THE KNOW HOW Our valve represents an important stepforward in cryogenic valve applicationsby providing superior tightness thanks toits seating and rotationalcharacteristics. These derive from aningenious combination of the tripleoffset design with the use of an elasticmetal seal ring.

VANESSA SEAL RINGDue to the elasticity and the radialcompression of the seal ring, thecontact pressure is uniformly distributedaround the seating surface.

OFFSET 1 The shaft is placed behindthe plane of the sealing surface. Thepurpose of this offset is to have acontinuous seat path.

OFFSET 2 The shaft is placed to oneside of the pipe / valve centerline. Thepurpose of this offset is to allow thedisplacement of the seal from the seatduring the 90° opening.

OFFSET 3 The seat and seal conecenterlines are inclined in respect tothe pipe / valve centerline. This thirdoffset completely eliminates rubbing.

THE PRODUCT

DOUBLE FLANGED BODYThemost widely used pipe connection - itenables the best gasket load distributionand short bolting reduces the risk ofstretching. The standardized flangedesign also ensures safe pipe jointingand ease of assembly/disassembly fromthe line. Vanessa provides ASME and ENflanges including designs to ASME VIIIsect 2 div.1.

BUTTWELD BODYThe ideal choice whenever flangedconnections need to be reduced, thisdesign provides significant initial costsavings. The buttweld body completelyeliminates the possibility of fugitiveemissions through flanged joints inducedby the adjacent pipe stresses. As for allVanessa valves, ongoingmaintenance isnot required.

LUG BODYA single flange design andmoreeconomical than double flanged, as itrequires less material. With threadedinserts on both sides, it is installed usingtwo sets of bolts and no nuts. Accordingto common industry practises, operatorstend to avoid using this body style fordiameters higher than 36” due tooperational difficulties in installing thevalve.

BUTTWELD TOP ENTRY BODYWhen an inline maintenance capability ismandatory, this design allows for accesswithout removing the valve body from theline. The entire valve trim can beremoved from the body and individualvalve parts can be accessed in totalsafety. This feature allows for anyunpredictable and extraordinary valverepair, which would be impossible,impractical or unsafe with different valvedesigns. Overall, the maintenance of aVanessa valve remains largelyunnecessary throughout the productlifecycle.

VANESSA’S TRIM HAS BEENDESIGNED TO BE COMPLETELYMAINTENANCE-FREE ON MOSTCRYOGENIC FLUID APPLICATIONS.The elimination of any soft componentsin the sealingmechanism removes therisks of material embrittlement,premature wear and consequent needfor early replacement.

The chemical andmechanical propertiesof our sealing elements, combined withthe triple offset non-rubbing design,ensure extremely long valve life. Withproper valve handling, installation, use

and sufficient pre-installation equipmentcleaning, valve maintenance can becompletely eliminated.

All Vanessa cryogenic triple offset valvesare Type Approval Tested (TAT) againststringent criteria simulating eitherinline/offline tightness after repeatedopen/close cycles under maximumdesign pressure with helium in cryogenicconditions as well as ambient conditions.Their fire-safe external seals arecertified to ISO 15848 part-1, EPAmethod 21 and TA Luft.

MAINTENANCE-FREETRIM DESIGN

RELIABLELONG TERM SHUT-OFF PERFORMANCEOUR STANDARD BODY SEAT HAS AWELD OVERLAY OF STELLITE® GRADE21 AND WE EXCLUSIVELY USEFORGED ONE-PIECE METAL SEALRINGS.This creates the perfect combination ofrobust and flexible materials resulting inreliable, long term shut-off performanceat cryogenic temperatures. Stellite® 21 isa cobalt alloy that coats the body seat toprovide hardness, resistance to fluidabrasion and wear, while ensuring highcorrosion resistance. It will last for theentire valve/plant life for gaseous as wellas liquid natural gas. High tech weldingrobots and Vanessa IWE (InternationalWelding Engineer) qualified personnelensure quality andmaximum reliability ofthese overlays.

Using polymers or other softcomponents for valve sealingsignificantly limits its ability to achieveconsistent tightness over time. Vanessaemploys UNS 520910 (or Nitronic® 50), anaustenitic stainless steel, which is highlyresistant to corrosion while keepingimportant mechanical features at lowtemperatures. It also has exceptionalyield strength, approximately double thatof other series 300 stainless steels atambient temperature.

LNG PLANTAlthough LNG plants were firstdeveloped in the 1930s, liquefactiontrains are now being built withsignificantly larger capacity to generatehigher outputs in response to growingworldwide demand. The key challengefor valve manufacturers is to producelarge sizes (up to 100”) that can handlehigh pressures (class 600) in pressurecontrol, isolation, emergency operationsandmajor equipment protectivefunctions. Whether methane, ethane,propane or butane, liquefied gas createscritical safety risks due to its highflammability. Vanessa provides a highlyrobust 100% fire safe solution that hasbeen proven in LNG plants for more than

25 years across applications traditionallyhandled by ball, gate and globe valves. Incomparison, Vanessa ensures improvedperformance and reliability combinedwith compact design and lower weight, amajor advantage on process equipmentskids.

LNG TERMINALSSuitable for both liquid and vapor LNGservices, Vanessa valves are used forisolation and, most importantly, as plantshutdown valves. Vanessa hasbuilt a strong reputation in this field overmany years, with valves in service at LNGterminals located around the globe.Typical specifications for LNG terminalsinclude valves ranging from 6” to 42” insize, handling pressures of 150 class upto 900 class.

WHEREVER THERE’S A NEED FOROUTSTANDING VALVEPERFORMANCE IN CRYOGENICPROCESSES, VANESSA CAN PROVIDETHE SOLUTION.

AIR SEPARATION UNITSIn a typical air separation unit (ASU) theair is subject to fivemain processes:filtration, compression, purification,cooling and distillation. After purification,the air is flown in the cold box and cooleddown to liquefaction temperature. At thispoint the air is introduced into the first ofseveral distillation columns. The wholeprocess is extremely cold, so a keyfeature of cryogenic distillation iseffective cold box insulation which istypically achieved using perlite. Theentire cold box is filled with fine granulesof perlite to insulate the process vesselsand piping from ambient heat. Thisrequires extremely reliable cryogenicequipment including valves able tocontrol and isolate cryogenic liquids andgases while installed and sealed in thecold box’s core. Vanessa provides

cryogenic valves designed to meet coldbox requirements to BS6364 or individualcustomer specifications. The product’sreliability and robustness, combined withits maintenance-free design, makes itthe ideal choice for this application.

AEROSPACEIt is vital that propellant systems onrocket engine test stands operate in totalsafety. In addition to basic cryogenic valverequirements, Vanessa is able to fulfillthe need for critical cleaning, eliminationof any trace of flammable hydrocarbonsand use of qualifiedmaterials like virginTeflon for stem seals. Our valve iscapable of delivering consistentoperation after repeated thermal cycling,usually ranging from 38°C (100°F) to-253°C (-423°F) with a leak raterequirement of nomore than one sccmper inch of nominal valve size. Usingsuitable material specifications, theVanessa valve is also fully compatiblewith liquid oxygen.

The reliability androbustness of Vanessavalves, combined with theirmaintenance free design,makes them the idealchoice for cryogenic valveapplications.

LARGE SCALE CRYOGENIC VALVE MANUFACTURINGCAPABILITIES AND STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITIES

WHATMAKES OUR PLANT DIFFERENTFROMMANY OTHERS IS THE ABILITYTO PRODUCE THOUSANDS OFCRYOGENIC VALVES EVERY YEARFROM FULL VACUUM TO 250 BARS INSIZES BETWEEN 3” AND 140”.This is coupled with vast in-houseinfrastructure which is necessary todeliver reliable, robust and durablecryogenic valves. In fact, such large-scale output requires state-of-the-artstainless pickling and passivation,cleaning (including drying), assembling,testing, protection and packagingcapabilities, ensuring that all ourproducts are delivered to the higheststandards of integrity and quality.

We have two separate cryogenic testingfacilities operating in parallel, both ofwhich are equipped with digitalinstrumentation: one is for valves up to72” with 8,000 litres liquid nitrogen tanksand a 10 ton crane. The second, a largerfacility, can handle valves up to 140” witha 30,000 litres liquid nitrogen tank and a20 ton crane. Testing is observed viaclose circuit TV for total safety.

Our valves fulfill the requirements ofinternationally recognized standards, andare tested through the use of a massspectrometer helium tester for fugitiveemission detection. These tests are oftencritical as fugitive emissions are not onlylinked to loss of product/plant output but

their reduction can significantly minimizepipe system risks related to personneland the environment.

Our cryogenic valves are carefullyprotected against moisture and dustprior to shipping. Whenever criticaloxygen/hydrogen fluids are involved, thewhole cleaning and assembly of thevalves takes place in a dedicatedcleaning room, remote frommanufacturing andmachiningoperations.
