the performance and how it relates to you

• Writing- talk about my favorite song and why

Lines of Inquiry

• Aesthetic - Why was the performance Wicked so intriguing in their portrayal of the various elements of art i.e. line, color, prop’s, movement, form, space and value; principles of designs i.e. balances by actors, proportion of props, rhythm ,beat, sound, and social context?

• Pedagogical -- Why do so many artists and nonartists use music, movement, emotion, facial expressions, singing, and dance as a form of expression in such a performance as Wicked?

Page 12: Cumullating%20project%20 frawley

Line of Inquiry

• How did they get the Nessarose to fly in the air?

• How many strings did it take to holdNessarose?

• Is there chaos in the dressing room while changing?

• Is there special effects needed?

• If something such as music needed for the play broke that day, what would you do?

• What kind of instruments do you use if any?

• How long is a normal play last?

• In between acts how many people does it take to change scenes

How does it relate to Aesthetic Education?

. This performance relates to Aesthetic Education through creativity of the art, how the performers used a story and turned it into a completely different point of view. Another reason it relates is through song and dance, movement, and emotion. It lets a story be expressed within ideas of creators. Many colors and improvisation are used throughout the performance
