Penn’s Village’s mission is to provide support, services and programs that

enable older adults to continue to lead vibrant, healthy lives, and enjoy the

activities of city life as they age while they remain in their own homes.

Organizational CultureAccording to Hasenfeld, et. al, organizational culture

includes the values, behaviors, expectations and perceptions of those involved with the organization that

affect how members of the organization behave.

Penn’s Village is a small, community-based organization dedicated to the idea of “neighbors

helping neighbors.” It is a grassroots organization, using volunteers to facilitate service delivery for

members and participating in community outreach efforts whenever possible. Services offered are

determined by clients’ needs and programs offered are often determined by the interests within the

community.

Community CultureThe community in which an organization is located has a significant impact on the organization itself,

and specifically on the organization's culture, services, and programs. As Penn’s Village is a neighborhood organization to begin with, the

community’s culture is of utmost importance.

Penn’s Village’s catchment area is Central Philadelphia, an area known for its arts, fine

dining, and its business and shopping districts. Hallmarks of the community include art and

music, academic scholarship, business, celebrations of diversity, LGBTQ inclusion, and

“liberal” politics

using grassroots volunteerism and community outreach to serve older adults in Central Philadelphia. The organizational climate is friendly,

inclusive, and relaxed.
