reggio emilia LearningSome of our preschool faculty have trained in the Reggio Emilia style of teaching and incorporate this into their curriculum. In the Reggio Emilia style the music and art studio are setforinquiry-basedlearningandtheteacher’srole is to be a collaborator with the child, not just an instructor. The child is viewed as an active constructor of knowledge. Rather than being seen as the target of instruction, the child has an active role as an apprentice. The Reggio Emilia approach to teaching young children puts the natural development of children as well as the close relationships that they share with their environment at the center of its philosophy. Children learn through the experience of touching, moving, listening, seeing and hearing.

• In consideration of all enrollees, no unregistered siblings over the age of 6 months are permitted to attend.

• diSCOUNT: 2 or more from the same family = 5% discount OR more than one class or camp = 5% discount. Discount conditional upon registering at one time and cannot be combined with any other discount or financial aid.

CsMa Merit scholarship ProgramCSMA’s Merit Scholarship program reflects the pinnacle of talented students in the Music School. Students range in age from elementary school through high school and have been identified as showing a high level of talent, commitment and achievement in their CSMA studies, ready to develop the additional skills necessary to become high level performers. The program is open to instrumentalists and vocalists.

Merit Scholarship students and their families are regarded as the ambassadors of the CSMA Music School and are role models for all of our students and their families. Stage presence, rehearsal techniques and performance portfolio skills are built through ensemble coaching sessions and special workshops with CSMA Music School faculty. Merit Scholarship students perform throughout the academic year at concerts and events, both at CSMA and off-site. Students have performed at corporate functions, nursing homes, special events, hospitals and private homes as featured soloists and in student ensembles.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship, students must be nominated by a faculty member and are only eligible for nomination after one year of continuous CSMA private lessons. Each year, CSMA awards approximately 50 Merit Scholarships, following competitive auditions before a panel of judges which are held every spring semester.

Several Merit scholars have gone on to become professional musicians, some with international acclaim. Former student Taylor Eigsti, for instance, is one of the country’s leading jazz luminaries, performs internationally and has released multiple albums. The program has been an excellent springboard for classical music education, with students accepted at some of the nation’s most prestigious music schools, including The Julliard School and Berklee College of Music.

Thank you to our institutional funders for making Arts4All a reality!

n behalf of the faculty, staff and Board of Directors, welcome to the Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA)! For 45 years, CSMA has advocated for and provided excellent music

andartinstructionforpeopleofallagesandabilities.CSMA’sprivatemusiclessons, musicandarts classes and camps, and programs in our local schools provide the opportunity for anyone to develop and nurture their creativity and participate in the universal languages of music and art.

Browse this catalog and find programs at Finn Center for preschoolers and their parents, private music lessons, classes in drawing from live models, fabric design, digital arts and music, and an audition-free adult chorus.

Our school-based programs bring high quality, skills-based visual arts and music education to over 10,000 K-8 children in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Students engage in opportunities to explore, experiment, create and innovate that the arts allow. CSMA helps students receive a complete education that prepares them for college, career and civic participation.

CSMA also joins with community partners to nourish the spark and excitement of the arts. Through collaborations with Stanford live and the African Film Festival that bring high quality performances to Tateuchi Hall to classes for clients of Abilities United, there is something for everyone to enjoy and learn at CSMA.

None of our success could be realized without the generous support of the City of Mountain View, our foundation and corporate funders and individuals like you who believe in arts for all. We are forever grateful for your continued support and the difference you make in the lives of our aspiring artists and musicians.
