Dean Robert Shay: the College of Music AdvantageChanges are afoot at CU-Boulder’s College of Music, thanks to the vision of its new leader.

Dean Robert Shay, a veteran music administrator with 15 years’ experience, began his tenure here in August 2014. “This is one of the great music schools in the country,” he says. “The excitement for this place is palpable.”

Shay is inspired by opportunities to strengthen and expand on the College of Music’s traditions of excellence. To achieve a common vision for the college among faculty, staff, students, alumni and supporters, he launched faculty-driven taskforces to delve more deeply into areas of improvement – from diversity, technology and identifying professional settings for students outside the classroom and abroad, to growing alumni engagement and positioning the college as a leader in national and international spheres of influence.

“Our greatest chance for success is to rally around a clear vision,” says Shay, who previously served as Director of the University of Missouri School of Music, and as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Longy School of Music. “Buy-in builds momentum to accomplish what I call the College of Music advantage."

“The College of Music advantage is our edge—it's what sets us apart. At our core, we offer an amazingly rich, traditional education. But we also provide many layers of innovative and hands-on experiences that aren’t necessarily happening elsewhere.”

This year, Shay anticipates progress toward realizing the College of Music advantage, with a particular emphasis on alumni engagement and student diversity. “We want to ensure pathways to success for underrepresented students and well-qualified international students,” he says. “We want this to be a place without boundaries.”

Shay earned a doctorate and a master’s degree in musicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a master’s in choral conducting from the New England Conservatory of Music and a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from Wheaton College.

Full of upbeat humor and containing some of Rossini’s greatest writing for solo voice and ensembles, the beloved story of a scullery-girl-turned-princess will appeal to audiences of all ages.

Dialogues of the Carmelites, Sung in Englishby Francis PoulencMarch 11-13, 2016Francis Poulenc’s dark, intense 1957 opera—based on the persecution of nuns at the convent at Campiegne during the French Revolution—fearlessly grapples with such timeless human emotions as fear, despair and faith. “As rich as a vintage port, the opera delivers a soft and melodic score that undulates with (dark) and complex themes … as tragically current as (they are) old.” (Metro Weekly)

The Tender Land, Sung in Englishby Aaron CoplandApril 21-24, 2016Copland was inspired to write his only full-length opera by the Depression-era photographs of Walker Evans and James Agee’s "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men." This classic tale of small-town America evokes everything from "The Grapes of Wrath" to "Our Town" and "Oklahoma!" “Copland in his Americana mode. … (A)n affecting, honest and musically elegant work … bustling rhythmic intensity and pungent chromatic bite.” (The New York Times)

The Takács QuartetThe Grammy Award-winning chamber quartet has been moving audiences and selling out concerts for three decades at CU-Boulder. Their irresistible blend of virtuosic technique and engaging personality has led The Guardian (London) to proclaim, “The Takács Quartet are matchless, their supreme artistry manifest at every level.”

Takács Quartet: “music we adore”The Grammy Award-winning Takács Quartet—in-residence at CU-Boulder and the first string quartet to be awarded the Wigmore Hall Medal—is gearing up for another characteristically virtuosic and musically gratifying season.

“We can’t wait to perform late Haydn and Shostakovich this fall,” says cellist András Fejer of Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet No. 3 in G minor, Op. 74, "The Rider," and Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 3 in F Major, Op. 73 to be performed in September—along with Antonín Dvořák’s String Quartet No.14 in A-flat Major, Op. 105, the last string quartet he composed. “Also in the first half of the season,

we’re including Brahms’ flowing and rhythmic String Quartet No. 3 in B-flat Major, Op. 67—another late work.

“This is music we adore. We love the process of returning to old favorites with renewed energy and expectations.”

Indeed, the quartet—in its 40th season—last performed Dvořák’s string quartet some 30 years ago. “It’s exhilarating to work with material that’s familiar in our hands, and reshape it into something new,” Fejer adds. “We already know the rip currents and potential pitfalls from both technical and musical perspectives. Hopefully, we’ve gained the wisdom to navigate these musical landscapes and more fully reveal the beauty that lies within.”

In addition to Brahms’ string quartet, the November program will include Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet No. 1 in C Major, Op. 74. Stay tuned for a surprise announcement from stage in November when the Takács Quartet will also present the premiere of a new work.

The chamber quartet performed some 80 concerts worldwide in the past year, coached and presented master classes in North America and Europe, and taught chamber music and individual lessons to students in Boulder.

Cinderella (La Cenerentola): “a story of transcendence”Equal parts humor, tenderness and philosophical exploration, Gioachino Rossini’s enduring classic has something for everyone.

“Right from the start, ‘Cinderella’ was a hit with audiences,” says Leigh Holman, Director of the Eklund Opera Program. “It’s hilarious, truly a comedy. But unlike the Disney version, it’s also more grounded and realistic.

“There’s no glass shoe or fairy godmother. Instead, the opera brings to life all the warmth of goodness and love.” Indeed, “Cinderella” features some of Rossini’s grandest writing for solo voice and vocal ensembles.

Sung in Italian and set at the turn of the 20th century, Holman describes this production as a “relatively traditional” rendering of the story of a scullery maid, featuring a tour de force for mezzo-soprano.

Make that three mezzo-sopranos. “We have so many great mezzos that we opted to triple cast the part of

‘Cinderella.’ Each of the three performances will spotlight a different mezzo in the title role,” explains Holman.

“What I enjoy most about this opera are its pervasive themes of character development. ‘Cinderella’ is neglected and oppressed by an abusive father, but she learns to let that go. Because of the glorious love she’s found, forgiveness grows before regret and resentment take root.

“It’s a story of transcendence.”

The SFJAZZ Collective is an all-star award-winning jazz ensemble comprising eight of the finest performers/composers at work in jazz today. Launched in 2004 by SFJAZZ, the Collective has become one of the most exciting and acclaimed groups on the jazz scene. The SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco is the Collective’s home base.

Multiple Grammy Nominee and Guggenheim and MacArthur Fellow Miguel Zenón represents a select group of musicians who have masterfully balanced and blended the often contradictory poles of innovation and tradition. Widely considered as one of the most groundbreaking and influential saxophonists of his generation, he has also developed a unique voice as a composer and as a conceptualist, concentrating his efforts on perfecting a fine mix between Latin American Folkloric Music and Jazz. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Zenón has released seven recordings as a leader including Oye!!! Live In Puerto Rico (2013) and the Grammy Nominated Alma Adentro (2011). As a sideman he has worked with jazz luminaries such as The SFJAZZ Collective, Charlie Haden, The Mingus Big Band, David Sánchez, Bobby Hutcherson, Fred Hersch, Kenny Werner and Steve Coleman.

Zenón has been featured in articles on publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, as well as gracing the cover of Downbeat Magazine. He has also toped the Rising Star Alto Sax category of the Downbeat Critic’s Poll on four different occasions. As a composer he has been commissioned by SFJAZZ, The New York State Council for the Arts, Chamber Music America, The John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, and many of his peers. Zenón has given hundreds of lectures and master classes at institutions all over the world, and is a permanent faculty member at New England Conservatory of Music. In 2011 he founded Caravana Cultural, a program which presents free Jazz concerts in rural areas of Puerto Rico.

In April 2008 Zenón received a fellowship from the prestigious John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. Later that year he was one of 25 distinguished individuals chosen to receive the coveted MacArthur Fellowship, also known as the “Genius Grant.”

Since his early exposure with Dizzy Gillespie’s United Nations Orchestra, Puerto Rican tenor saxophone virtuoso David Sánchez has become a one of the most celebrated instrumentalists in jazz, recording

nine albums as a leader and winning a Latin Grammy Award for his 2004 orchestral session, Coral. The five-time Grammy nominee has performed with a roster of greats including Charlie Haden, Eddie Palmieri, Roy Haynes, Tom Harrell and countless others. Sánchez has an impressive résumé as an educator, conducting master classes, workshops and residencies at the world’s top universities and conservatories. His latest album is Ninety Miles: Live at Cubadisco, a project recorded in Cuba and co-led by trumpeter Christian Scott and vibraphonist Stefon Harris.

For the remarkable composer, trumpeter, educator, and activist Sean Jones, the pursuit of jazz is a most serious endeavor. Deeply influenced by his immersion in Gospel music in the church as a youth, Sean had an epiphany at the age of 19 while he was a student at Youngstown State University. The awakening was his first hearing of the magnificent John Coltrane’s masterpiece A Love Supreme . After r eceiving his Master’s Degree from Rutgers University, Sean performed a six - month stint with the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Wynton Marsalis offered Sean a permanent position as lead trumpeter and J ones remained there until 2010, also participating in two recordings. During those years, Sean started touring and performing regularly with hi s own ensembles and began his longtime relationship with Mack Avenue Records, for whom he has just released his seventh recording. Education is also a major element in Sean’s ongoing activities. Shortly after joining the JAL CO , he began teaching at Duquesn e University in his adopted hometown of Pittsburgh, where he is currently Associate Professor of Jazz. In 2012 he also became Professor of Trumpet at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. In addition, master classes and clinics are a regular part of his activ ities, providing more than a dozen annually around the world. He also serves as Artistic Director of both the Pittsburgh and Cleveland Jazz Orchestras.

A five-time “Trombonist of the Year” in the DownBeat Critics Poll, Robin Eubanks is the premier jazz trombonist of his generation. In addition to leading his own groups, EB3 and Mental Images, Eubanks has performed and composed on Grammy-winning recordings with Dave Holland and Michael Brecker. He has worked with music legends Art Blakey, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones and the Rolling Stones, to name a few. The native Philadelphian is the recipient of composition grants from Chamber Music America

and ASCAP. He is a sought-after educator and is now a tenured professor of trombone at the renowned Oberlin Conservatory and Adjunct Professor at Philadelphia’s University of the Arts.

Warren Wolf is a multi-instrumentalist from Baltimore, MD. From the age of three, Warren has been trained on the vibraphone, marimba, drums, and piano. He attended the Peabody Preparatory for eight years studying classical music with former Baltimore Symphony Orchestra member Leo LePage. During his high school years at the Baltimore School for the Arts, Warren studied with current Baltimore Symphony Orchestra member John Locke. After graduating from Baltimore School for the Arts in June of 1997, Warren headed north and enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.

During his time at Berklee, Warren studied with Caribbean Jazz Vibraphonist Dave Samuels. After graduating from Berklee in May of 2001, Warren became an active musician on the Boston local scene and was hired in 2003 to become an instructor in the percussion department. Warren is currently the drummer of choice for alto saxophonist Tia Fuller, who tours with internationally renowned pop star Beyonce Knowles. Warren is also a member of the Donal Fox Group.

Wolf has several recordings as a leader and was recently signed to the Mack Avenue Records. The upcoming release of Warren Wolf, the eponymous debut album, will make it as apparent to jazz fans as it already is to jazz insiders that the 31-year-old vibraphonist is the next major voice on his instrument.

Edward Simon was born in the coastal town of Punta Cardón, Venezuela, where he grew up in a family of musicians. Settling in New York City in 1989, he played with numerous jazz masters, including Herbie Mann, Paquito D’Rivera, Bobby Hutcherson, Bobby Watson, Terence Blanchard and Don Byron. He has produced ten critically acclaimed albums as a

leader, including two The New York Times top ten jazz records of the year: Edward Simon and Simplicitas. In July 2010 Simon was named a Guggenheim Fellow, and his latest trio CD with bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade, Live in New York at Jazz Standard, has recently been released.

Originally from Auckland, New Zealand, Matt Penman studied at Boston’s Berklee College of Music before relocating to New York in 1995. In addition to releasing his own critically acclaimed CDs as a leader, Catch of the Day (2007) and The Unquiet (2002), he has recorded as a sideman on some 70 other discs and has performed with the likes of Joe Lovano, Nicholas Payton, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Gary Bartz, Kenny Werner, Nnenna Freelon, Madeleine Peyroux, Brian Blade, John Scofield and Guillermo Klein. In addition to the Collective, Penman works with the supergroup James Farm, which includes founding Collective saxophonist Joshua Redman, pianist Aaron Parks and drummer Eric Harland.

Obed Calvaire, a native of Miami and of Haitian descent is a graduate with both a master and bachelor degree of music from one of America’s premiere private music conservatories in the nation, Manhattan School of Music. He received his bachelor’s degree in 2003, completing the undergraduate degree requirements in three years and receiving his master’s in 2005. Mr. Calvaire has performed and recorded with artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Seal, Eddie Palmeri, Vanessa Williams, Mark Murphy, David Foster, Mary J. Blidge, Stefon Harris, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Music Soulchild, Nellie McKay, Yellow Jackets, Joshua Redman, Steve Turre, and Lizz Wright to name a few. He has also performed with large ensembles such as the Village Vanguard Orchestra, Metropole Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band, Roy Hargrove Big Band, and the Bob Mintzer Big Band. Currently, Obed Calvaire can be found playing with Peter Cincotti, Richard Bona, Monty Alexander, Sean Jones, Yosvany Terry, The Clayton Brothers Quintet, Mike Stern among others.

New faculty members, violinist Harumi Rhodes and cellist David Requiro—along with Erika Eckert and Paul Erhard—will then join forces to present another Boulder premiere, Max Bruch’s incredible “String Octet.”

Nov. 3 Pianist Jennifer Hayghe: The Art of Music Join new piano faculty member Jennifer Hayghe for an evening featuring music inspired by art and art inspired by music—including Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition”—performed in conjunction with a synchronized silent film of 53 original images created by visual artist Michele Tremaine. The program includes music by Bach, Granados and Liszt with artwork by Klee, Goya and Raphael.

Nov. 10 Soprano Jennifer Bird-Arvidsson and pianist Alexandra Nguyen: Cabaret Songs Grusin Music Hall will be transformed into a cabaret nightclubfor this intimate performance featuring standards of the cabaret genre interpreted through the lens of traditional classical composers such as Schoenberg and Britten. About the Eklund Opera ProgramRecognizing the importance of the arts and live vocal performance in an increasingly distracted world, long-time Boulder resident Paul Eklund made a generous gift in October 2014 to help establish a $2 million endowment at the CU-Boulder College of Music. Funding from the endowment will help support three opera productions each academic year, the CU New Opera Workshop and an opera-scenes program for new students.
