English /// 10-21-2008 CHICAGO -- To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Andrea Palladio, the Italian Cultural Institute of Chicago will join forces with the Istituto Ville Venete for an exhibition on Palladio, the most important figure in the history of Western architecture. Andrea Palladio was born in Padua in 1508 and his first designs date from the 1540s. For more than forty years, Palladio set down a standard for architecture that has survived the ages and inspired generations in every corner of the world. Although his work is limited to the Veneto, Palladio’s churches, palaces, and above all his signature villas represent the very ideal of classicism. Barbaro, the Church of the Redeemer, the Olympic Theater (the first freestanding covered theater), to name but a few—embody a style that is admired and imitated to this day. In the US in particular, the importance of Palladio’s civic architecture is exemplified by the very seat of national power, the White House. The exhibit will also focus on Palladio the scholar, author of four volumes on architecture published in Venice in 1570 and a standard reference for anyway interested in understanding his theories. He also published an edition of Vitruvius’s De architectura, complete with his own extraordinary illustrations. To mark this auspicious occasion, the Institute will organize a roundtable of architectural historians and museum curators from Chicago. The Institute will also make available to the public audiovisual materials that help deepen our understanding of Palladio’s work and influence.
