Dear friends of CSF,

Over the course of the last year CSF lost three tremendousfriends in Carolyn Lynch, Tom Stemberg and SusanBarber Coppedge. Their commitment to our work willbe missed, but their memory will remain alive in everyfuture that is made brighter due to their leadership and generosity.

The scholar quoted above is a true example of whatthese great champions of our work promoted and whatwe aim to achieve at the Catholic Schools Foundation. Our goal is simple, to build minds and change lives.

Achieving our mission requires strong, high-qualityschools, excellent teachers and administrators, and generous donors to provide opportunities for theseamazing young people. This work is truly a team effort, and we are grateful for the partnerships and relationshipsthat make the fulfillment of our mission possible.

Enclosed in our 2015 Annual Report, you will readabout many types of partnerships that are necessary tocontinue the vital work of Catholic education. You willsee the names of generous donors, volunteers, and community and corporate partners that help changelives through their individual and collective efforts.

Please take a moment to read these stories and, moreimportantly, to see what these partnerships make possible: building the minds and changing the lives of at-risk young people.

We take your trust and support most seriously andstrive each and every day to achieve our mission in themost efficient manner possible. The wise use of the resources entrusted to us is critical to ensuring the moststudents are helped. Our focus is always on directly impacting the lives of students and families; our studentsand supporters deserve nothing less than this commitment. In FY2015, 91% of every dollar raised went directly tosupport scholarships and other program activity.

Thank you for your continued support of our work. If you have any questions about the information presented, please contact us at anytime. Without yoursupport, there is no Catholic Schools Foundation orInner-City Scholarship Fund, so we welcome yourthoughts and ideas.

Sincerely,

William S. Mosakowski President, CSF Board of Trustees

$500,000 FROM GERSTNER FAMILY FOUNDATION STRENGTHENS THE ELEMENTARY TO HIGH SCHOOL CONTINUUM

The Gerstner Family Foundation, founded by LouisGerstner, Jr., former Chairman of the Board and ChiefExecutive Officer of IBM, is partnering with theCatholic Schools Foundation to implement a newmerit-based scholarship program for low-income students entering Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Boston. The goal of the program is tostrengthen the transition between Catholic elementaryand high schools for high achieving students. The grant, amounting to $500,000, is available to selectedgraduating eighth graders from Catholic elementaryschools. Scholarships will be guaranteed for four years if students continue to meet all requirements. The first

five Gerstner scholars were named in the spring of 2015and entered high school in the fall of 2015.

Recipients are nominated by their elementary schoolprincipals based on academic achievement, demonstratedleadership potential and dedication to community involvement. They must also qualify for need-based financial aid. A committee reviews all applications andfinalist nominees participate in a personal interview.Scholarships for the first two classes of Gerstner Scholars will receive awards of $6,000. The second andthird classes of Gerstner Scholars will receive awards of $6,500.

Julian Delgado, a 9th grader at St. John’s PreparatorySchool and former student at Bellesini Academy, standsout among his peers. He starred in CSF’s 2014 AnnualDinner Gala video, saying, “My main goal is to go tohigh school, finish high school, go to college, finish college, and eventually become an architect.” Julian is described as brilliant, independent, and a person of integrity.

Julian was one of the top students at Bellesini Academyand displayed a high work ethic and determination tobe successful in all that he did. He served as a StudentAmbassador and tour guide for the school, while alsospeaking at various Bellesini events. In addition tomusic, theater, and sports, Julian led academic teamssuch as the Geography Bee Team, Academic Bowl, and MABACH team. He took advantage of every opportunity afforded to him at Bellesini, but his realpassion was community service. He volunteered atMSPCA Animal Shelter, served dinner weekly at MaryImmaculate Nursing Home, volunteered at COr UnumSoup Kitchen, and helped with many one-day eventsincluding Habitat for Humanity and Lazarus House.

In his application, Julian said that he is inspired by hisbrothers, one of whom has muscular dystrophy and isunable to walk. When asked, “Where would you go if

you go anywhere in the world after graduation withmoney being no object?”, Julian said he would take hisbrother to space and explained, “For my brother, exploring space would mean that he is capable of anything. It would mean that his dystrophy doesn’tlimit him and that he should never back down from achallenge...Traveling to space with Matthew wouldn’tonly benefit us, but also help the world and society toview their habitat and ‘weaknesses’ differently.”

Having been named a class of 2019 Gerstner Scholar,Julian began his freshman year at St. John PreparatorySchool in August where we know he will do greatthings. Congratulations, Julian, and thank you to theGerstner Family Foundation for helping students receive a high-quality secondary education at Catholichigh schools in the Archdiocese of Boston.

HOMELESS YOUTH FIND THEIR PLACE IN CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

CSF is committed to finding ways to address the needs of underserved children and families as CatholicSchools historically have done in this Archdiocese. In addition to successful Hispanic Recruitment and our New Immigrant Programs, CSF recently partneredwith Horizons for Homeless Children to give homeless families a point of stability through a tumultuous timein their lives. This initial effort was made possiblethrough the support of some key individual donors as well as proceeds from the annual JP Morgan ChaseCorporate Challenge, a 5K run held every June inBoston, from which the proceeds were granted to CSF to support this partnership with Horizons forHomeless Children.

Early childhood trauma, such as homelessness and extreme poverty, can weaken the developing brain, affecting a child for a lifetime. Through this partnership,we aim to help our most vulnerable — homeless children — receive access to a quality, values-based education at Catholic schools. Beneficiaries are youngpeople who graduate from the Horizon’s early education

centers, and this program offers a safe and consistentenvironment to families facing hardship and instability.

Scholarships are guaranteed for students every year frompre-K through eighth grade. This provides families security and the ability to build strong relationshipswith their school community. Ties with the school arefurther strengthened as families work closely with staff

from Horizons for Homeless Children, CatholicSchools Foundation and the local schools. It is a truepartnership to serve these students.

Through this partnership, we aim

to help our most vulnerable —

homeless children — receive

access to a quality, values-based

education at Catholic schools.

In a word, if we want security, let us give security; if we want life, let us give life;if we want opportunities, let us provide opportunities.

A $50,000 GRANT FROM THE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS FOUNDATION STRENGTHENS SCHOOLS IN LOWELL

Funding from our committed supporters has allowedCSF to unite eight Catholic schools in Lowell through a pilot program called the Catholic Schools Lowell Collaborative.

In the 2014-2015 school year, the Collaborative implemented several initiatives designed to strengthenthe continuum of Catholic education in Lowell. Theactivities also supported the needs of individual schoolsthrough a variety of training and capacity-building retreats and workshops. The successfully implementedprojects included a joint seventh grade leadership retreatfor selected students from each Catholic elementary

school, retreats for all members of each school’s eighthgrade class, professional development for teachers, andacademic tutoring.

The pilot phase of the Collaborative has had proven results in building community and adding needed resources across all eight schools. Fostering this cultureof collaboration and dialogue ensures that all studentsfind success academically, emotionally, and spiritually. The Collaborative is planning to expand upon these initial accomplishments, creating a vibrant presence and sustainable continuum of high-quality Catholic education that is accessible to families in Lowell.

STATE STREET CORPORATION PROMOTES YOUNG PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT WITH THE ICSF

State Street Corporation has been a strong corporatepartner with the Inner-City Scholarship Fund for 25years. Jay Hooley, Chairman and CEO of State Street, chaired the 2014 annual dinner gala and Mike Rogers,President and COO of State Street, has been a memberof our Board of Trustees since 2012. Mike also chairsour Allocations Committee, which is responsible forgoverning the distribution of all CSF program grantsand scholarships. Beyond the leadership and financialsupport they provide, State Street also plays a vital role in engaging young professionals with the work of the ICSF.

Both Mike and Jay have strongly encouraged youngprofessionals at State Street to be involved with theICSF through events and volunteer opportunities. In2015, six of the 30 young leader dinner committeemembers were State Street employees, including one of the Co-Chairs, Kristina Valente, who was also namedCSF’s Volunteer of the Year. Amy Iseppi of State Street currently chairs the Young Leaders Council. Additionally, State Street hosted three events in 2015 to benefit the students of the ICSF and to build awareness for the organization.

Corporate Trivia NightOn March 19, Mike Rogers and State Street sponsoredand hosted a Corporate Trivia Night that was attendedby over 200 young professionals from 30 different companies. Also in attendance were many of CSF’s

Executive supporters who agreed to lead trivia teamsfrom their respective companies. They included: MikeRogers of State Street, Rick Henken of Schochet Companies, Barry Nearhos of Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Joe Petrowski of Gulf Oil LP, and John Running of Hill Holliday. The event raised more than$6,000 for student scholarships and helped build awareness for the ICSF among young professionals in Boston.

Corporate Volunteer Day On March 27, State Street hosted a Corporate VolunteerDay, inviting young professionals to volunteer at one ofthree Catholic Schools in Boston: East Boston CentralCatholic, Saint John’s School, and Cathedral HighSchool. More than 40 young professionals attended and read to younger students, worked on art projects, and participated in a career panel for high school seniors. The morning concluded with a breakfast atState Street’s 1 Lincoln Street headquarters.

ICSF Night at Fenway ParkOn May 5, State Street hosted 20 students, parents andteachers from East Boston Central Catholic School atFenway Park for a behind the scenes tour that includedbatting practice, dinner at the park, and tickets to watchthe game. It was a very special opportunity for studentsof the ICSF to see Red Sox players up close and to experience a game at Fenway Park.

DEAR FRIENDS,

May 2015 marked twenty-five years since my departureas manager of the Magellan Fund, and October 2015 ismy 25th anniversary of helping raise money for theInner-City Scholarship Fund (ICSF). It is amazing tothink of all of the changes that have occurred in thosemany years. One constant during this time has been thedifference the ICSF makes in the lives of financially disadvantaged young people throughout greater Bostonand my commitment to this work. I believe the ICSF is the best cause for providing young people a strong education along with the self-confidence and disciplineto succeed in life. The alternative for these at-risk children is a poor one.

My commitment is still so strong because your generosity makes a real difference. Despite its low tuition ($4,400 on average for elementary school), despite being open to all students regardless of race orreligion (72% of students are non-white and 29% non-Catholic), and despite our superior results, our outstanding schools are a major financial reach for mostfamilies! This is due to the fact that 55% of familiesserved are living below the poverty level. A baby born in America today is less likely than their parents to graduate from high school; our effort helps ensure students will graduate with a good education and havemore opportunity to be productive and happy membersof society. Over the last three decades, jobs for highschool dropouts have declined dramatically, and theiroutlook is grim.

In addition, one of the most common characteristics ofthe over 2,000,000 people in prison in America today isilliteracy. The ICSF is creating well-educated taxpayersat no cost to the taxpayer and, most importantly, givingyoung people a great chance to succeed. Thanks to yourhelp, these students will become educated, productivemembers of our society.

As you review the list of donors, please know that I am grateful to each and every donor who made a gift.Without your generosity, it would be impossible tochange the lives of the young people who directly benefit from your support. Thank you for helping tobuild minds and change lives.

With gratitude for the difference you make, I am

Sincerely yours,

Peter S. LynchPresident Emeritus/ICSF Appeal Chair

On Wednesday, April 15, 2015, the Inner-City Scholarship Fund (ICSF) hosted the 25th Annual Dinner Celebration. Event Chair Karen Kaplan, Chairman and CEO of Hill Holliday, announced that the event raised $3.1 million for the students of the ICSF.

Jack Connors was honored with the Carolyn & PeterLynch Award in recognition of his leadership, support, and commitment to the students of the Inner-CityScholarship Fund (ICSF). A dedicated supporter fromthe early years, few have done more for Catholic education in the Boston area than Jack, and his effortshave truly helped to build minds and change lives.

Heather Unruh, co-anchor of WCVB award-winningNewsCenter 5 newscasts and Master of Ceremonies forthe event, recognized Rudy Favard, a former ICSFScholarship recipient, dinner speaker, graduate ofMalden Catholic, and recent graduate of Sacred HeartUniversity in Connecticut. Rudy told the audience thatin the fall he would begin a master’s program in publicrelations and communications at West Virginia StateUniversity, adding, “This education that I have been

blessed to receive has put me on a path to be successfulfor the rest of my life. Without people like you whogive so generously this would not be possible.”

Rudy introduced the featured student speaker, NithaelleSimoly, a CSF Scholar and senior at Cardinal SpellmanHigh School in Brockton. Nithaelle told her inspiringstory of immigrating to Boston from Haiti when shewas seven years old, not speaking a word of English. She told the audience how she has overcome incredibleobstacles in her life and credits her Catholic educationfor giving her the strength and support she needed during difficult times. She graduated with honors inJune and was the first in her family to pursue a highereducation this fall at Stonehill College.

It was a memorable evening, highlighting the incredibleimpact our donors have on changing the lives of thousands of students in the greater Boston community. In Nithaelle’s own words, "I want you to know thateverything you donate doesn't just go to me finishinghigh school. It goes to me becoming a doctor and becoming a mother.”

Because of my parents’ undying commitment, my outstanding Catholic education and your generous support, my future is bright. I stand before you tonight confident, humbled and eternally grateful.
