SUMMER 2012/13 . NEWS . CanbERRa SoUthERn CRoSS ClUbSUMMER 2012 . NEWS . CanbERRa SoUthERn CRoSS ClUb

Each year, the Canberra Southern Cross Club is pleased to sponsor Carols by Candlelight held at Stage 88 in Commonwealth Park and provide assistance to the Woden Valley Youth Choir. Under the artistic direction of Alpha Gregory, the choir leads the singing of carols under the stars backed by the talented Canberra City Band.

It’s a wonderful relaxed event as families gather together on their picnic rugs and chairs to celebrate the joys of Christmas with the highlight of the event for the children being a visit by Santa.

The event also raises funds for a different local charity each year. This year, funds collected on the night by the Lions Club volunteers will be donated to Snowy Hydro Southcare and will be presented to them by Canberra Southern Cross Club Director, Chris Behrens.

The sound and lighting for the event, staging, sandwiches and refreshments for volunteers and musicians is also provided through the Club’s assistance and its continued commitment to helping the community. A special mention should be made of the fantastic efforts of the Girls and Boys Brigades who clear-up after the event.

Be sure to bring a picnic hamper and your carol sheet which is printed in The Canberra Times.

As we head towards the festive season, there is plenty in store for members whether it’s our great entertainment line-up including 2006 Australian Idol winner Damien Leith, celebrating New Year’s Eve in-style with a dinner cruise aboard the MV Southern Cross or bringing the children to The Greatest Show on Earth – the Avengers Side Show Alley (more on page 15).

The New Year marks the end of the Club’s 40th Anniversary celebrations – and with it a fantastic year of retrospective dining events, brilliant prizes, great entertainment and our 40th Anniversary Gala event which was truly a night to remember!

We’ve enjoyed hearing the wonderful stories from our Members recalling the experiences they’ve had at the Club over the years which are documented in the publication, The Canberra Southern Cross Club – A Collection of Stories 1972-2012. Amongst these stories, it’s been inspiring to see how generations of our Members have had their lives so closely interwoven with the Club.

We look forward to helping future generations of Members continue to be so involved: from participating in our sporting and social communities to seeing shows, eating at our restaurants and holding important milestone events such as birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. I thank everyone who contributed to making our 40th year celebrations such a success.

2013 promises to be just as exciting. With the major refurbishments completed at the Yacht Club, be sure to drop in and see the changes including a stunning new menu. It’s the perfect time of year to enjoy lunch or dinner overlooking the water or fish and chips over the weekend.

I wish you and your family all the best for Christmas and New Year and a safe and happy summer break.

Greg Mitchell Chief Executive Officer

Having worked in the arts industry for many years either teaching, working in galleries or exhibiting her own work, Heather Acton was asked to take up the position of teaching art at the Southern Cross Club Art Group.

“I love working with older people in particular because they have amazing life experiences and with a bit of encouragement, these come through in their work.”

Heather has found that many people who do the classes have had no former art experience.

“There are people who’ve always wanted to learn but have never had the opportunity or confidence,” she says. “We offer a really friendly and encouraging environment to help people discover their potential and I’m always blown away by their enthusiasm and brilliant efforts.”

Heather has seen students transform from being tentative about letting anyone see their work to being excited and thrilled at seeing their work framed, on exhibition and even being purchased.

That’s what art is all about... Experimenting, having fun and pushing the boundaries.

Because of the varying levels of experience in the class, Heather’s role varies from being a guide and helping participants realise their own creative dreams to providing tuition in particular areas if they need it.

“Because drawing is the foundation of all art making, we do spend a lot of time dedicated to this”, says Heather. “But we also experiment with different mediums. During one session, I got out a box of pastels and we did a group piece. Contrary to people’s ideas of what artists are like, we didn’t fight but had a lot of fun producing a lovely piece of work.”

This work was exhibited at their art exhibition in July and was bought by a Member who fell in love with it. “With the money we received, I’ve gone out and bought new canvases so that as a group, we can decide on a particular theme and all have a go at creating something,” says Heather.

The mediums that the group works in vary from watercolours, oils and acrylics to printmaking. But the main material that Heather insists on is the willingness to “give it a go”.

“That’s what art is all about,” she says. “Experimenting, having fun and pushing the boundaries.”

The Art Classes are held every Friday at 9.30am. For more information, please contact Lynda Wade at our Woden venue on 6283 7200.

Less stressOne of the greatest benefits of hosting a smaller event is the reduction in the amount of stress you are likely to experience. Not only is your event likely to go more smoothly, but the planning process will as well.

Save moneyIf you are working with a smaller budget, an event with less people will allow you to pull off a fabulous event without breaking the bank.

More intimate experienceLarger events can be a bit impersonal. You may have friends or family members attending that you haven’t seen in years and who you may know little or nothing about. Smaller gatherings allow you to share and cherish your special event with those who are closest to you and who you love and care about the most.

A chance to do something differentPerhaps you’d like to provide each guest with a ‘party bag’ or would love to have your favourite local band perform. Or maybe you’d like to have a karaoke show. When you reduce the number of people who are attending your event, you can spend more on food, entertainment and theming to provide friends and family with a more unique and inclusive experience.

functions

If you’re planning an event, think about being more selective with your guest list so that you can spend more on creating an unforgettable high-end experience with the people that matter most. Some of the benefits that can be gained by having a smaller sized event include:

If you’re like most people, your New Year’s resolution probably has a health and fitness related component. At the Southern Cross Health Club and our Anytime Fitness clubs in Woden, Tuggeranong and Jamison, our aim is to take this resolution and help you achieve lasting results. So if you want to make your health and fitness resolutions work all year long, here are some tips to make this year the year you do it:

Adjust your attitude. Instead of looking at exercise as a punishing or painful activity, see it as a welcome break from work, a chance to boost your mood and energy and a way to improve your qualify of life immediately.

Don’t go it alone! Research studies have shown that assistance from fitness professionals greatly improves people’s success rate. Our personal trainers will work with you every step of the way to help you achieve your

goals with achievable and workable training programs that are tailored to your specific needs.

Set clear concise SMART goals. Not having a clear idea of what and why you are trying to achieve your goal will set you up for failure. Remember your goals should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and have a Time constraint.

Reward yourself with each milestone. If you’ve stuck with your resolution for 2 months, treat yourself to something special. But instead of giving yourself a piece of cake, choose something non-food related, like a professional massage.

Make it fun. Try a new class, work out with a friend or sign up for our Bootcamp. By keeping it new and interesting, you’ll find yourself looking forward to your work out sessions.

Give your body a gift this festive season by joining the Southern Cross health Club and achieving the fitness goals you’ve always wanted.
