Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach is proud to host the 10th Annual Pediatric Palliative Care Conference for the Southern California area. Over the last decade, palliative care has become an essential component of excellent care for children. We are now expanding into the perinatal world, working with families prior to and proximal to their baby's birth. This conference is ideal for those just beginning as well as those continuing to grow in palliative care. Let’s continue to flourish!

This year we have again assembled a group of local and nationally respected experts to address special issues related to providing palliative care. We welcome the insights of an internationally reknown leader in pediatric palliative care, Dr. Sarah Friebert who will open our conference with where we are now and what lies ahead in the future of pediatric palliative care. There will be a session devoted to Integrative Approaches to assuring comfort for our patients outside the world of pharmacology. We will have an opportunity to experience Tea for the Soul for restoritive properties for ourselves and staff. A Parent Panel will share the importance of their voice as the specialist for their child. Dr. Glenn Komatsu will address issues related to assuring peace and meaningfulness during those final hours, regardless of location. Palliative care cannot end in the hospital. Shayna Stiles, RN and Sue Egigian, RN will guide us around obstacles in providing palliative care in our communites. As our services expand into the perinatal world, are our conversations around the edge of viability succinct? Dr. Jennifer McNulty [obstetrician] and Dr. James Fritzell, Jr [neonatologist] will address these complex issues. As the work of palliative care will always center around communication, Dr. Kathleen Ruccione will close our conference sharing how our words are actually powerful drugs.

CULTIVATION: the process of trying to acquire or develop a quality or skill

Being INNOVATIVE is about looking beyond what we currently do well, indentifying the great ideas of tomorrow

and putting them into practice.

Please consider joining us to further cultivate innovations in caring for children, their

families, our staff and ourselves!
