Gokula Beech - Explanation

In this chowtaal, the poet describes Lord Krishna’s birth place. When He was born He was welcomed by Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva with their consorts. The devtaas, yaksh’a gandharva’s, and all people of Gokul also welcomed the Lord's incarnation as Krishna

The poet notes how the people of Gokul used to touch Lord Krishna’s feet and get blessed . The chowtaal goes on to describe the Lord’s miracles, remembering when Lord Krishna destroyed all the demons including the witch Poothana who was sent by Kamsa.

The poet describes how the people of Gokul lived with Lord Krishna when He was growing up. They enjoyed the Lord’s presence and they were always happy to see Him, touch Him, kiss Him and get blessings from Him, even we can also imagine if the Lord Himself comes and live in our village, how happy we will be.

The poet tells the story of when Lord Krishna was a child, He punished Kaliya who was poisoning Yamuna. Lord Krishna deliberately threw the ball in to the water of the Yamuna river to punish the demon Kaliya and to save the people and cows and other living creatures.

Lord Krishna ended up dancing on the heads of the snake demon and playing the flute.

Raghunandan - Explanation

This poem explains how Lord Rama played Holi or Phagwah and how handsome he looked.

In these stanzas the poet describes the joy of those who will play Phagwah with Lord Rama. The poet believes that every human in His kingdom would want to play with the Lord by spraying colours on Him and submitting flowers to Him . The poet imagines that all the girls of Ayodhya are throwing colours and dancing with the Lord. In the Ramayana, Rama is very serious always, here the poet fantasizes about Rama playing like Lord Krishna with the girls and boys and every body .

The poet further explains with different colours how Raghuveer looks different. Basically the people of Ayodhya enjoyed playing with the Lord. The poet is sending a message here to us that while playing with other souls we should think that we are playing with the Lord himself because every Atma (soul) is part of Paramatma ( Divine soul) . Then we can see the whole universe is one family .

We know that Lord Rama is Ekapatnivrath ( the man with one wife) . The poet imagines the Divine Mother Sita while She is playing with Lord Rama. The poet imagines that She feels shy. He states that She is more beautiful and running away from the Lord because He was throwing colours on her.

This poem sends the message to the universe that Lord Rama is accessible for all the people of His kingdom.

The poet encourages us to submit to Lord Rama for that is the only way to get mukti (salvation)

DEVI SHAARADA

Devi shaarada sumiri manaawo hirdai say jaaneeSumiran karo ram aroo latchman, bharat bhuaala bakhaaneeSumiran karo shrimaatu jaanki ho,

Tum ho teeni loak kee raanee hirdai say jaaneeShiva shankar bhola ko sumiro, sumiro gauri sayaaneePhir say sumiro ganesh kee moorati ho

Ati sundar pandit gyaanee, hirdai say jaaneeKari sumiran anjanee kay nandan, Meri araj yaha maniPhiri sumiro shree maatu bhagoutee ho

Devi Sharada - Explanation

Here Tulsidas ji makes Ganesh stuti and Saraswati Vandana before he starts the translation of the Ramayana. He is also advising mankind that before we start any thing we should invoke Lord Ganesha and Mother SaraswatiThe poet then tells to also do the invocation of Lord Rama, Laxman, Bharat, Satrughana and Hanuman ji and to chant the holy name of Janaki Tulsidas then praises Mata Saraswati as Durga Bavani, he says that “You are the power house of Lord Shiva, you are the wisdom of Lord Ganesha, you are the sustaining power of Maha Vishnu, you are the Adishakti, you are the Annapoorna ( who provides food to everybody ).”

Tulsidas ji says She is even responsible for his writing skills and knowledge and also asks for Her blessing and that mankind has to adopt the characteristics of this Divine Mother

In this poem to Mata Saraswati, he gives us jagatjanani status. He is also asking us to take the blessings of Mother - Durga (Parvathi), Lakshmi, Saraswati - before we start any work as he did before he started translating Ramayana.

SHIVA SHANKAR

Shiva shankar deena dayaal maha bardaaneeAng bibhoota leehay mrig chhaala, jata ganga aur gyaaneeMaathe oonkay tilak chandraa ma ho

Shiv Shankar - Explanation

Here Tulsidas Ji expresses his devotion to Lord Shiva . He says that the Lord Shiva is very merciful to the poor and gives away any thing. Lord Shiva is easy to please. Being all powerful, omnipresent, omnipotent he lives a very simple life maintains calm and is always in meditation. He bears the trishul, He is Natraj the great dancer and his vehicle is Nandi, Mata Parvathi is his wife. Lord Shiva is worshipped as linga, and the person who plays the damru and dances. He is also known as Mahadev. In these stanzas Tulsidas Ji says that he would like to take Mahadev’s blessings before he starts Ramayan translation .

This description is from Ravan in the Sri Ramcharithmanas and the RamayanaLord Shiva has abundant hair with the moon adorning His head, The cool water of the Ganga flows between the matted locks,With His radiant eye of wisdom in the middle of the forehead, And the purple neck gleaming like the sheen of a blackberry. He wears serpent bracelets and a snake belt, His entire body is smeared with Vibhuti, His forehead is adorned with a kumkum dot, His ruddy lips glow with the juice of the betel, Diamond-studded gold earrings dangle from His ears And His whole swarthy body glows with divine effulgence.

Dhani Dhani - Explanation

This poem represents the poet’s jealous version of his love and devotion. The poet feels jealous about Mata Sita. He says in his words "Oh Sita Mata, you are very fortunate to have Lord Rama as your husband, so that you can serve Lord Rama every moment, I don’t have that opportunity” “You might have done great tapasya in your previous life to get Lord Rama as your husband”

He is asking Mata Sita “What you have done? Did you bring flowers from Vrindavan garden, and did you pray every moment of your life to get Lord Rama as husband?"The poet remembers the Ramayana verses of the marriage of Sita Ji . Saint Narad brought the message to Sita that Lord Rama will be coming to marry her, saying “Open your main gate, welcome Lord Rama, give him arti”.Here the poet is telling us to give arti to Rama and Sita and take their blessings .

Tulsidas tells us to keep singing Rama’s praises.

Jaha Ram - Explanation

This poem tells us what happened in Ayodhya when Sri Rama was incarnated.

As we know that Maha Vishnu incarnated as Raja Dasarath’s son on the Ramnavami day.

All the celestial bodies, Pandits, ministers and people from all the three worlds congratulated Raja Dasarath. All the kosala vasi ( people) celebrated. All the people of Ayodhya irrespective of age, colour, race, origin - both rich and poor - came to see the Maha Vishnu's first incarnation in human form.

After seeing Lord Rama, all the people were blessed with happiness and pleasure

The poet says not only Ayodhya, but the whole universe is blessed with the charm of Lord Rama . Saints praise him ‘pumsamohana roopaya punya purushaya mangalam’ .
