Sustainable Organizations : What are the Drivers?

Development of sustainable projects and organizations requires the management and cohesion of conflicting priorities: Profit: Corporate and shareholder value, stakeholders, industry, bankers People: Employees, Consumers, Communities, Countries (governments) Planet: Meeting global and local agreed-upon environmental standards

How to manage the pressure?

Rising Stakeholder Expectations

Growing Complexity of Sustainability Issues

Multiplication of Principles, Indicators,

The best approach from a sustainability standpoint is based on: The biggest, most balanced triangle. Highest performance in each dimension Balanced performance between all dimensions Local specificities must be considered in selecting the option

Case Study : A First Paradigm Shift!

The path that led to new investigations:• Unsatisfactory results from the Extraction program (cost vs. results)• Client’s desire to go forward with sustainability activities

The performance of five different remedial technologies were explored with GoldSET:

1. Interceptor Sumps2. Interceptor Trench3. MPE (Multi-Phase Extraction)4. Well-Based Hydraulic Barrier5. In-Situ Treatment by Oxygenation Barrier

The performance of the technologies in each aspect results from the integration of the scores for each indicator

Three options seem to perform better based on the results from the first iteration

Case Study : A First Paradigm Shift!

Page 25: GoldSETgoldset.com/portal/_downloads/GOLDSET CSVA 2010.pdfEco-efficiency. 2. ... •Stakeholders mapping. Options Description •Fatal Flaw Analysis: • Objectives ... ENV-2. Groundwater

GoldSET: A First Paradigm Shift!

Second Iteration GoldSET allows the refinement of the evaluation by deselecting options

When comparing only the three best options from the first iteration, it became obvious that the Hydraulic Barrier was underperforming when compared to the other two options

The option was ignored and testing took place with the other two

Page 26: GoldSETgoldset.com/portal/_downloads/GOLDSET CSVA 2010.pdfEco-efficiency. 2. ... •Stakeholders mapping. Options Description •Fatal Flaw Analysis: • Objectives ... ENV-2. Groundwater

A detailed analysis of the indicators showed that the differentiation came from an underperformance in seven different aspects

It’s the integration of the performance for each of the indicator that sums up the overall performance of each option

Pilot Test Findings and a Second Paradigm Shift

Data analysis from MPE testing showed erratic behaviour of the LNAPLthicknesses (well screen submerged and increase in LNAPL thick.) This observation challenged the way we interpreted diesel transport

with a water table fluctuating between the overburden and the fractured bedrock

Pilot Testing for the oxygenation of groundwater showed that biodegradation activities were occurring underneath the site

Based on the new conceptual model, the monitoring for natural attenuation was considered in the subsequent evaluation of options

Pilot Test Findings and a Second Paradigm Shift

The natural attenuation option was evaluated and considered to be the preferred remedial option, pending collection additional data

GoldSET has been used in Canada, Europe, Australia and the United States for site remediation in different sectors

Recent GoldSET applications: Point Nepean Community Trust : Redevelopment of the site for incorporation

into the Mornington Peninsula National Park (Australia) – 2006 to present CN : Contaminated-sites planning (North America) – 2007 to present Canadian Federal Government: Exploratory project for the management of

federal contaminated sites – 2009 City of Hamilton: Resurfacing of the Red Hill Valley Parkway – 2007 Metro Vancouver: Evaluating the use of recycled asphalt shingles in road
