Professional Medical Coding & Billing Professional Medical coding and Billing online certificate

What Employers Are looking For:Employers must transition to ICD-10 codes on October 1,2014, but up until that point, they’ll still be using ICD-9 codes. Most likely, they will be dual coding (coding information withboth ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes) for several months prior to theimplementation date to identify any potential problems andensure coder readiness, but payers will only reimburse claimsthat use ICD-9 codes through September 30, 2014, and onlythose using ICD-10 codes beginning October 1.

It’s extremely important that you have a good understandingof this when you’ll be looking for a job. Many trainingprograms for new coders take about a year to complete, and ifyou’re going to be done training and job hunting beforeOctober 1, 2014, employers will expect you to know ICD-9codes.

Getting certified:Credentials are important in the medical coding world.

The two most recognized, entry-level coding credentials arethe Certified Coding Associate (or CCA, offered by AHIMA) andthe Certified Professional Coder (or CPC, offered by theAmerican Academy of Professional Coders, or AAPC). It’simportant to determine which exam you’ll be taking to ensureyour training program prepares you for the right code set.

• the ccA certification exam will transition from Icd-9to Icd-10 codes on April 1, 2014.

• the cPc certification exam will transition from Icd-9to Icd-10 codes on January 1, 2015.

If you’re planning to earn your credential prior to these dates, you’ll need to know the ICD-9 codes.

Getting Educated: Icd-9 vs. Icd-10Regardless of the code set your initial education emphasizes, foundational training will be used throughout your career.

It’s important to note that any medical coding educationprogram you choose should include a significant amount oftraining in biomedical sciences (anatomy, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and medical terminology), healthcaredocumentation, and other foundational subjects. Theseconcepts are crucial to coding in both ICD-9 and ICD-10.

The new ICD-10 codes will be much more specific than theICD-9 codes. there are approximately 14,000 Icd-9diagnosis codes and over 69,000 Icd-10 diagnosiscodes. All of those new codes require you to have a betterunderstanding of the medical terminology, anatomy, etc.behind the diagnoses in order to assign the right code.

Getting Prepared: transitioning to Icd-10You will be well served by choosing an education programthat offers an ICD- 10 introduction or transition course.

If your training timeline would be best served by a programthat emphasizes the ICD-9 code set, the natural next step isensuring you’ll be prepared to transition to ICD-10 in thecoming months.

An advantage to choosing a school that trains you in both ICD-9 and ICD-10 is that you can enter the workforce ready to helpwith dual coding efforts. As many employers will be coding inboth ICD-9 and ICD-10 in the months leading up to themandated transition, this can help you stand out from otherjob applicants as you’re moving from education toemployment.

the program includes:• Comprehensive ICD-9 training – In accordance with AHIMA

recommendations, Career Step is training coders on the ICD-9 code set.

• Free ICD-10 FastTrack course – All new students will receivea free ICD-10 FastTrack course (available Summer 2013) toensure that you’re ready for the new ICD-10 certifications, dual coding efforts, and the October 1, 2014, transitiondeadline.

• AHIMA-approved curriculum – The Career Step Inpatientand Outpatient Medical Coding and Billing program is oneof the only online courses approved by AHIMA, which meansit’s been evaluated by the largest medical coding industryassociation and they’ve determined that it prepares you forcertification and employment.

• Hands-on experience – We’ve built both our ICD-9 and ICD-10 courses on employer recommendations, and you’llpractice your coding skills on genuine medical records andreports with 3M encoder software to ensure you’re ready forcertification and employment upon graduation.

• Comprehensive curriculum – Our comprehensive curriculumwill teach you both outpatient and inpatient coding, makingyou more flexible and marketable after graduation.

You may be familiar with the fact that the

healthcare industry will be transitioning

from the ICD-9-CM code set. These codes

are used by medical coders as well as a

number of other healthcare professionals

for tracking and reimbursement purposes.

Healthcare facilities must transition to

ICD-10 on October 1, 2014. This deadline

has been mandated by the Centers for

Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS),

and at that point all healthcare facilities

must begin using ICD-10 codes when they

submit claims to insurance companies and

Medicare/Medicaid. This is a monumental

undertaking for the healthcare industry,

and it naturally begs the question,“Should

I choose a training program that teaches

me ICD-9 or ICD-10 codes?”

These standards require students not only toacquire core knowledge in history and social science, but also to developthe critical thinking skills that historians and social scientists employ tostudy the past and its relationship to the present. It is possible to spend alifetime studying history and not learn about every significant historicalevent; no one can know everything. However, the State Board hopes thatduring their years of formal schooling, students will learn to distinguishthe important from the unimportant, to recognize vital connectionsbetween the present and the past, and to appreciate universal historicalthemes and dilemmas.

World HIstorY — EEnc 4231Students in grade nine or ten study major turning points that shaped themodern world, from the late eighteenth century through the present, including the cause and course of the two world wars. They trace the riseof democratic ideas and develop an understanding of the historical rootsof current world issues, especially as they pertain to internationalrelations. They extrapolate from the American experience thatdemocratic ideals are often achieved at a high price, remain vulnerable, and are not practiced everywhere in the world. Students develop anunderstanding of current world issues and relate them to their historical, geographic, political, economic, and cultural contexts. Students considermultiple accounts of events in order to understand internationalrelations from a variety of perspectives.
