Junior Shaggers Finish 2016 with Group Lessons & Dance Juniors spend the Second Saturday with CSC at The Phoenix in Greenville

Young shaggers, parents and relatives

gathered at The Phoenix in Greenville Saturday afternoon, August 13th as Carolina Shag Club finished out the Junior Shaggers season for 2016. Jeff and Dede Ward taught a basic shag step, dishrag turn and an underarm lead-follow step during the practice. Several members of Carolina Shag Club also took to the floor to assist with the lessons and take time to socialize with the children.

Many of the kids and their chaperones stayed until 9:00 p.m. at Greenville Pub (Phoenix’ bar) to dance with friends and adults, enjoy food and drinks, stay out of the heat and listen to DJ Todd Gettys’ music.

Another Junior Shagger series is planned to begin next spring. More details will be forthcoming.

13th Annual Meet Me In the Middle (MMIM) Party…

The Carolina Shag Club held the 13th annual ‘Meet Me in the Middle For a Sand Flea Reunion” (MMIM) party on August 5-6th at The Hilton Hotel in Greenville, S.C. The annual party features DJs beginning on Friday afternoon at 5:00 p.m., a charity silent auction room, free Sand Flea Drink and Margarita adult beverages (there is a time limit on these). Also featured are the Junior Shaggers “Dancing for Dollars” to support the Ellen Taylor Foundation, a free shag step workshop (featuring CSC’s own Jeff and Dede Ward), assorted vendors, raffles and a Saturday evening Southern themed buffet.

Steve Woodard, MMIM’s chairperson organizer said that MMIM was a lot of fun and a big success.

“We sold 225 weekend tickets and approximately 25 day tickets were also purchased this year. I believe we also netted about $2,700 on the silent auction.” MMIM’s silent auction proceeds typically go toward supporting the club’s charities such as Ellen Taylor Foundation and Camp Courage. Most clubs in the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs organization support at least one charity or other non-profit.

Diane Steele of Greer, S.C. and her husband, John happily display their $437 winnings from the 50/50 Split-the-Pot drawing on Saturday night at Meet Me in the Middle. The drawing is typically held around 10:00 p.m. on Saturday evening to not conflict with the Junior Shaggers raffle conducted on Friday night.

Steve Day of Boiling Springs, S.C. won $83 from the Duck Race on Saturday afternoon at the MMIM pool party. Pool parties often help fill in the afternoon during MMIM. The party also featured a DJ (“Soup” Campbell) in the ballroom for those who preferred to not sit out in the 95° heat and high humidity.

Saturday Pig Pickin’ at ‘Wilson’s Farm’

Carolina Shag Club members and guests enjoyed the club’s annual Pig Pickin’ on Saturday, August 27th at Rick and Becky Wilson’s farm in Grey Court, S.C. The Pig Pickin’ has become an annual outing for club members. It began several years ago on Rick’s 50th birthday celebration (Yes! Rick cooked everyone a meal on HIS birthday. Thanks, Rick for beginning an annual tradition).

While the Carolina Shag Club purchases the pig, club members dress out the remainder of the party with their own covered dishes. Each year there is an assortment of baked beans, vegetables, salads, potato dishes, breads and desserts. Other members often add to the venue by bringing a variety of adult beverages.

And as the sun set across the pasture, Scott Kerwin, a member from Central, S.C. set up a fireworks display that included airburst styles called “Chrysanthemum”, “Fish”, “Spider”, “Palm” and “Crossette.” This is the second year that Scott has provided an impressive fireworks show at the “Pickin.”

Elaine Wilson (center, right) celebrated her 70th birthday with several friends before the fireworks display. “Young Elaine” masks were given to all.
