Qui bono? Karanos, the first Macedonian king and the motives which led to the changes of the foundation myth of the Temenids in Macedon.

This paper deals with the mythical figure of Karanos who was thought to be the first Temenid king of the Macedonians at least as early as the mid4th century B.C. It is hereby argued that both the mythical narrative and the genealogy of Karanos follow two separate and distinct traditions. The first one can be traced back to the historian Theopompos of Chios (4th century B.C.). The second one was very likely formed according to a local, Macedonian source. The introduction of Karanos to the Temenid genealogy had a major impact in the assumptions concerning the royal ideology: it undermined and finally substituted the role of the former founder of the Macedonian State, Perdikkas. This has already been convincingly proposed by W. Greenwalt. Contrary to his view however, the internal narrative elements of the myth as well as the historical circumstances of the 4th century suggest that the driving force of this innovation was the only Macedonian king of the time powerful enough to cause such a drastic change, Philip II.
