CRUISING THE KIMBERLEY FROM BROOME TO DARWIN
Sunday 19 July - Friday 31 July 2020
12 nights
JOURNEYS
TOUR OVERVIEW We invite you to discover the world’s last, and possibly most pristine, wilderness - the remarkable Kimberley, an
area covering more than 400,000 square kilometres in North West Australia. Travelling by small ship will allow you
to access all of the icons of the coast that are inaccessible by road. From towering waterfalls to secluded gorges,
imposing rock ridges to wide savannah plains, the breath-taking outback landscapes of the Kimberley provide a
unique experience. You will see the world’s oldest indigenous rock art and hear legends of Australia’s pioneering
past. Nature lovers will revel in the abundance of bird and wildlife including the salt water crocodile in this area.
With two landings most days and the expert local knowledge of the experienced guides, you are assured of
making the most of every minute of your journey. Aboard your expedition vessel, which accommodates up to
120 guests in air-conditioned, en-suite cabins, you will travel in total comfort and unrivalled style. A Calder &
Lawson Tours tour manager will take the group from Auckland to Broome and be with you until you board the
ship. Because you will be very well looked after on the cruise, a tour manager will not accompany the group
while on board. The tour manager will meet the group in Darwin and escort the group home to New Zealand.

phenomenon of the

IS THIS TOUR FOR ME? With a strong focus on visiting places not
often touched by tourists, the shore
excursions are designed to promote local
interaction and cultural exchange. One of
the benefits of travelling on a small ship is
the ability to make impromptu stops. The
small group size ensures that shore
excursions are comfortable and have
minimal impact on the communities and
environments visited. The excursion tender
‘Xplorer’ is boarded directly from the ship’s
main deck, before the hydraulic platform
gently lowers into the water, avoiding the
need to clamber aboard or get your feet
wet. Exploration in the inflatable zodiac may
require a bit more clambering in and out of
the boat.

DAILY ITINERARY
Depart today for your flight to Perth. On arrival in Perth early this evening,
you will be transferred to your overnight hotel. Enjoy dinner with your Calder
& Lawson Tours tour manager
After breakfast you will transfer to the airport for your flight to Broome. Later
in the afternoon, transfer to Coral Adventurer, your home for the next 10
nights, for a 5.00pm departure. This evening meet your fellow travellers and
friendly crew as you enjoy the Captain’s ‘Welcome Aboard’ Cocktails.
Cruise through Pender Bay today to visit the Lacepede Islands, a series of
low islands consisting of coarse sand and coral rubble lying atop a platform
reef. This nature reserve has been identified by BirdLife International as an
important bird area. There are up to 18,000 breeding pairs of Brown Boobies
and Roseale Terns, possibly the largest such population in the world. The
islands are also renowned as Western Australia’s most significant breeding
grounds for the Green Turtle.
Explore Silica Beach on Hidden Island with its stunning white sands and
crystal clear waters. Cruise through the Buccaneer Archipelago, home to
over 800 islands. In Talbot Bay the region’s 12 metre tides create an amazing
spectacle, the Horizontal Falls, described by Sir David Attenborough as ‘one
of the greatest natural wonders in the world’. The amazing power of the Falls
is revealed when the region’s 12 metre tides turn, forcing millions of litres of
water to rush through the narrow gaps between the cliffs.
This morning board the Explorer, the specially designed excursion vessel
which will take you to Red Cone Creek to enjoy a leisurely swim at Ruby
Falls. Then cruise through Kuri Bay, home of the south sea pearl industry. You
will go ashore at Raft Point and visit a secluded and very interesting
aboriginal rock art gallery to view Wandjina art and the mysterious
Bradshaw Paintings (Gwlon), thought to be the world’s oldest indigenous art,
dating back over 20,000 years.
Today you will cruise through the Buccaneer Archipelago, home to more
than 800 islands, and experience two of the most unforgettable highlights of
the Kimberley Coast. Cruise through scenic Doubtful Bay, then see
Montgomery Reef rise out of the ocean as the tide ebbs, and discover the
diverse marine life including turtles, manta rays and reef sharks.
Visit the breath-taking King Cascade, an unusual and picturesque waterfall
cascading over terraced rock formation into the river. Later visit beautiful
Camp Creek for a picnic lunch and the opportunity to swim in fresh water
ponds. If you are feeling more adventurous, you may like to join a nature
walk, keeping an eye out for native Kimberley birdlife.
At the southern end of the York Sound lies one of the most spectacular
locations in the Kimberley: Prince Frederick Harbour. It is home to many
islands, mangroves and monsoon rainforests, set against a backdrop of
steep red escarpment. White-bellied sea eagles and other birds of prey are
often seen here, and at low tide expansive mudflats reveal large
populations of various mudskippers and mangrove crabs. Spot massive
saltwater crocodiles on a cruise up Porosus Creek, visit art sites, and marvel
at rock formations.
Carved through layers of sandstone, Mitchell Falls descends over four tiers,
creating pools of emerald green on each level. The option to take a scenic
helicopter flight will give you a breathtaking view, or alternatively explore
the sandstone caves of Hathway’s Hideaway or enjoy a catch and release
fishing excursion. Swift Bay reveals a series of fine Wandjina art galleries.
