His project management experience was on tenant installation projects, but more recently, these have included civil and residential projects. He is also able to undertake programme management tasks when required. His estate agent experience included sourcing of houses and or vacant land, determining a market related price in conjunction with the client, marketing (setting up brochures, producing video’s, setting up social media which included twitter, tweetadder, facebook, linkedin and a blog) and signing of sales agreement. Career Path: Francois obtained his B Sc (Quantity Surveying )(Hon) degree from the University of Pretoria. While studying he obtained experience with a Civil Engineer (Waffleraft – 1992 to 1994) doing inspections on low cost / flats foundation as well as final inspections of houses. He also worked for a Construction Company (Milata Construction - 1995) doing a 60 house development and student centre measuring final account quantities and optimizing production. He was employed by Quantity Surveyors (Cilliers & Liebenberg – 1996 to 1997). After graduating he had a brief venture establishing a vegetable delivering service (Vegdel), but found it was not financially viable. He continued his career in quantity surveying by working on an alterations and renovations job for (Pougnet Kriel Partnership - 1998). He joined a team of project and facilities managers (Telkom Properties – 1998 to 2000) restructuring Telkom’s headquarters comprising of six buildings (91 storey’s in total) renovating office buildings by using twelve building in Pretoria as temporary accommodation to achieve this. As a team we moved 4391 people and the tenant installation comprised of 64522 m2. His next project was to work for an electrical engineering company (IST Energy – 2000 to 2001) completing the integration of 52 substations into a nation control centre for the Swaziland Electricity Board through a EMS, SCADA & RTU’s system. An opportunity arisen to work in Dublin Ireland for mechanical engineers (LLynch – 2001) doing HVAC and process pipework. Unfortunately they did not get the 10 000 m2 pipework project so he moved on. He did a structural steel final account on commercial building for Quantity Surveyors (Keogh McConnell – 2001). He went over to London in the UK where he worked for Commercial / Project managers (Procom Management – 2001 to 2002) completing the OCS & lighting installation on the Eurotunnel and compiling variation orders on Baglan Bay – CCGT Power plant in Wales. He then came back to Pretoria South Africa working for quantity surveyors in Johannesburg (Walters & Simpson – 2002 to 2004) doing a mine shaft for Impala Platinum. Travelling between Johannesburg and Pretoria became too arduous so he started working for cost engineers (CES Cost Engineering – 2004 to 2005) in Centurion Pretoria on an effluent reduction plant for Sappi. After getting married he moved to Knysna working for a construction company (Shamwari Projects – 2005 to 2006) on a high end luxury apartments project on Thesen Island. During July 2006 he did some freelancing work as (2006 to 2008) for developers, QS companies, contractors and sub-contractors in Knysna, George and Capetown. Seeing that the economy was dipping he decided to work for a commercial and residential developer (King Financial Holdings – 2008 to 2009) in Wellington but unfortunately the economy had the better of the company as well and went bankrupt. I did some freelancing work (2009 to 2012). doing work for developers, QS company, contractors and facility managers. He joined Narker & Associates team being the manager on Electrical Tenders for the CoCT. His team has managed a portfolio of R 250 million in a number of projects which includes electrical depots (Admin, Truck Ports, Mess Hall, Alterations to Existing Buildings), Fleetyard, Electrical Substations, High Voltage Line Refurbishment. Similarly, Francois has been very active in the promotion and development of the Quantity Surveying profession through discussions, promotions and helping people to get employment. Starting groups in LinkedIn “Quantity Surveyors South Africa”, “Quantity Surveyor Research”, “Construction & Building Materials – South Africa”, “FreeLance Quantity Surveyors South Africa” & “Quantity Surveyor Students”. I am glad to say that “Quantity Surveyors South Africa” group have 2 220 members as of today and that Steve Lyons the registrar of the SACQSP is also part of it.
