Application NoteCTAN #193
The Application Note is pertinent to the Quantum III / Mentor II Family
Data Replacement Instructionsusing MentorSoft
Introduction
Quantum III and Mentor II drives contain approximately 300 parameters that helpmachine manufacturers achieve the desired functionality for a certain machinerequirement. Some applications may require 20-30 or more parameters to bechanged from the drives factory default settings. Should drive replacement
become necessary, one must have a list of these parameters so that the originalfunctionality can be restored. This can be done manually although it is rathertedious.
If you do not have a list of the required parameters, the easiest way toprogram a replacement drive is to extract the parameters out of themalfunctioning unit ( assuming that it still works enough to light the display )and program the replacement drive with this data.
In order to extract and save the original drive data one can use a laptop runningthe Windows program MentorSoft (available free from our website atwww.emersonct.comfoundunder Performance Drives/Downloads/Software) anda special cable P/N CTD-PC-485-010.

You would then Save Data to Disk which then later be downloaded into thereplacement drive in a similar manner.

Failure to Establish Communication
If a message appears saying the Comm port is being used by another deviceensure some other program like RS Logix, RS Linx or Palm pilot sync programsare not active in the Start Menu tray. If they are close them or shut them down. These programs assume the serial port and prevent MentorSoft access.
Check parameters in the drive for communications are set to match MentorSoft( under File/General Setup )
Drive Parameters
#11.11 = 1 Drive address#11.12 = 0 Default baud rate 4800#11.13 = 1 Comm Mode ( ANSI )
Ensure Communication Cable end marked Drive is going to Drive not PC ! Cable is CTD-PC-485-xxx
Plug the end of the cable labeled PC into yourlaptops RS232 port and the end labeled Driveinto the D connector located in the lower rightcorner of the drive.

Saving Parameters to Disk
Once you have uploaded the data from the original drive, you should save it to disk sothat it is recorded on your PC. To do this go to PARAMETER, Save Parameter File Asand in the simply type in a name for the drive data file that makes sense but use 8characters or less and the first character cannot be a number ie Extrudr4 would be agood name. Dont worry about the extension .ctd. MentorSoft will take care of thatdetail. Then click on OK.

Whenever you exit MentorSoft it will respond with :
At this point, you would answer NO since you merely finished uploading data from thedrive.
Getting Data into Replacement Drive
This is accomplished by first running MentorSoft and under PARAMETER , OpenParameter file- open the parameter file that you previously saved or that was left on the
job site after the original Field start-up.
This data can be programmed into the replacementDrive as shown below using the CTD-PC-485-010cable to your PC. Plug the end of the cable labeledPC into your laptops RS232 port and the end labeledDrive into the D connector located in the lower rightcorner of the drive.

Parameters Different than Factory Default
Should you wish, MentorSoft can prepare a list of parameter differences from those in afactory unit that can be printed out for manual entry or future reference. If your file has
just been uploaded from the drive then you could skip to the next page. Otherwise youwould need to open the file you wish to examine.
This is accomplished by first running MentorSoft and under PARAMETER , OpenParameter File- open the parameter file that you previously saved or that was left on the
job site after the original Field start-up.
Select the data file of interest.

Which will bring up the Compare Window. Click on Defaults
This will compare this Mentor II or Quantum III setup against Mentor II factory defaultsand list differences. The list above was for a Mentor II.
