Introduction

This publication presents statistics for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi for culture, entertainment and social welfare; there are various areas of statistics covered: the National Library, media, heritage, entertainment activities, social welfare and Islamic Affairs.

The main sources for these statistics are Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority, Ministry of Social Affairs, National Media Council, Abu Dhabi Media Company, Municipalities of Abu Dhabi City and Al Gharbia, Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort, Al Hili Fun City and the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments.

The data is collected annually, and then it is analysed to produce statistical indicators and tables.

The publication starts with a summary of key points covering the National Library, media, heritage, entertainment activities and social welfare. A number of indicators regarding Islamic Affairs, Islamic facilities, Imams and Moazens has been included to shed light on this area.

Statistical tables give the reader more detailed data.

The Explanatory Notes section at the end of this publication provides explanations of the key terms and technical concepts used in this publication.

Key Points

1. The National Library

The National Library contains many books on a range of subjects, such as Religion, History, Politics, Economy, Arts, Pure Sciences and Children’s Books. The number of books is 409,256 in 2012, an increase of 24% compared with 2007, and 4% compared with 2011.

In 2012, books on “Religion” constitute the largest percentage of all books in the National Library at 15.1%, while books on arts accounted for the lowest percentage at 3.2%.

The percentage of books on “Applied Science” increased from 6.8% in 2007 to 9.2% in 2012.

The percentage of books on “Politics” declined from 15.8% in 2007 to 13.4% in 2012.

The National Library contains titles in Arabic and in foreign languages:

The main subject areas of Arabic and foreign books read in 2012 were “History and Geography” (13.8% of Arabic books read) and (13.5% of foreign languages read).

Arabic books read on “Arts” increased from 6.3% in 2011 to 10.7% in 2012.

The National Library also has special halls for older persons and children’s books:

The monthly average number of beneficiaries of the hall for older persons increased from 7,768 persons in 2006 to 8,230 persons in 2012, an increase of 6%.

For the children’s hall, the monthly average increased from 1,089 persons in 2006 to 2,016 persons in 2012, an increase of 85.1%.

The number of National Library visitors increased from 109,434 visitors in 2007 to 122,962 visitors in 2012, an increase of 12%. The number of borrowers rose from 18,050 in 2007 to 27,885 in 2012, an increase of 54%.

Males accounted for 72.3% of the National Library visitors and 68.9% of the borrowers in 2012.

The National Library was closed in 2010 for restoration depending on its other branches. This led to a large decrease in the number of visitors and borrowers during this period.

2. Media

Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority organises lectures covering scientific, religious, arts, economic, political, technical and intellectual aspects.

The number of lectures increased from 54 in 2011 to 62 in 2012.

Although lectures on “Arts” accounted for the largest percentage of all lectures in 2012, they declined from 27.8% in 2011 to 22.6% in 2012.

Intellectual lectures were introduced in 2012, forming 16.1% of all lectures in this year.

Scientific Lectures increased from 14.8% in 2011 to 19.4% in 2012.

The National Media Council regulates the activities of print houses, libraries, book selling outlets, book publishing and distribution outlets, advertising firms and cinemas.

The number of the new established advertising firms in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in 2012 was 76, of which 93.4% were in Abu Dhabi Region, 4% in Al Ain Region and 2.6% in Al Gharbia.

The number of book selling outlets and book publishing and distribution outlets was 45 and 38 respectively, with the largest number in Abu Dhabi Region.

Three new Cinemas were opened, all of them in Abu Dhabi Region.

The proportion of programs broadcast on “News” and “Variety” increased by 23.3 and 19.0 percentage points respectively between 2011 and 2012 on domestic production.

3. Culture and Leisure Activities

Upholding its cultural heritage, the Emirate of Abu Dhabi pays keen attention to strengthening the cultural aspirations of its people.

Many historical sites have been developed and restored with new museums and cultural events are organized frequently.

The total number of visitors to both museums and cultural events has significantly increased from 2,713,982 visitors in 2011 to 3,375,656 in 2012, an increase of 24.4%.

The number of visitors per 1,000 population to Events and Cultural sites in Abu Dhabi increased from 1,256 per 1,000 population in 2011 to 1,446 per 1,000 population in 2012.

In 2012, the number of museum visitors was 163,584, of which 52% were males and 48% were females. The “Tourists” category accounted for the largest percentage of museum visitors by 85.6%, followed by “Students” category by 12.4%, Teachers” category by 1.1% and “Official delegations” category by 0.9%.The highest visitation in 2012 was recorded in Al Ain Palace accounting for 60.3% of the total number of visitors. Al Ain National Museum occupied the second rank with 27.9%, followed Al Jahili Museum at 10.4% and Delma Museum at 1.4%.

The number of museum visitors rises at the first quarter of each, then it starts to gradually decline during the second and third quarters due to summer temperatures and holyday season. It rises again in the fourth quarter as result of the large number of tourists and school visits. The highest number of visitors was recorded in November and December, accounting for 13.7% and 13.6% of the total number of visitors respectively.

4. Social Welfare

The Ministry of Social Affairs has many Beneficiary Cases to help people with needs such as Health Disability, Limited Income and needs related to old age. It also registers Non-Government Organizations by type of activity and Nurseries Operating under the Supervision of the Ministry.

The number of the Non-Government Organisations which provide Public Services increased from 51 in 2011 to 53 in 2012, the new Organisations were specialized in Public and Cultural Service and Theatre.

The proportion of Non-Government Organisations which provide Cultural and Public Services increased from 31.4% in 2011 to 32.1% in 2012.

The proportion of Non-Government Organisations which provide Public under the “Theatre” category increased from 7.8% in 2011 to 9.4% in 2012.

The total number of members (active and associate) in Non-Government Organizations increased from 19,899 in 2009 to 26,616 in 2010.

In 2012, the highest proportion of male Beneficiary Cases was for old age cases with 35.7% of the total male cases. As for of female Beneficiary, divorce cases accounted for the largest proportion with 33.7% of the total female cases.

The total number of Beneficiary Cases increased from AED 665.5 million in 2011 to AED 806.5 million in 2012.

The number of children per nursery has decreased from 85 in 2011 to 68 in 2012. The percentage of children in nurseries who are Citizens increased from 34.0% in 2011 to 36.3% in 2012.

5. Islamic Affairs

The General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments contributes to the dissemination of religious awareness and Islamic culture, in addition to managing mosques and Islamic activities.

The number of operating mosques increased from 2,283 in 2007 to 2,667 in 2012, an increase of 17%. The number of mosques under construction increased from 54 to 75 during the same period. In 2012, the numbers male preachers, female preachers, Imams, Imams who deliver sermon (Khutba) and Moazens were 24, 14, 1,116, 997 and 596 respectively.

The relative distribution of Islamic facilities shows that the highest percentage of operating mosques and centres for memorizing The Holy Qur'an was in Al Ain Region with 40.6% and 69.2% respectively. Meanwhile, the highest percentage of mosques under constructions was in Abu Dhabi Region with 46.7%.

Explanatory Notes

Glossary This report contains certain terms specific to cultural, entertainment and social welfare statistics and necessary when analysing these statistics of Abu Dhabi Emirate. They include the following terms:

Cultural season lectures These are a lecture series provided by Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage in many subjects: scientific, religious, arts, politics and economics and technical.

Main Halls This is a large entrance room in a building provided specially for older persons and children

Nursery

This is a place for the temporary care of children in the absence of their parents.

Data sources Data are obtained from Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, Ministry of Social Affairs, National Media Council, Abu Dhabi Media Company, Municipalities of Abu Dhabi City and Al Gharbia, Al Ain Wildlife Park and Resort, and Al Hili Fun City. The data are processed and passed to Statistic Centre – Abu Dhabi for further editing and compilation.
