A Workshop for Writers

Coronado Cultural Arts Commission welcomes you and we hope to inspire your writing. The Commission continues to support the literary arts in our community with its third annual Writers Workshop on Saturday, October 15. A full day of nine sessions, eight presenters, and a keynote address by award-winning author Robert Masello. A wine and author reception follows the close of the daylong workshop at Coronado’s local gem, Bay Books located at 1029 Orange Avenue. Coronado has a rich literary history and great weather … and yes they are intertwined. Beloved author L. Frank Baum escaped the harsh winters of the Midwest in the early 1900s after writing “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” and found refuge and inspiration on our beautiful island. This beautiful coastal community has been a rich source of inspiration, and will continue to be a place where writers find a home.

Robert Masello is an award‐winning journalist, TV writer, and the bestselling author of many novels and nonfic on books. His most recent  thriller,  tled  “The  Einstein  Prophecy  (47 North)  hit  the No.  1  spot  in  the Amazon  Kindle  store.  Previous books  include “Blood  and  Ice,”  “The  Medusa  Amulet,”  and  “The  Romanov Cross,”  all  published  by  Bantam/Random House. He  also  is  the author of two popular studies of the occult ‐‐ “Fallen Angels and Spirits  of  the  Dark”  and  “Rasing  Hell:  A  concise  History  of  the Black  Arts.”  His  books  on wri ng  include  “Writer  Tells  All,”  “A Friend  in  the  Business,”  and  the

Value: Collected Stories,” and a historical novel, “Favorite Daughter, Part One.” Margulies  is  a  contributor  to  Author Magazine,  The  San  Diego Examiner,  The  Original  Writer’s  Edge  Blog  (h p://writersedgeinfo.blogspot.com),  and  The Feisty Writer and has been awarded ar st residencies at Caldera, Red Cinder Ar st Colony, the Vermont Studio Center, and Centrum. Margulies resides in San Diego.

Barbra Drizin is an educator at heart.  Her passion is teaching others  by  conveying  technical  knowledge  in  a  way  that  is easily understood.   Drizin  founded  Start  from  Scratch  Social Media  in  2010  as  a means  of  expressing  that  passion.  She weaves  her  technical  skills,  knowledge  of  social  media, intui on  for product crea on and strategy, experience as an educator,  and desire  to help people  into  Start  from  Scratch

How do online writers become known?   How do you create  buzz  from  social?    What  tools  should  I use?   What  do  publishers  look  for  in  today's  online media world?  Steve Johnson moved to Coronado with his wife in 1999. They 

were blown away by Coronado’s beauty, charm and the small‐town community that enabled locals to connect with each other in a way that just isn’t possible in bigger ci es. Shortly a er moving to Coronado, Johnson created an online newspaper that covered Coronado for locals, visitors, and most of all, was published in a  mely manner.  The first version was  launched  in 2002 and  the  response was overwhelmingly posi ve.   The Coronado  Times  (published  by  eCoronado.com)  is  a  daily  publica on  that  covers  Coronado news, events, entertainment, business and community.  The Coronado Times is read by 55,000 visitors each month and has a staff of 12.

Foust’s  first  memoir  “Nowhere  Near  Normal”  was published by Simon and Schuster in 2011 and was featured in Marie Claire magazine, NPR and MSNBC Today. She has appeared  in  Portland  Book  Review,  San  Diego  City  Beat, San  Francisco  Chronicle,  VIVA  Magazine,  and  has  been featured and interviewed on KGO News Talk San Francisco, Houston  Public  Radio,  Good  Morning  San  Diego  CW  6, WMJI  Cleveland,  The  Jim  Bohannon  Show,  NBC  Today Health  blog,  and  CBS  US  Radio  Show.  She  is  a  regular contributor  to  the  online  magazine  Role  Reboot.  Her

Captain George Galdorisi  is a  career naval aviator  who  began  his  wri ng  career  in 1978  with  an  ar cle  in  the  U.S.  Naval Ins tute Proceedings. He has wri en more than  200  ar cles  in  professional  journals, as well as 10 books, including the New York Times  best  seller,  “Tom  Clancy  Presents: Act of Valor,”  the noveliza on of  the film and “The Kissing Sailor,” which proved the iden ty  of  the  two  principals  in  Alfred 

Eisenstaedt’s  famous photograph. His  latest book project  is a  reboot of the best‐selling Tom Clancy’s Op‐Center series, with St. Mar n’s Press as publisher. Book one,  “Tom Clancy’s Op‐Center: Out of  the Ashes,”  is  a New York Times, USA Today, and Publisher’s Weekly best‐seller. Book two, “Tom Clancy’s Into the  Fire,”  released  in  2015  and was  a USA  Today  and  Publisher’s Weekly  best‐seller.  Book three,  “Scorched  Earth,”  is  releasing  in  August  of  2016.  Galdorisi  and  his  wife  became Coronado  residents  in  1983  and  his  wife  taught  in  the  Coronado  school  district  for  two decades, comple ng her teaching career at Village School. Galdorisi recently taught a course “Get Published Now,” with Coronado Adult Educa on.

An Overview of Coronado’s Crea ve Community

     Coronado  is blessed  to have a vibrant,  lively and engaging arts community and  the Cultural Arts  Commission  is  proud  to  provide  a  public  face  for  Coronado’s  body  of  crea ve industries.    Grounded  in  a  rich  cultural  heritage  stretching  back  more  than  a  century,  our enchanted  island  enjoys  and  shares  two  resident  theater  groups  –  Coronado  Playhouse Community Theater, and Lamb’s Players Theatre  (San Diego County’s  third  largest professional theater  group)  that  offer  performances  year  around;  the  Coronado  School  of  the  Arts,  a na onally  acclaimed,  award winning  school  located  on  the  campus  of  Coronado High  School; several fine art galleries including Arts & Frames by Wood Gallery, Art for Wildlife, Aus n’s, Dan McGeorge,  Emerald  C,  Ruby  P.  and  the  newest  City‐owned  gallery,  the  C3,  located  in  the Coronado Community Center featuring the work of local ar sts.      Music  is well represented by the Coronado Community Band and the Coronado Jazz Band as well  as  Musica  Vitale  (an  ensemble  of  professional  classical  singers)  and  two  organiza ons provide  a  wide  variety  of  free music  concerts  –  Coronado  Promenade  Concerts  in  the  Park (Summer Sunday evenings in Spreckels Park) and the Ferry Landing Concert Series (Saturday and Sunday a ernoons spring to late fall).      Our  Coronado  Senior  Associa on  provides  programming,  including  the  wildly  popular Armchair  Travel,  open  to  the  public  and  the  Coronado  Recrea on Department  and  Coronado Unified School District’s Adult Educa on offer a host of classes for young to old year‐around. The Coronado Historical  Associa on  represents  both  history  and  art with  its museum  exhibi ons, historic archives, and as sponsor of the popular Historic Home tours (May) and Coronado ArtWalk (September). One of our crown jewels ‐ the Coronado Public Library, offers ongoing exhibi ons, children’s  storytelling,  lectures,  films,  as well  as  hosts  discussion  groups  along with  the  very popular series of events during its Summer Fes val. Our City boasts a collec on of more than 30 pieces of art in public places around town stretching from Tidelands Park to the south end of the Silver Strand – a Public Art Walking Tour brochure is available for viewing on CoronadoARTS.com or pick one up at the Coronado City Hall or the Coronado Visitor’s Center.       Adding  to our  visual bounty  –  a drive down Orange Avenue  from  the  Ferry  Landing  to  the Hotel del Coronado offers myriad opportuni es  to view and enjoy MainStreet Ltd.’s 16 unique and special median gardens, or to tune into the buzz of downtown ac vity or view MotorCars on MainStreet  (April) or MainStreet Goes Ghostly  (October). And  last but certainly not  least –  the Coronado Island Film Fes val organiza on has announced dates for the second annual Coronado Island  Film  Fes val  slated  for November    9  ‐  12,  2017.  CIFF will  host  films  in  the  exquisitely restored Village Theater and Coronado School of the Performing Art’s Theater along with other venues.     Beyond the obvious organiza ons, Coronado also is home to a number of na onally recognized award winning authors and poets, playwrights, TV, film, and stage directors/producers, as well as actors, musicians,  composers  and film makers. We offer  a wide  and  richly  textured  variety of visual fine ar sts and cra sman rounding out what Coronado presents to its residents and shares with the world. Coronado Arts Associa on presents a variety of visual ar sts at its Art in the Park  (first and third Sundays in Spreckels Park). Find them all listed on Ar st Profile pages of the Arts Directory on CoronadoARTS.com.       The arts in Coronado are alive, vibrant and growing. We invite you to come take a closer look and let us share with you our passion for crea vity.
