Chicago State University opened its doors as a teacher training school in a leaky railroad freight car in Blue Island, Illinois, on September 2, 1867. Today, the university is a fully accredited public, urban institution located on 161 picturesque acres in a residential community on the Southside of Chicago.

In addition to our 36 undergraduate and 25 graduate degree-granting programs, the Department of Student Affairs offers a variety of ways for students to become involved in campus life and the local community through participation in activities, clubs and organizations, leadership development, and service programs. With involvement, our students will be able to gain valuable leadership skills, create and build upon campus traditions, and develop both local and global communities.

African American Male Resource Center

The African American Male Resource Center (AAMRC) helps young African American males become eligible for postsecondary options by making available those services that will offer academic and social support once enrolled.

The primary purpose of the Center is to collaborate with undergraduate students in becoming efficient, independent learners. Program components are designed to improve the persistence rate of African American males at the University by providing an environment that emphasizes positive male development through shared experiences.

Counseling Center

The Chicago State University Counseling Center professional staff is a team of experienced psychologists who provide a variety of counseling services and programs for CSU undergraduate and graduate students and the entire University Community. The counselors support and adhere to the professional, ethical, and legal standards as outlined by the American Psychological Association (APA) and various other professional organizations and represent diverse theoretical orientations and styles. In general, our role is to contribute to the overall quality of campus life for students.

Group Counseling/ Workshops/ PresentationsOpportunities are provided for students to share common concerns, seek solutions and coping strategies, acquire helpful information and skills, and receive feedback from others. Groups focus on:

Housing & Residence Life

Students who live on campus at Chicago State will experience life in and outside of the classroom. Through living and learning experience, CSU housing offers students the convenience of living on campus, forming life-changing relationships with students, faculty, and staff, and being exposed to a variety of activities and leadership opportunities within a few feet of the room!

Located in the heart of the campus, CSU housing is a suite-style, co-educational building that is home to 330+ undergraduate and graduate students. CSU housing offers a variety of amenities that will aid the student in their academic endeavors as well as civic engagement. Our Residence Hall comes equipped with Wi-Fi, study lounges, computer labs, laundry room, and Front Desk service.

Our staff is well-trained and excited to help students in their academic and leadership goals. Students can look forward to interacting with Resident Assistants, Community Assistants, Administrative Assistant, Housing Security Guards, Front Desk Attendants, Coordinator, and Director throughout the academic year. Our staff is committed to providing the safest living environment as well as offering a variety of programs that will help students get exposed to cultural, spiritual, social, and academic pursuits.

Student Activities

There’s more to the college experience than textbooks and classrooms. Every now and then you have to set aside some time to go out and have a little fun. A huge part of a well-rounded college experience is the opportunity to explore new interests and discover who you are.

CSU boasts more than 50 on-campus clubs and organizations, along with a powerful student government, socially active fraternities and sororities, intramural sports, NCAA Division I Athletics Program, Fitness Center, and more.

Research shows that college students who get involved on campus have higher retention rates and report having a more satisfying college experience. CSU’s Office of Student Activities is committed to fostering a campus community where everyone is engaged and we invite our students to “Get Involved.”

Chicago State University is one of over 1,000 higher education institutions and agencies offering Federal TRiO Programs, funded by the U.S. Department of Education. In 1965, Congress established a series of programs to aid low-income Americans enter and graduate postsecondary education under Title IV of the Higher Education Act. TRiO programs help students overcome class, social, and cultural barriers to higher education by providing a myriad of services to individuals beginning with 6th graders. At Chicago State University, in the Office of Educational Opportunity Programs/TRiO, students and community residents can find support, academic tutoring, counseling, college visits, cultural enrichment, and motivational activities for their youth. High school seniors and adults can receive career information, GED referral, assistance in the completion of college admissions applications and financial aid forms, scholarship information, and assistance to reverse defaulted student loans.

Presidential Scholars Program The Presidential Scholars Program recruits academically talented students who have demonstrated leadership ability, maintained a 3.35 cumulative grade point average, and achieved an ACT score of 20 and higher. A limited number of tuition awards are available to incoming freshman. Awards are also available to sophomores, juniors, and college transfer students. Students must be seeking their first–time bachelor’s degree and enrolled in the university as a full–time student. Applicants are required to apply for state and federal financial aid, but financial need is not a requirement for receipt of this award.

The Presidential Scholars Program provides a caring and supportive environment that encourages academic leadership and professional development. Students in the Presidential Scholars Program are committed to academic excellence and participate in a variety of enrichment opportunities.

Presidential Scholars must volunteer 30 hours of community service each semester; attend monthly academic, professional, and cultural workshops or seminars; and participate in Presidential Scholars’ meetings each semester.

Cordell Reed Student Union The Cordell Reed Student Union Building, which opened July 1995, has been heralded as a fine architectural mixture of African traditions and contemporary American culture. The building was the winner of the International Interior Design Association Magazine Award (featured on its November 1996 cover) and the 1996 Interior Architecture Award of the American Institute of Architects of Chicago. It houses the dining facilities, Movie Room, Game Room, Women’s Resource Center, International Affairs (Study Abroad Programs), Career Development, Judicial Affairs, Latino Resource Center, Student Activities, Office of the Dean of Students, Presidential Scholars, Student Government Association, African American Male Resource Center, Abilities Office, Counseling Center, and Academic Support Services. The building is available to the community to host events such as weddings, proms, and meetings.

Women’s Resource Center The Women’s Resource Center is designed to advocate for increased access to childcare, counseling, education, and health care services, as well as to provide assistance in cases of domestic violence, sexual assault, or sexual harassment. The Center is a nurturing and welcoming place—a drop-in area where women regardless of ethnic background, race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, age, or socioeconomic status can meet, organize, read, and relax.

The Dean of Students Office fosters the development of leadership, civility, accountability, and responsibility in the Chicago State University student; builds community through service and involvement; and serves as an advocate for all students. We strive to help all students achieve their academic and personal goals and enhance the CSU student experience.

Remember that your college years will be some of the most memorable of your life. The opportunities available to you at Chicago State University inside and outside the classroom are absolutely incredible. While you are a student at CSU, we encourage you to get involved in our campus and stay connected.

Consider joining your Residence Hall Association, an intramural sports team, a fraternity or sorority, or any of the academic, social, and service organizations offered. Attend a home game in the Jones Convocation Center; enjoy the fitness center in the Jacoby Dickens Center. Take in a concert during Jazz in the Grazz or relax in the Cordell Reed Student Union while enjoying Movie Mondays, Zumba Classes, Social Lounge, and more. Earn money as an on-campus student employee or raise money to help your favorite charity. Gain leadership experience by becoming a Resident Assistant, a Student Ambassador, a member of the

Student Government Association, or many of the other leadership positions available.

Every student is encouraged to take advantage of the multiple opportunities for leadership development, volunteerism, and student engagement. Your involvement and the friends you make along the way will only enhance your college experience.

The Dean of Students Office is here to help you navigate through some of the concerns you may have as a student. We are your campus advocate and provide assistance when it comes to managing a crisis, understanding campus policies and procedures, and connecting you with the proper university resource. This support system, which extends beyond the walls of the Dean of Students, will help you find your way through any obstacle you may face while you are a student.

I encourage all students to explore the Dean of Students website as well as all the exceptional programs and services the Department of Student Affairs has to offer. Even more, I encourage you to stop by the Dean of Students Office and get to know the staff members who are dedicated to your education and overall development as a student and future alum of this great institution!
