Current problems with Virtual Economy Crime and fraud

July 2007, a hacker stole an equivalent of US $10,000 from a stock exchange computer

Ginko Bank left Second Life with about US $75,000 in real-money deposits

Instability No government means no fiscal policy to get the virtual

economy out of recession or inflation Imbalance between in-game currency creation and US dollar

revenue can lead to inflation



Current problems with Virtual Economy Owner company has “Power of God”

Ability to create laws that give unfair advantage to some virtual companies

Or laws that can destroy some other virtual companies Tax

Currently, income is taxable only when exchanged back to US dollars
