Chicago State University opened its doors as a teacher training school in a leaky railroad freight car in Blue Island, Illinois, on September 2, 1867. Today, the university is a fully accredited public, urban institution located on 161 picturesque acres in a residential community on the Southside of Chicago.

In addition to our 36 undergraduate and 25 graduate degree-granting programs, the Department of Student Affairs offers a variety of ways for students to become involved in campus life and the local community through participation in activities, clubs and organizations, leadership development, and service programs. With involvement, our students will be able to gain valuable leadership skills, create and build upon campus traditions, and develop both local and global communities.

The African American Male Resource Center (AAMRC) helps young African American males become eligible for postsecondary options by making available those services that will offer academic and social support once enrolled.

The primary purpose of the Center is to collaborate with undergraduate students in becoming efficient, independent learners. Counseling Center

The Chicago State University Counseling Center professional staff is a team of experienced psychologists who provide a variety of counseling services and programs for CSU undergraduate and graduate students and the entire University Community. The counselors support and adhere to the professional, ethical, and legal standards as outlined by the American Psychological Association (APA) and various other professional organizations and represent diverse theoretical orientations and styles. In general, our role is to contribute to the overall quality of campus life for students.

Students who live on campus at Chicago State will experience life in and outside of the classroom. Through living and learning experience, CSU housing offers students the convenience of living on campus, forming life-changing relationships with students, faculty, and staff, and being exposed to a variety of activities and leadership opportunities within a few feet of the room!

Located in the heart of the campus, CSU housing is a suite-style, co-educational building that is home to 330+ undergraduate and graduate students. CSU housing offers a variety of amenities that will aid the student in their academic endeavors as well as civic engagement. Our Residence Hall comes equipped with Wi-Fi, study lounges, computer labs, laundry room, and Front Desk service.

Our staff is well-trained and excited to help students in their academic and leadership goals. TRiO

Chicago State University is one of over 1,000 higher education institutions and agencies offering Federal TRiO Programs, funded by the U.S. Department of Education. In 1965, Congress established a series of programs to aid low-income Americans enter and graduate postsecondary education under Title IV of the Higher Education Act. TRiO programs help students overcome class, social, and cultural barriers to higher education by providing a myriad of services to individuals beginning with 6th graders. At Chicago State University, in the Office of Educational Opportunity Programs/TRiO, students and community residents can find support, academic tutoring, counseling, college visits, cultural enrichment, and motivational activities for their youth. High school seniors and adults can receive career information, GED referral, assistance in the completion of college admissions applications and financial aid forms, scholarship information, and assistance to reverse defaulted student loans.

Presidential Scholars Program The Presidential Scholars Program recruits academically talented students who have demonstrated leadership ability, maintained a 3.35 cumulative grade point average, and achieved an ACT score of 20 and higher. A limited number of tuition awards are available to incoming freshman. Awards are also available to sophomores, juniors, and college transfer students. Students must be seeking their first–time bachelor’s degree and enrolled in the university as a full–time student. Applicants are required to apply for state and federal financial aid, but financial need is not a requirement for receipt of this award.

The Presidential Scholars Program provides a caring and supportive environment that encourages academic leadership and professional development. Students in the Presidential Scholars Program are committed to academic excellence and participate in a variety of enrichment opportunities.

Presidential Scholars must volunteer 30 hours of community service each semester; attend monthly academic, professional, and cultural workshops or seminars; and participate in Presidential Scholars’ meetings each semester.

Cordell Reed Student Union The Cordell Reed Student Union Building, which opened July 1995, has been heralded as a fine architectural mixture of African traditions and contemporary American culture. The building was the winner of the International Interior Design Association Magazine Award (featured on its November 1996 cover) and the 1996 Interior Architecture Award of the American Institute of Architects of Chicago. It houses the dining facilities, Movie Room, Game Room, Women’s Resource Center, International Affairs (Study Abroad Programs), Career Development, Judicial Affairs, Latino Resource Center, Student Activities, Office of the Dean of Students, Presidential Scholars, Student Government Association, African American Male Resource Center, Abilities Office, Counseling Center, and Academic Support Services. Women’s Resource Center The Women’s Resource Center is designed to advocate for increased access to childcare, counseling, education, and health care services, as well as to provide assistance in cases of domestic violence, sexual assault, or sexual harassment. The Center is a nurturing and welcoming place—a drop-in area where women regardless of ethnic background, race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, age, or socioeconomic status can meet, organize, read, and relax.

Student Government Association, or many of the other leadership positions available.

Every student is encouraged to take advantage of the multiple opportunities for leadership development, volunteerism, and student engagement. Your involvement and the friends you make along the way will only enhance your college experience.

The Dean of Students Office is here to help you navigate through some of the concerns you may have as a student. We are your campus advocate and provide assistance when it comes to managing a crisis, understanding campus policies and procedures, and connecting you with the proper university resource. This support system, which extends beyond the walls of the Dean of Students, will help you find your way through any obstacle you may face while you are a student.
