WHO DO YOU THINK WILL BE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL PERSON 15 YEARS LATER?

STUDENTS SAY…

In my class 15 years later, I think the most successful person may be Pei Dong, because he works hard and he likes studying. He also likes talking with other people and the most important is when he studies, he is very concentrated.

As for the person who might be the most educated, I think that would be Feng Ke. This is because he is very smart, and he likes studying too. When he studies, he tends to analyse things a lot. In addition, he puts a lot of effort in his studies.

Finally, the person who might be the best father in my class would be Afif. He has got patience, he is a good boy even if he is sometimes annoying. However, he is humorous and usually makes us laugh. So I think the best father must be him in 15 years.

Taken (2008)

Cast: Liam Neeson, Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen

Director: Pierre Morel

Synopsis: A tired CIA agent travels across Europe and relies on his old skills to save his daughter, who has been kidnapped while on a trip to Paris

Review:

'Taken' is a movie which set in France. The words 'France' and ‘recommended’ attracted my eyes, but at first I was really doubtful. It was my first time seeing a movie from this strange country.

First off, this is a great and fun action movie from beginning to end. The fighting style makes the story interesting and excellent to watch throughout the whole film.

In this film, Liam Neeson (Bryan Mills) is a retired CIA agent. His daughter Maggie Grace (Kim) manages to convince her father to allow her to travel to Paris with her friend, Amanda. When the girls arrive in Paris, they share a cab with a man named Peter, and Amanda tells him that they are alone in Paris. Using this information, an Albanian gang of human traffickers kidnaps the girls. Kim barely has time to call her father and slip him information. Her father gets to speak briefly to one of the kidnappers, who wishes him "good luck," so Bryan Mills travels across Europe and uses his old skills to save his daughter.

After the film, I kept thinking about how to use limited clues to find the

answer or something I wanted to get. It influenced my mind in the way I thought about problems, and I started to think about things in many angles like the hero of this film. Hence, I highly recommend it to everybody.

I feel that 'Taken' is the one of near perfect films, which is exciting and creative - and well-worth a few hours of your time.

Singapore Dreaming

Cast: Yeo Yann Yann, Richard Low

Directors: Yen Yen Woo, Colin Goh

Synopsis: Singapore Dreaming is a 2006 film set in Singapore. The film follows the Lin family, a typical Singaporean working-class family, through their aspirations for a better life and the harsh reality that makes it difficult for them to fulfill these aspirations.

Review: Singapore Dreaming is one of the best shows that I have ever seen. It talks about a local family, how hard it is to live in this reality and the experience of being happy, sad, complacent and through loss. It is about the most ordinary family expecting the most extraordinary dreams. I recommend this show. It should be watched by all the people who live in Singapore, because you will learn more about this country after watching the show.

This show presents the reality of life in Singapore. This family includes the

father (Richard Low), who likes buying lottery. He dreams of becoming a rich person through winning the lottery. The mother is a traditional housewife. The son who is the only person who has a university education in this family but he did not graduate. In fact, he is an unsuccessful and vain person. The daughter (Yeo Yann Yann) always wants to change their lives but her husband doesn’t earn enough money for their simple lives and her boss also treats her really badly. She feels quite stressed. However they are happy living together.

One day, the father wins 2 million dollars and then everything changes. Unfortunately, the father dies a few days after he has won the lottery. After that, the son and the daughter argue because of the 2 million dollars. Each of them wants to get more money to change their lives……..The ending is quite sad, it is not a happy family anymore. In this film as you can see, if they had higher education, their lives wouldn’t be so hard.

It describes that even in this successful and developed country, the local families are still put through a lot of struggles in this society. But the busy lives and stress, the pursuit of higher education, the chase for better house and car s, the obv ious stratification between professionals and non professionals, have already become an important part of Singaporean’s lives. This makes us wonder whether local people can achieve happiness when the country develops.

Step Up 2: The Streets (2008)

Cast: Robert Hoffman, Briana Evigan, Adama G. Sevani, Will Kemp and Cassie Ventura

Director: Jon M. Chu

Synopsis: Romantic sparks occur between two dance students from dif ferent backgrounds at the Maryland School of the Arts.

Review:

Step Up 2 is quite old already, but I thought all of the Step Up series was really good.

You should watch this movie. Because this movie has some motivation about how to live and the message of this movie is to never give up in anything you do. I think almost all of the Step Up film series is about a normal street dancer who eventually becomes a famous dancer. So that means this story goes from zero to hero.

This story tells of a girl, Andie, in a street dance group. Andie really likes to dance, and when her mother was alive she always encouraged her to dance. But in the middle Andie’s group fires her, so Andie forms a new street dance group. At first, Andie’s group loses to her previous dance team, but at the end of the story, Andie’s team gets much better and wins the competition.

After I watched this movie, I felt like I was born again. This movie really teaches me

how to live. The important word from this movie that I always remember is, “Life is too short to be anybody else.” You should watch this movie in your free time!

SHERLOCK HOLMES

Cast: Robert John Downey Jr, Jude Law

Director: Guy Ritchie.

Synopsis: Sherlock Holmes begins investigating a case, and finds that it is much bigger than it appears to be.

Review: London detective Sherlock Holmes and his partner and flatmate Dr. John Watson goes to catch Lord Blackwood, who has killed five young women. They stop the murder before Inspector Lestrade and the police arrive to arrest Blackwood.

Then Blackwood is sentenced to death and goes to see Holmes, where he warns of three more unstoppable deaths that will cause great changes to the world. Blackwood is subsequently hanged and pronounced dead by Watson. Three days later, Holmes is visited by Irene Adler, a professional thief and his former adversary, who asks him to find a missing man named Luke Reordan. Holmes follows her as she meets with her secret employer, hidden in

the shadows of a carriage. The concealed man states that Reordan is the key to Blackwood's plans.

Then, Holmes uses his knowledge and courage to look for the facts. Finally, he manages to foil Blackwood’s plan.

Blackwood realizes his plan has failed, and he escapes. Holmes confronts Adler on top of the incomplete Tower Bridge, but is interrupted by Blackwood. As Holmes and Blackwood fight, Holmes tricks him into becoming entangled in the ropes and chains hanging over the Thames. After a climatic fight, Blackwood, with a noose of chains around his neck, falls from the bridge and is hung.

In the end, Holmes looks forward to a new case and new adversary.

Summary: I think the movie is great. Sherlock Holmes is my idol. I think this character is successful, because when people chat about spies and mystery novels, they will always think of Sherlock Holmes. I recommend that you guys watch this movie, because there are many things about chemistry and physics that we can learn.

WHAT DO STUDENTS SAY ABOUT CSE?

Wang Jing Ling: “The best thing in CSE2 class has been the community. I like the atmosphere of this class. Teachers have always made games to help us learn about English and also the games can make my classmates become closer as friends.”

Zhao Liang Heng: “So far, I have learned many things in school. I have been laughing more. Since class began, I have learned to never give up. There is no doubt that I learned persistence. My teachers always encouraged me when I want to give up.

At first, I could only say a few words and a f e w s e n t e n c e s . T h a n k s t o t h e i r encouragement, I have learned many things. After attending CSE, I can now speak many more words. I know now that if I keep going, I can do it.”

Liu Pei Dong: “I have been learning lots of things in CSE. Before coming here, I had a difficult time understanding English. Before coming here, I didn't know that we could study while playing. Finally, I have been making lots of friends during my studies in CSE. In CSE, the things that are usually boring become fun. I hated studying in boring classes before, but here, teachers haven't been teaching boring lessons. I never talked with the teachers before. Now, that has changed.

In this school, our lives are no longer boring. We have been working together, eating together, laughing together... Whatever it is, I like CSE. I have never done learning this way in other schools.”

Yuhang Chen: “I've been improving my English vocabulary and grammar. I think our teachers are great, because I found I already improved a lot in three weeks. I've been learning how to pronounce the word correctly and clearly. I have also been learning how to relax myself, I think those are useful for me.

The best thing is that we have nice teachers. They always make the class become fun and relaxed. We don't feel bored, so we can learn more things. Our teachers always make a nice atmosphere for us.

I think the best moment was when we were playing games and having fun together. I think that is good for our friendship.”

Hoang: Today is my first day studying in City College. I have been studying quite a lot of things about English. I have been studying about writing, spelling and editing like correcting mistakes or completing the quizzes. We have also matched the timelines on the paper to learn grammar. We've been doing many different things to practice grammar. :)

Zheng Haowen: “The best thing in CSE is the class is a lot of fun. We can learn English with teamwork and, during the class, the students can only use English to speak to each other. We can learn English with no stress in CSE class, and I think the students and the teachers in CSE class are friends. The class has not so much homework, and students do not feel tired in class.”

Feng Ke: I have been learning teamwork and a lot of vocabulary a n d g r a m m a r, a n d c o r r e c t pronunciation. I have also been lear ning what i s the way to communicate with people in the

school. The teacher will teach you standard English. Sometimes, the teacher will let us play some games and from the games we will learn a l o t , l i k e v o c a b u l a r y a n d communication. The teacher are all very kind to us. I have many best moments like when we played the balloon vocabulary game, name tag race, and mafia.

Chen Zhi Qiu: The best thing in CSE? I have only joined CSE for one month but I feel that we are like a family.

The 28th Jan was the second day which I was in CSE. I overslept and tried to get on a bus as fast as I could. When I came in, it felt strange because of my classmates' facial expressions. I kept asking 'have I done something wrong?' 'why are they so serious about it?'

Suddenly, 'Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to Zhi Qiu,' they sang. I just realized that day was my birthday and I felt happy and relaxed

from their songs. That was a surprise! I felt warm and it was the first best moment in CSE. Yes, I was excited as well as had no words to say beside thank you!

After that, I sat on my seat. Miss Meiling came closer and closer, I thought there was another 'best moment.' 'Don't be late next time,' she told me and smiled. This 'best moment' was a bit different from mine, but I loved it!
