INTRODUCTION
The Cruickshank name is extremely common in the north east of Scotland.
Many name variants include Cruickshank(s), Crookshank(s), Crukschank(s), Crushank(s), Cruikshank(s).
Black in his book "The Surnames of Scotland" describes the surname as follows:
"The earliest spelling is always in the singular and the two counties in which the name is most intimately
connected are Kincardine and Aberdeen, and in the former we have the river Cruicks rising in the parish of
Fearn and joining the North Esk near the Kirk of Stracathro."
The most common belief is that the name derives from the physical deformity of a "crooked leg" but Black states that this is
unlikely.
The first name mentioned by Black in the Aberdeenshire area is "Cristinus Cru[k]shank who was admitted Burgess of
Aberdeen circa 1408.
We have been unable to trace our family as far back as this, but we have positively traced the family to one, John
CRUICKSHANK who was born in Banffshire around 1728 and who married a Margaret Littlejohn.
It is possible that John (above) is a descendant of Thomas Cruickshank (Crookshank) who was born in 1692 in Keith,
Banffshire and who married Jean Broug born 1697 Keith but without positive evidence, we have been unable to link John to
this family. Thomas and Jean had at least five children that we know of, all of whom were born in Keith, Banffshire (plus
possibly our John, born circa 1728) -
1. Alexander Crookshank, born 27 April 1718, Keith
2. Jannet Cruickshank also born 6 April 1721, Keith
3. James Cruickshank born 7 Nov 1723 Keith
4. William Cruickshank born 4 Feb 1727 Keith and
married 26 June 1760 Jean Bennet (born 1730 Keith)

Because of the lack of evidence linking John to Thomas Cruickshank and Jean Broug, we have started the descendancy from
John himself with the hope, that in time, we can find the missing link.
Our Cruickshank family had farmed and lived in Knauchland, Rothiemay since the 1600's.
In a report for "The Proceedings of the Archaeological Society dated June 1868" a Mr. James Hunter from Banff reported that
when he was looking for evidence of "stones sculptured with cups and circles - i.e. gravestones" he interviewed a Mr
Cruickshank at a farm in Knauchland, who knew of such a place on his farm. Mr. Cruickshank stated "that the farm had
been in his family for two hundred years". Mr. Cruickshank is described as being about sixty or seventy years old. Mr.
Cruickshank went on to describe how his grandfather had hidden his "cheese" in a stone grave in the ruins of Knauchland Kirk
next to his farm. (At one time there was an ancient church in Knauchland with a small graveyard but the only remains of this
in 1868 were part of a wall and the remains of one or two stones where the graves would have been. He hid the cheese to avoid
it being taken by the "rebels" and from this comment we presume he means the Jacobean1 rebels who marched with Bonnie
Prince Charlie on his way south to Edinburgh. We presume that his grandfather was John Cruickshank born circa 1728 a
crofter in Knauchland born, circa 1728 and who married Margaret Littlejohn in 1748.

1 Timeline: Jacobean uprising 1745 when Charles Edw. Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) raised his standard at Glenfinnan to claim the British
throne. His grandfather was James II of England. The Jacobites were defeated at the battle of Culloden in 1746 and in 1747 the Proscription Act was then introduced banning all Scots from wearing tartan and carrying weapons.

The family continued to farm here for at least another 100 years.

First Generation
1. The earliest of our Cruickshank family member that can positively be traced starts with John CRUICKSHANK who was
born circa 1728 possibly in Rothiemay, a small village in the county of Banffshire, in the north-eastern part of Scotland.
Although we cannot find a marriage entry for John we do know that his wife was Margaret LITTLEJOHN whom he
married, or at least declared he was married, sometime around 1747 as their first child was born in January 1748.
Margaret LITTLEJOHN was born circa 1725 in Keith, Banffshire
We know from the baptismal records in Rothiemay that John Cruikshank (or Crushank), a Farmer in Knauchland and
Margaret had at least 7 children as follows:

8. William CRUICKSHANK, son of John CRUICKSHANK and Margaret LITTLEJOHN, was born in 1763 in Rothiemay
and baptised on 13 January 1763 in Rothiemay.

Jan 13 1763, John Crushank [note spelling variation] in Knauchlin had a child by his wife Margaret Littlejohn
baptized named William. Witnesses Wm. Crushank in ......James Crushank in Rothiemay, Margt Duff and
Elspet Gerran in Knauchlin. William became a Farmer in Knauchland, Rothiemay.
William married but the name of his wife is not certain at this stage. There is a marriage between William Cruickshank and a
Jannet Nicol on 25 July in 1780 in Rothiemay (as per Scotland's People) that would seem fit with our family.
However we do know that William had two children, William born circa 1780 and John born circa 1781 but we have been
unable to find baptism entries for the children and therefore do not know who their mother was.
William CRUICKSHANK had the following children:

Third Generation
9. William CRUICKSHANK, son of William CRUICKSHANK, was born in circa 1780 in Rothiemay, Banffshire.
William married Isobel [Isobella] GAULD OR GALL on 20 August 1800 in Rothiemay (as per Familysearch and
Scotland's People) Isobel GALL or GAULD, the daughter of James GAULD (1760?- ) and Elisabeth GORDON (1760?- ), was born in 1784 in
Cairnborrow, Cairnie by Huntly, and baptised 19 January 1784 in Cairnie by Huntly, Aberdeenshire in the presence of Alex
Smith in .........and George Gauld in Parkhall (as per copy of baptism entry from Scotland's People)
William CRUICKSHANK and Isobel (nee Gaul or Gall) had the following children:

+12 Margaret CRUICKSHANK (1803- ) born Rothiemay, Banffshire

William, a farmer (possibly a tenant Farmer), appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 at Shielparks in Rothiemay aged 55 with
his wife Isobella, age 50.
We cannot find any records for either William or Isabella after this time and therefore it is possible that they both died
sometime between 1841 and 1851.
10. John CRUICKSHANK, son of William CRUICKSHANK, was born in circa 1781 (approx.). He was a Farmer in
Knauchland, Rothiemay who married Jane or Jean TAYLOR on 21 June 1804 in Rothiemay (as per copy of original
marriage entry from Scotland's People.)
Jane Taylor was the daughter of William Taylor (a Farmer) and Margaret Sharpe (info taken from Jane's death certificate).
In 1841 Jane or Jean (a widow) is living with her son John and daughter in law Margaret (nee Reid) in Knaughland, Rothiemay
and by 1851 at the age of 69 she is living on her own in Knaughland but next door to her son John. From these census
returns we were able to establish that Jean/Jane was born circa 1781 in Rothiemay.
Despite extensive online search we can find no death registration for John Cruickshank but it is safe to assume that he died in
Knauchland, Rothiemay and buried in Rothiemay Churchyard.
Jane Cruickshank (nee Taylor) died on 12 January 1860 at Knauchland, aged 78. Copy of original death certificate from
Scotland's People shows that:-
Jane Cruickshank, Widow of a Farmer, died 12 January 1860 at Knauchland, age 78.
Daughter of William Taylor, Farmer (deceased) and Margaret Taylor (nee Sharpe) [deceased].
COD = Influenza for 2 weeks. Buried Churchyard of Rothiemay.
Death registered by her son John Cruickshank.
Jane and John CRUICKSHANK had the following children:

Fourth Generation
11. John CRUICKSHANK, son of William CRUICKSHANK and Isobel [Isobella] GAULD OR GALL, was born on 18
October 1801 in Rotnoddie, Rothiemay, Banffshire and christened on 25 October 1801 (as per copy of original baptism from
Scotland's People) in Rothiemay Church.
John married Mary LARGUE circa 1823 possibly in the Rothiemay/Marnoch or Aberchirder part of Banffshire. We have
been unable to find a marriage entry for this couple, but the baptism entries for their children show that were certainly married
(or declared themselves to be married). Also the couple's marriage is confirmed by John's trial at Elgin Court, Moray where
he admitted he was "guilty of bigamy" (see story later in this section)
Mary Largue was the daughter of James Largue, a Farmer (as per her death certificate), who was born circa 1800 in Forglen
(she states this birth place twice during the census years).
Mary and John had the following children:

+24 Mary CRUICKSHANK (1830- ) born Mains of Bognie, Banffshire (next door to Forgue)
+25 Jane CRUICKSHANK (1834- ) born Marnoch, Banffshire
+26 George Andrew CRUICKSHANK (1836-to1881) born Marnoch, Banffshire
John was a tenant farmer at Roughpark2. By 1841 the census shows that both John, his wife Mary and two of his children,
Jane and George, were living at Elrick Farm, near Marnoch where John was again working as a tenant agricultural labourer.
Their eldest child John was not present at this census and was perhaps working away from home. Their daughter Mary is
recorded as working as a Farm Servant, age 13, in the household of James Morison, a Farmer living at Upper Mill,
2 Roughpark is at Crannoch is about six miles from Rothiemay.

Auchterless (just a few miles away from Rothiemay & Marnoch). We have found no further information relating to John or
his sister Mary.
It would appear that John Cruickshank Snr. had deserted Mary sometime between 1841 and 1848 as he bigamously married an
Isabella Sutherland on 9 June 1848 in Elgin, Morayshire. Isabella was born 1815 in Elgin and was the daughter of George
Sutherland, a labourer, and Margaret Milne.
A newspaper article from the Banff Journal dated 16 Jan 1849, page 3, column 3, states that George Cruickshank [we have his
Christian name of John] was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment for bigamously marrying an Isabella SUTHERLAND
from Elgin on 9 June 1848.
"CASE OF BIGAMY
On Thursday last, a person of the name of George Cruickshank [note this should have been John
Cruickshank] was tried at Elgin before Sheriff Cameron, and a jury, charged with bigamy, having married
at Elgin on 9th June last, Isabella Sutherland, residing there, while his first wife, Mary Largue, residing at
Knows of Elrick, in the parish of Inverkeithny, was still alive. Cruickshank pled guilty, and was sentenced
to six months' imprisonment".
On searching the 1851 census we found that Mary Cruickshank (nee Largue) was living alone with her son George, age 14, at
Lootcherbrae and is recorded as a farm labourer's wife. As for John, he continued to live as the husband of Isabella for nine
years after their bogus marriage and the 1851 census returns shows that John, age 43, living at Forteath Close, Elgin, Moray
was working as an agricultural labourer with his "wife" Isabella, age 30 and a "son" John Cruickshank born in Elgin in 1850!
There is no evidence of a baptism for their son John who was certainly born illegitimately.
Mary Cruickshank, John's legal wife, continued to live at Lootcherbrae making her living as a Stocking Knitter. At the age of
about 73, Mary died from a tragic accident on 12 December 1868 when she was found drowned in a Mill Pond at Cornhill of
Park (just a few miles from her home) by some men working a Threshing machine. It was presumed that Mary had slipped and
fell into the Mill Pond.
A Coroner's inquest was held and the result was "Accidental Death". Her death certificate shows that Mary's immediate
neighbour, George Seivwright/Sivewright, shoemaker and Crofter Farmer was the death informant. He stated that Mary's
father was James Largue, a Farmer but the name of Mary's mother was unknown.
A local newspaper dated 18th December 1868 reported the incident as follows:
"Woman Drowned -
A woman was missed on Saturday night last at Knowes of Elrick, halfway between Cornhill of Park,
Aberchirder. Diligent search was made, but no trace of her was found until Tuesday. On that day in
the ordinary course of work on a farm there, thrashing had to be done, and the mill dam was run out,
when the body was unexpectedly found in the bottom of it. The body was found in about four feet of
water, and the key of the house was hanging on one of the fingers. It is believed the poor woman
having to pass the dam, slipped her foot and fell into the water. She was Mrs. Cruickshank aged
about 70 years from Knowes of Elrick."
Mary was probably buried either in Marnoch churchyard or Rothiemay churchyard. There is no reference to her burial in
Marnoch and the M.I's for Rothiemay are unavailable at this time.

Meanwhile by 1861 her husband John Cruickshank had moved to 78 Barron Street, Old Machar, Aberdeenshire and was now
working as a Paper Maker. With him was his son John, now aged 10, and his bogus wife Isabella SUTHERLAND. We
discovered that Isabella had died on 17 December 1858 at 105 High Street, Elgin, Morayshire. There is no cause of death
stated on the death certificate but the informant was John Cruickshank, widower. The certificate also shows that Isabella was
buried in Cathedral churchyard, Elgin.
John, age 64, married again on 20 March 1867 (again this was a bigamous marriage as his legal wife Mary Largue was still
alive!). However, this time he seems to have escaped prosecution.
The marriage certificate shows that his new spouse was Isabell(sic) RAE (born in 1822 in Drumoak, Aberdeenshire). The
couple were married according to the Banns of the Church of Scotland at Correction Wynd, Aberdeen.
John's age is given as 64, a Widower and working as a labourer. Isabella Rae is aged 45 and both were living at 79 Upper
Denburn, Aberdeen. John's parents were shown as William Cruickshank, Crofter (deceased) and Isabell Cruickshank (nee
Gall)(deceased). Isabella's parents were Alexander RAE, Farmer (deceased) and Helen Rae (nee Begg) (deceased).
Marriage witnesses were James Macfarlane and Agnes Ross. I'll bet that Isabella Rae didn't know he had a wife still alive at
the time!!
There were no children by this union.
In 1871 John Cruickshank snr. was living at 45 Causwayend, St. Nicholas, Aberdeenshire aged 70 with his wife Isabella, age
46, and his son John (by Isabella Sutherland) aged 20, a labourer.
John died of Senile Debility on 11 November 1876 in Millers Pond, Session Street, Dundee (his home address) aged 76.

But what of John Cruickshank jnr (illegitimate son of John Cruickshank and Isabella SUTHERLAND)? Was he was aware
he had three step siblings by his father’s first and legal marriage?
John Cruickshank Jnr. became a jute softener met and married Amelia Ann MILNE in 1874 at Dundee and went on to have
three daughters of his own.

Infirmary, Edinburgh. Her father is given as John Cruickshanks, Gardener (deceased)
and her mother as Amelia Cruickshanks (m.s Mill). Wm. Crossan was a Millworker
living in Mid Calder whose parents were James Cross and Catherine Crossen (ms Fitzpatrick)
2. Margaret (Maggie) Milne Cruickshank(s) born 1887 in Dundee. Maggie married George CHRISTIE

3. Helen McIntosh Cruickshank(s) born 11 June 1891 in Dundee. Helen died on 11 April 1894.
Copy of death cert shows that Helen died aged 2 yrs and 9 months from pneumonia which she had
had for one month.
Father is shown as John Cruickshanks a General Labourer and mother as Amelia Ann
Cruickshanks (ms Mill). Amelia registered Helen's death.
4.John Leon Louis CRUICKSHANK, son of John CRUICKSHANK and Amelia M. MILNE, was born on 3
June 1898 at 9 Lambs Close, Crosscauseway, Edinburgh. Sadly John, a Private, was killed in action
during WW1 but the dates and details of his death are controversial. We have an entry from Scotland's
People that shows he was killed on 23 September 1917 either in France or Belgium - service number
Service No. 246625 with the 6th Seaforth Highlanders. However, there is also a record of John at the
Thiepval Memorial in France. The "Find a Grave" website records his information as:
Private, 2nd Battalion, Welsh Regiment. Son of Amelia Cruickshanks, of
6 Dudhope Crescent Rd., Dundee and the late John Cruickshanks. Age 18.
The 1891 census shows that John, Amelia and daughters Agnes and Maggie were living at 212 Overgate, 2 Candle Close,
Dundee. John was working as a Jute Mill workman. We can find no census returns for either John or Amelia in the 1901
census.
John jnr. eventually worked as a gardener (as per the marriage certificate of his daughter Agnes). We have been unable to find
a death certificate for John Cruickshank Jnr but we do know that he died sometime between 1894 (he was still alive when his
daughter Helen died) and 1911 (Amelia states she was a widow in the 1911 census returns).
Amelia died from a cerebral haemorrhage on 26 March 1935 aged 80 at Dudhope Crescent Road, Dundee. Death was
registered by her daughter Agnes Crossan.
12. Margaret CRUICKSHANK, daughter of William CRUICKSHANK and Isobel [Isobella] GAULD OR GALL, was born
on 10 July 1803 in Rothiemay and baptised there in the same year. As per FamilySearch.org
Currently the only other record we have is that she appears, aged 20, with her parents during the 1841 census at
Shielparks, Rothiemay.
13. Elizabeth CRUICKSHANK, daughter of William CRUICKSHANK and Isobel [Isobella] GAULD OR GALL, was born
on 24 December 1805 in Rothiemay and baptised there on 29 December 1805 as per FamilySearch.org. Currently we
have no further information for Elizabeth.
14. William CRUICKSHANK, son of William CRUICKSHANK and Isobel [Isobella] GAULD OR GALL, was born on 9
February 1808 in Rothiemay and baptised there on 17 February 1808 as per FamilySearch.org. Currently we have no
further information for William.
15. Anne CRUICKSHANK, daughter of William CRUICKSHANK and Isobel [Isobella] GAULD OR GALL, was born on
14 November 1811 in Rothiemay and was baptised on 17 November 1811 in Banff, Banffshire as per FamilySearch.org.
Anne appears, aged 6, in the census of 1841 living with her parents in Shielpark, Rothiemay.
16. James CRUICKSHANK, son of William CRUICKSHANK and Isobel [Isobella] GAULD OR GALL, was born on 10
December 1813 in Rothiemay and baptised there on 12 December 1813 in Rothiemay as per FamilySearch.org.
19. John CRUICKSHANK, son of John CRUICKSHANK and Jean or Jane TAYLOR, was born 6 April 1805 and christened
7 April 1805 in Rothiemay [as per FamilySearch.org.]
In 1868 there is an article regarding the "Remains on the Farm of Knaughland, Rothiemay" in which John states his
family had the farm at Knaughland for 200 years. John was a Farmer of Knauchland, Rothiemay/Land Bailiff who
married Margaret REID, the daughter of James Reid a farmer, on 10 November 1836 in Rothiemay (as per copy of
original marriage entry from Scotland's People). Margaret was born in 1811 in Grange, Banffshire.
John died of Bronchopneumonia on 22 May 1886 in Kauchland, Rothiemay, Banffshire aged 81.

Marnoch, Banffshire (as per Scotland's People) Jane appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 aged 6 living at Elrick,
Marnoch, Banffshire with her parents John (a tenant farmer), Mary and her brother George.
In 1851 Jane now aged 17, was living at Darbrach, Rathven, Banffshire working as a house servant for John Reid a farmer
and his family.

George appeared in the census on 6 June 1841 in Marnoch aged 4 living at Elrick, Marnoch, Banffshire with his parents
John (a tenant farmer), Mary and his sister Jane.
By 1851, George now aged 15 was living at Lutcharbraes (i.e. Lootcherbrae), Marnoch, Banffshire with his mother Mary
(Note: His father John had deserted the family and was living in Elgin with his bigamous wife Isabella Sutherland [see
4th Generation - Item 11 for more information relating to this family])
George married Margaret GREIG on 11 June 1859 in MacDuff, Gamrie, Banffshire when he was 24 and she was 19. The
couple were married by the established Church of Scotland by Rev. Gordon Ingram, Minister of MacDuff. Witnesses were
James Murray and George Clark.
Margaret, the daughter of James Greig, a Corn Agent and Flesher, and Ann Stephen (see the GREIG BIBLIOGRAPHY) for
more information relating to her family) was born 23 April 1840 in MacDuff, Gamrie, Banffshire and christened there on the
18 May 1840.

George became a Baker in Banff and we find him in 1861, aged 23, living at 1 Reid Street Banff with his wife Margaret, aged
20, and two children, Ann (age 1) and James Cruickshank (age 1 month)
By 1871 George, now aged 31 and working as a Master Baker, living at 15 Market Place, Banff, Banffshire with his wife
Margaret (aged 29) His family had expanded ; he and Margaret now had 6 children living with them - Ann, age 11, James
aged 10, Maggie, age 7, Mary aged 5, Emily aged 3 and Jane aged 10 months, all born in the town of Banff.
In 1881 the family (all except George, who was possibly working the night this census was taken or had deserted the family)
were living at:
2 Water Lane, Banff. Present during this census was Margaret (his wife) aged 40 who is recorded as head of the house,
James William (his son) aged 20 and a labourer, Mary aged 15 working as a general servant, Jane aged 10 and George
aged 9.
On 28 September 1883 Margaret Cruickshank (nee Greig) died of Morbis Cordis (heart failure) at 23 Carmelite Street, Banff,
Banffshire aged 43 (as per copy of death certificate from Scotland's People. The death was reported by her son George. She
left behind two young children who were still living with her when she died - namely Jane aged 13 and George aged just 11.
After her death, Jane and George were sent to live with an Aunt (still no sign of their father George). Interestingly, when
Margaret Cruickshank (nee Greig) died at 23 Carmelite Street, Banff in 1883, living in the same flat was a Mary Dey, a
Dressmaker, aged 64 (born 1817). Possibly this Mary Dey was a relative of her son James William Greig Cruickshank, who
married one Margaret Dey.
We think George was still alive in 1885 when his son James William married. James' marriage certificate shows that his
mother Margaret Cruickshank (nee Greig) was deceased but not his father. However despite an extensive search for any
alternative first and surnames we have been unable to find George's death information anywhere in the UK or abroad.
What we do know is that according to George's great grand-daughter, Lois Holden, her father George Jnr had asked his father
to join him in America but his father did not go to the USA. After this, George jnr. lost all communication with his Scottish
roots.

Jane had 8 children, seven of whom were illegitimate but she eventually married the father
of her children, George Morin, in Glasgow 1914. She died in 1946 in Glasgow.

George emigrated to the USA sometime after 1892. He married Rose Laventure there in
1894 and died in Massachusetts in 1952.
27. John CRUICKSHANK, son of John CRUICKSHANK and Isabella SUTHERLAND, was born in 1850 in Elgin,
Morayshire. It would appear that John was an illegitimate child as his father had bigamously married John's mother,
Isabella Sutherland. Despite extensive search, no birth entry can be found for John.

had moved to 78 Barron Street, Old Machar, Aberdeenshire where is father was working as a Paper maker.
Ten years later, in 1871 we find John, aged 20, living with his father and his father's second bigamous wife Isabella
Cruickshank (nee RAE) at 45 Causwayend, St. Nicholas, Aberdeenshire. Young John was shown to be working as a
Labourer. John also worked as a Jute softener and a Street Musician (a Busker).
At some point between 1871 and 1874, John had moved to Dundee where on 29 May 1874 at Paradise Road, Dundee he
married Amelia Ann Milne, Amelia, a Jute Preparer, and the daughter of James Milne (a labourer) and Isabella Scott,
was born 1855 in Elgin (birth year taken from 1881 census)

Ten years later, in 1891 the family were living at 212 Overgate, 2 Candle Close, Dundee. John was still working in the Jute
Mill and was now aged 41. Living in the same household was his daughter Agnes (who is incorrectly shown to be aged
17) and another child Maggie, aged 4 who was born in Dundee.
The 1901 census shows that John and his family had moved to 14 Gilmour Street, Edinburgh (a 2 roomed flat) where, now
aged 50, he is recorded as working on his own account as a "Street Musician"! Strangely the name of his wife is not
shown on this census but she is recorded as being in the house aged 44 which fit with Amelia. Two of his children are
also recorded - Maggie age 13, a scholar, born in Forfar, Dundee and his 2 year old son John who was born in Edinburgh.
John died, aged 54, from Peritonitis on 25 March 1905 at Hill Street, Edinburgh.

Amelia seems to have moved back to Dundee as we find her during the 1911 census living at 211 Overgate, Dundee. She is
head of the house, now aged 55, and a widow. The census also records Andrew Cruickshank her grandson, age 1 as living
with her, together with two boarders, Mary Christie and her daughter Jane Christie (her daughter Margaret married a George
Christie who was possibly a relative of both Mary and Jane Christie)
On 26 March 1935 Amelia died from a cerebral haemorrhage and bronchitis at Dudhope Crescent Road, Dundee aged 80.

June 1859 in Low Shore, Banff, Banffshire. As per copy of birth cert from Scotland's People. She appeared in the census
"1871, 1881".
In 1871 she is living at 15 Market Place, Banff with her parents and siblings.
The 1881 Census for Scotland shows Ann S. Cruickshank living at 3 Hill Street, Fordyce, Banff living with Jane
Longmore Cooper an Annuitant and other members of this household. Ann's occupation is given as a "Nurse".
For some unknown reason, by 1891 Ann had moved to London where she was working as a Housemaid for Stamford R.
Thompson, Principal Clerk for the General Post Office at 44 Nottinghill Square, Kensington, London.
On 16 March 1893 Ann sailed from Glasgow to New York on the SS Furnessia with her sister in law Margaret Dey
Cruickshanks together with her nephew and nieces with the intention of joining her brother James William Cruickshank in
Pennsylvania, USA.
On 6 February 1894 Ann married David A. KILGORE in All Saints Episcopal Church, Johnstown, Cambria,
Pennsylvania, USA.

David was the son of James B. Kilgore and Elizabeth (Eliza). His father James was born in 1818 Pennsylvania and
worked in a Rolling Mill (as per the 1870 USA census returns) and his mother was born 1820 also in Pennsylvania.
David A. KILGORE was born in 1853 in Blairsville, Indiana, Pennsylvania
The 1900 census for Pennsylvania, shows that David and Annie, together with their three children, James E., Linus W and
Edward G. Kilgore were living in a rented house in West Taylor, Rosedale, Pennsylvania. David was working as a
labourer at that time.
The US city directory of 1926 records David and Annie living "h66 Benshoff Rd 14 w" (sic).
Ann died, aged 73, on 30 January 1933 in Rosedale, Pennsylvania, USA and was buried on 2 February 1933 in Grandview

February 1975. He was buried in the same cemetery as his parents at Grandview,

+46 Linus William KILGORE (1895-1957)
Drafted 12 Feb 1918 and discharged 12 June 1919. WW1 Draft Registration shows he
was short build, had grey eyes, light brown hair and was of slender build (this descript
differs from his WW2 draft papers). At the time he was working as a labourer in a Rolling
Mill. He lived in Rosedale, Pennsylvania at this time.
His WW2 draft papers show he was 5ft 11½f inches tall with brown eyes and was balding.
He is described as having a dark complexion. He was 46 when he was drafted and was
working in a Pipe Mill for the Bethlehem Steel Co at Sparrows Point, Balto Maryland. At
the time of his draft he was living at 58 Shipway, Dundalk, Baltimore, Maryland.
Linus married Evah W. (surname unknown) and at the time of his death, she was living at
7208 Dunwood Court, Baltimore 22, Maryland
Linus died, aged 61, on 7 January 1957 and was buried in Baltimore National Cemetery,
Section H, Site 3080.

Edward was born on 12 June 1898 Stonycreek Twp., Cambria, Pennsylvania and died on
26 January 1963 in Middle Taylor Tw, Cambria, Pennsylvania. He was buried in Benshoff
Hill Cemetery, Pennsylvania Edward married Dorothy Magdalene Rhoades on 31 May
1924 at Wheeling, Ohio, West Virginia, USA and had three daughters, Dorothy, Betty and
Clare Kilgore. He worked as a labourer in a Steel Mill.
In the 1940 census all the family were living at 349 Corrine Street, Johnston, Pennsylvania.
+48 Anthony Carl Roy KILGORE (1901-1977) Anthony was born 12 October 1901 in West
Taylor Twp, Cambria Pennsylvania and died on 10 April 177 at Middle Taylor Twp. He is
buried in Benshoff Hill Cemetery, Cambria, Pennsylvania.
36. James William Greig CRUICKSHANK, son of George Andrew CRUICKSHANK and Margaret GREIG, was born on 4
March 1861 in Reid Street, Banff, Banffshire (as per copy of his birth certificate from Scotland's People).
On 24 January 1885 he married Margaret Dey at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, in Banff, Banffshire. Margaret was the
daughter of Alexander Dey (b.1827) a Labourer and Margaret Isabella Chapman (b.1839). She was born 30 June 1867 in
Carmelite Street, Banff.

James worked as a Labourer/Iron Moulder Apprentice/Warehouse Foreman. Some time around 1892 he emigrated to
Johnstown, Pennsylvania possibly to look for work. His brother George also emigrated around this time; they could
have travelled together but we were unable to find them on any of the passenger or emigration lists. However, we did
find Margaret Cruickshank (his wife) who sailed on the SS Furnessia (steerage class) to New York and then on to
Pennsylvania with four children and sister in law Annie Cruickshank. It would appear from this list that James was
already living in Pennsylvania.
The USA census for 1900 shows that James was living with his family in Stonycreek Township (in the Johnstown area),
Pennsylvania. He had taken out a mortgage on a house and was working as an Iron Moulder. By this time his family
had expanded to 7 children. The 1900 census also shows that his eldest son James, now aged 13, was working as a Meat
Market Clerk.
By 1910 James (working as a Moulder in a Switch works) and his family are still shown to be living in Stonycreek at 385
Moxham Road, Stonycreek, Pennsylvania. Edward his second eldest, aged 16, son was working as a Coalminer and his
third son Albert, aged 14, was working as an apprentice in a meat market while the remaining four children, (now
numbering 10, in total) were at school. This census also shows that James had paid off his mortgage on the house and
was now the sole owner.
In 1920 James was working in a Steel Mill as a Moulder. The census shows he was living in Diamond Street, Lorain
(near Johnstown), Cambria, Pennsylvania, with his wife Margaret and 3 of his children. One of the children, Albert, who
previously was working in a Meat Market, was now working as an electrician in the Steel Mill. We presume James sold
his house in Moxham Road and bought another in Diamond Street.

The last census in which we find James, was taken on 3 April 1930 when he had moved and bought a house in Green
Valley Street, Lorain, nr. Johnstown. The census shows us that the value of the house at that time was $2500 ($2,500.00
in 1930 had the same buying power as $33,372.24 i.e. approx £21,835 in 2013)
He stated he was employed as a Foreman in a warehouse but had not been working for 15 days. Margaret, his wife was
also living in the house but all his children had moved away by this time. Six days after this census was taken, on 9
April 1930, James died at the age of 69 and was buried in Richland Cemetery, Geistown, Cambria, Pennsylvania.
Although Margaret lived for a further 14 years after James' death we could not find her in the 1940 census in the USA.
What we do know is that she died, age 76, on 27 May 1944 (info as per Helfman & Eichensehr Family Tree in
Ancestry.com) and was buried beside her husband in Richland Cemetery, Geistown, Cambria.

James and Margaret had ten children as follows:
1) The eldest daughter Margaret Chapman Greig CRUICKSHANK was born on 29 July 1885 in Banff,
Banffshire, Scotland and married James Arthur Shaffer (b. 1882 Clearfield County, Pennsylvania) on 9
December 1903 in Johnstown, Cambria, Pennsylvania. James was the son of John W. Shaffer and
Wilhelmina Beatty or Garman. The 1920 census shows he worked as a locomotive Fireman in a Steel
Mill.
In 1930 Margaret was living in rented accommodation as Head of the house at 913 Fruit Ave., Farrell,
Mercer, Pennsylvania with her six children. At the time she was working as a dishwasher in a Cafeteria.
The census also shows that she was 18 when she married James Shaffer. There is no mention of James
during this census. Her children are shown as:
a. Blaine Shaffer (i.e. James Blaine Shaffer b. 29 March 1904 and d. 22 March 1982)
b. Margaret C. Shaffer (i.e. Margaret Cathryn Shaffer b. 21 March 1908 d. 23 April 1991) who
became a Public School Teacher
c. Grace Shaffer (i.e. Lilian Grace Shaffer b. 8 May 1912) who became a Telephone Company
Operator.

d. Gertrude Rose Shaffer, b. 9 July 1917 d. 17 July 1933
e. Robert Arthur Shaffer b. 1 September 1919 and died between 1989 and 1990)
By 1940 the census shows that both Margaret and James were still living in Fruit Avenue, Farrel. James
(shown as aged 60) does not seem to be employed but Margaret now aged 54 is working in the Co-op
Restaurant. In this census she states she was born in Pennsylvania and not Banff, Scotland! None of their
children are living with them.
James Arthur Shaffer died on 24 December1947 in Butler, Pennsylvania and Margaret died on 20 April
1966 in Sharon, Mercer County, Pennsylvania (as per Social Security Death Index)

2) James Wm. CRUICKSHANK was born on 27 April 1887 at 18 Carmelite Street, Banff, Scotland. He
married Kathran Peterson on 8 September 1906 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Kathran, the daughter of
Oliver Peterson and Elmira Weiner ,was born on 31 October 1889 Boswell, Pennsylvania. James, a
Moulder, worked for the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation in Johnstown.
In 1910 the couple, who now had one child, were living in an apartment at the rear of 554 Central Avenue,
Johnstown.
On 5 June 1917, Draft Enlistment for WW1 in Cambria County, Johnstown, shows James William
Cruickshank, aged 30, was of medium build, had grey eyes and light brown hair. He was a Steel Mill
Moulder.
By 1920 James had bought a house at 422 Ohio Street, Johnstown, Pennsylvania where their family had
expanded to two children and where James was still employed as a Moulder in a Steel Mill.
The USA census shows that both James and Catherine (Kathran) were living in the home in Ohio Street.
James was aged 52 and still working as a Moulder and Catherine was aged 50. At that time their son
Raymond, aged 28 and who was in the US Army, was visiting them but his usual residence was Virginia.
James' WW2 for 1942 draft papers show that he was aged 57 still living at 422 Ohio St., Lorain, Johnstown.
His description was given as being 5' 4" tall with a sallow complexion,
brown eyes and grey hair. He was widowed and his next of kin given as
his son Blaine Cruickshank of Bellmont Ave., Geistown, Johnstown.
On 3 Feb 1941, Catherine died and was buried on 6 February at Richland
Cemetery, Geistown, Cambria.
James lived for a further 22 years after Catherine's death, and died 6
December 1963 (as per Social Security Death Index)l. He was buried in
Richland Cemetery, Geistown, nr. Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Cruickshank, was born on 19 October 1922 but sadly died 5 days later on
24 October 1922. She was buried in Richland Cemetery, Geistown, nr.

3) George Dey CRUICKSHANK, third child of James William Cruickshank and Margaret
Dey, was born in Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland on 16 June 1889. On 2 April 1908
George married Verda Campbell.
The USA census for 1910 shows that both George and Verda were living in rented accommodation at 336
Wood Alley, Johnstown, Cambria, Pennsylvania. George was working in the Steel Mill as a labourer at
that time. The census also shows that they had one child, Janet Cruickshank aged 4 months.
George had WW1 draft papers but these are blanked out in Ancestry.com.
The 1915 US City Directory shows George working as a Baker living at 336 Wood Alley, Johnstown. With
him is his wife Verda.
In the US City Directory for 1925 we found Verda Cruickshank, a Clerk, in rented accommodation at 238
Bedford 4 w. Anna her youngest daughter is not listed and neither is her husband George!
In 1927 she appears to be working as a seamstress and living at 441 Franklin 5 w. Neither Janet, Anna nor
George are listed with her in this US Directory
In the "Find a Grave" website we found George buried in Richland Cemetery, Geistown, nr. Johnstown.
The stone gives a date of George's birth year as 1888 and should have been 1889 (as per copy of his original
birth certificate). George died on 25 October 1937.
We cannot find George, Verda or their children in the census returns for 1920, nor have we been able to find
a US Social Death Index for him.
In 1940 we find Verda, aged 49 in rented accommodation at Franklin Street, Johnstown, Pennsylvania. She
is working as a bushelman (i.e. a person who alters or repairs garments). Neither of her daughters is
residing there.
My conclusion is that perhaps George and Verda split up at some point after the birth of their daughter Anna
in 1918.
We have been unable to trace the death of Verda.

she married David Edw. Layton (b.1883), a Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman from 1900 to 1903

Flemming Layton, a Blacksmith/Post Master and Isabel Morrison. David Fred Layton ran his own farm in

worked for SaskPower and at the age of 18 was killed in a traffic accident just outside Regina on 23rd

5) Edward Abraham CRUICKSHANK fifth child of James Wm. and Margaret Cruickshank was born 4 Fe b
1893 in Johnstown, Cambria, Pennsylvania. Edward worked as an Electrician for Bethlehem Steel Co.
Johnstown.
On 23 June 1914 he married Nettie May Kimmel Rowe in Johnstown. Nettie was born on 5 June 1893 in
Johnstown.
Edward's WW1 draft papers for 6 May 1917 show him as being of medium build with blue eyes and light hair.
He is shown to be married with children.
The census returns for 1920 shows that Edward, Nettie and 3 children were living in rented accommodation at
419 Forest Avenue, Johnstown.
The returns for 1930 shows Edward and his family (now expanded to 8 children) living at 488 Clair Street,
Lorain, Johnstown and in 1940 the family were still living there and now with 9 children.
His WW 2 draft papers for 26 April 1942, describe him as being aged 48, 5' 7" tall with brown eyes, black hair
(note this description differs somewhat from the WW1 draft papers!) and a ruddy complexion. At that time he
gave his next of kin as Nettie Cruickshank and they were living at 391 Ohio Street, Lorain Boro, Johnstown,
Cambria. He was working as an electrician for the Bethlehem Steel Company in Johnstown.
Nettie died 2 August 1960, aged 67, and was buried in Richland Cemetery, Geistown, Johnstown, Pennsylvania
and Edward died at the age of 90 on 29 January 1985 in Johnstown and presumably he too was buried in
Richland Cemetery.

WW1 draft papers on 5 June 1917 show Albert as a motor repairman for Cambria Steel Co. in Johnstown. He is
of medium build with blue eyes and brown hair. Albert was a private in the army from 30 April 1918 to 25 April
1919.
On 8 August 1921 Edward married Ann Marie Novisher who was born 1891 in Pennsylvania. Ann was the
daughter of German immigrant parents, Chris (a coalminer) & Gottliebie Novisher)
Albert's WW2 draft card shows Albert living in Lorain Bore, Johnstown, aged 45. Next of kin was Mrs. Ann
Marie Cruickshank of same address. Albert worked for the Bethlehem Steel Co. Johnstown.
His physical description shows height 5'5", hazel coloured eyes and brown hair (this differs somewhat from his
WW1 physical description!). His right index finger was missing.
The US City Directory for 1989 shows both Albert, an Electrician and Ann living at 309 Diamond, Lorain,
Johnstown.
Albert died on 3 March 1962 and according to the Pennsylvania Veterans Burial Card, was buried in Section E,
Lot No. 77 at Richland Cemetery, Geistown, nr. Johnstown. Ann Marie (his wife) died 9 May 1968 and was
buried in Richland Cemetery.
Albert and Ann had one known child:
a) Albert Charles Cruickshank born 27 Aug 1923 Johnstown, and died 14 Dec 2003 Johnstown and
buried in Richland Cemetery, Geistown, nr. Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
Albert was a soldier during WW2 (Enlisted 15 Feb 1943 - TEC 4 US Army) and served as a
private.
Albert married Betty Lou (surname unknown) and had a child Diane Lee Cruickshank b. 1941

7) Helen Isabel CRUICKSHANK, seventh child of James Wm. and Margaret Cruickshank was born 9 January
1899 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. On 17 July 1917 in Johnston, Helen Harry Isenberg Slack a Steel Mill
Craneman. Harry was born on 9 January 1899 at Altoona, Blair, Pennsylvania to Franklin Slack and Rebecca
Tennis. The WW1 draft papers dated 2nd June 1917 for Harry describe him as medium build with blue eyes and
black hair and he was working as a Steam Fitter for City Spring Works in Johnstown.
The census for 1920 shows that Harry, Helen and one child, Betty (aged 10 months) were living in Diamond
Street, Lorain, nr. Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Harry is working as a Craneman in a Steel Mill. By 1940 the
family had moved to Oakland Ave., Lorain and the family had expanded to three children. Harry's occupation
at this time is given as a Motor Inspector and his daughter Betty was a student nurse in a hospital.
His WW2 draft papers describe Harry (age 46) as being of a ruddy complexion, 5' 6" tall with blue eyes and
brown hair. His residence is given as Lorain and person to contact in case of death, was his brother in law,
Albert Cruickshank.
The US City Directory for 1957 shows Harry, Helen and daughter Betty living at 348 Oakland Avenue, Lorain,
Johnstown. Harry's occupation is given as an Electrician.
Helen Isabel Slack (nee Cruickshank) died 17 Dec 1957 and Harry died in September 1960.
Both Helen and Harry had three children:
a) Betty H. Slack born 6 March 1919 and died 12 Sep 2006
Betty married Robert Swaney who was born 24 Nov 1915 and died 1 Aug 2007.
b) Robert John Harry (known as Jack) Slack was born 10 Nov 1925 and
married Joyce Evelyn Luther who was born 15 Jan 1930 and died 31 July 1998
c) Nancy J. Slack was born 12 Jan 1937 and married Donald Gregory who was
born 8 May 1934.
8) Grace Evelyn CRUICKSHANK, the eighth child of James Wm. and Margaret Cruickshank was born 24
February 1901 in Johnstown. On 29 June 1920 she married Harlow Samuel Purdy in St. John's Episcopal
Church, Youngstown, Ohio. Grace worked as a Telephonist.
The WW1 draft papers for 5 June 1917 for Harlow describes him as being slender, tall, grey eyes and brown hair.
At some point after the birth of their second child Betty Jean Purdy, Grace and Harlow divorced.
Grace and Harlow had 3 children:
a) Violet Purdy born 1922, James Walter Purdy born 1923.
b) James Walter Purdy was born 12 June 1923 and married Donna Jean
Wentling (born 1927 Canton, Ohio) in circa 1947 but the marriage was dissolved
on 18 September 1975. Donna went on to marry for a second time in 1976.
James W. Purdy died on 10 October 1990 in Portage, Ohio.
c) Betty Jean Purdy born 1928.
In 1946 in Youngstown, OH, Grace married George C. Moore, a Salesman.
George was born on 21 March 1888 and died July 4 July 1961 and was buried in Riverview Cemetery, East
Liverpool, Columbiana County, Ohio.
Grace died, aged 65, on 15 March 1966 and was buried on 17 March 1966 in Youngstown, Ohio.
9) Emily Gertrude CRUICKSHANK the ninth child of James Wm. and Margaret Cruickshank was born 2 May
1903 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The census for 1920 shows that Emily worked as a Store Packer. On 12
April 1923 at Cumberland, Allegany, Maryland, USA Grace married Walter Eichensehr who was born 26
January 1900 and the son of Henry Eichensehr and Grace Munzer. Walter worked as a motor mechanic.
In 1930 both Walter, Emily and two children, Walter and Robert, lived in their own house at 3611 West Chestnut
Avenue, Altoona, Blair, Pennsylvania. Robert was working as a mechanic at the time.
On 23 October 1972 at the age of 72, Walter died in Huntingdon, Blair, Pennsylvania and Emily, aged 95, died
on 27 May 1998 also in Huntingdon.

10) Ann Alverda CRUICKSHANK the tenth child of James Wm. and Margaret Cruickshank was born 23
February 1908 in Pennsylvania. In 1927 Ann married Kenneth Joseph Corle, a labourer in a Steel Mill, born 13
February 1908 in Pennsylvania. Kenneth was the son of Jesse Corle and Mary.
On the 6 January 1928 the couple had a baby girl named Shirley Ann who was either stillborn or died the same
day she was born.
In 1930 Kenneth and Ann together with their daughter Joanna(sic) were living in rented accommodation at 414
Ohio Street, Lorain, nr. Johnstown, Pennsylvania but by 1940 they had moved to rented accommodation at 657
Cypress Avenue, Johnston, Pennsylvania. Kenneth was now working as a Marker for a Steel Company and his
family had expanded to three more children. Their eldest daughter Joan was not present during this census.
The US City directory shows they were still living at this address in 1953.
Kenneth died on 27 June 1978 in Johnstown at the age of 70 and was buried in Richland Cemetery, Geistown, nr.
Johnstown. Ann Alverda died on 6 June 2002 in Johnstown and was also buried in Richland Cemetery.

Daniel Edgar Couchneour on 26 June 1959. Daniel was born 16 Sept 1938 in
Pennyslvania.
e) Jerry Martin Corle - born 25 December 1943 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.
37. Margaret CRUICKSHANK, the third child of George Andrew CRUICKSHANK and Margaret GREIG, was born on 24
August 1863 in Reid Street, Banff, Banffshire.
The 1881 census shows Margaret Cruickshank, General Domestic Servant, age 17, b. Banff, Banffshire, living and employed
by John Stewart, Station Master at Cathcart, Renfrewshire, and his family.
Margaret married John Mills, born 1862, Airdrie, Lanark, Lanarkshire on 18 September 1884 at 92 Gloucester Street,

son William (age 16) was working as an Apprentice Boilermaker and their second eldest George working as an apprentice
Smith. Husband John Mills was not present in the household during this census.

In 1911 John, Margaret (both aged 51) were living at 47 Hamilton Street, Elder Park, Govan, Glasgow with their children
David, Emily, Maggie, James and Hugh. John is working as a boiler maker in a shipyard (probably Govan shipyards) while
David (age 18) is working as an assistant ship plate riveter.
John Mills died, age 75, on 7 January 1936 at the Southern General Hospital, Glasgow from acute intestinal obstruction. Death
informant was his son William who was living at 12 Cairbairn Street, Glasgow (as per copy of original death certificate).
A few months later, Margaret Mills (nee Cruickshank) died on 13 May 1936 at the Southern General Hospital from
bronchopneumonia. Again the death informant was her son William of 12 Cairbairn Street, Glasgow (as per copy of original
death certificate).

38. Mary CRUICKSHANK, 4th child of George Andrew CRUICKSHANK and Margaret GREIG, was born on 4 November
1865 in Reid Street. Mary worked as a General Domestic Servant.
Mary married Alexander MILTON on 16 August 1889 in Banff when she was 22. Alexander MILTON was born in 1867 in
Banff and worked as a Labourer.

After their marriage it would appear that both Alexander and Mary moved to Hartlepool, England around 1890. We find
them in the 1891 census living 17 Dene Cottages, Fulwell, Durham, England where John was working as a general labourer.
This census also shows that he and Mary now have one child, George Alexander Milton, aged 1 who was born in Hartlepool,
England (April - June) 1890. In 1892 (October - December) their second child Annie Cruickshank Milton was born in
Durham.
Both Alexander and Mary with their two children moved back to Scotland between 1892 and 1901. The 1901 the census shows
that Mary was working as a Washerwoman and living at 33 Robert Street, Govan, Glasgow with her children George

The last census we find the couple is during the 1911 census where Alexander, Mary and their children Maggie (a Rope Work
Spinner), Andrew (a Machine boy), James, John, Peter, Charlie and Phillip were living at 4 Crossloan Road, Craigton, Govan,
Glasgow.
Mary died of Cerebral Haemorrhage on 14 July 1943 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire aged 78. Her address at the time was 4
Crossloan Road, Glasgow. Death informant was her son John Milton of 54 Holmfauldhead Dr., Glasgow, SW1
We have been unable to find a death record for Alexander Milton.
39. Emily Josephine CRUICKSHANK, 5th child of George Andrew CRUICKSHANK and Margaret GREIG, was born on
16 September 1867 in Reid Street.

Emily married three times - Henry Redding, Edward F. Allen and John Henderson.
Emily emigrated to Canada circa 1891 possibly with Henry Redding. Their first child Christina May
(Maisie) Redding was born there in 1894 (Refer to the Glass Bibliography for Maisie's marriage,
children and further information)and who married Benjamin Franklin Glass.
Henry disappeared to the Yukon leaving Emily to bring up Maisie on her own but in 1895 she met and
married Edward F. Allen an ex Canadian Mounded Policeman (Refer to the Allen Bibliography for
their story and life). She had three children by Edward - George Edward Allen, James Frederick Allen,
Emily Allen and Violet Winifred Allen.
After the death of Ed. Allen, Emily married again circa 1906 - to John James Henderson, a Farmer with whom she had a
further three children - Archibald John Henderson, Annie Emiline Henderson, and Gordon C. Henderson

Moose Jaw Cemetery. Emily was Edward's second wife - his first wife was Alice Mary Thompson (born
1857 died 1895) with whom he had two children Claire Effie Allen born 18/7/1881 and William Alfred
Allen born 26/6/1885. Emily married Ed Allen in 1895 at possibly Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

40. Jane CRUICKSHANK, (also known as Jeannie) 6th child of George Andrew CRUICKSHANK and Margaret GREIG,
was born on 13 May 1870 in 15 Old Market Place, Banff, Banffshire.
In 1883 when Jane was 13 years old, her mother died; Jane's eldest siblings were working away from home at the time,
leaving Jane and George in the care of an elderly aunt who was a dressmaker. The only person who fits in with this
occupational profile is Jane Cruickshank who married Alexander Greig (Jane and George’s maternal uncle) and were living
in MacDuff near Banff. When alive, Jane told her daughter that she did not get with her elderly aunt and was extremely
unhappy. It is possible that for this reason, and between the years 1881 to 1891, Jane ran off to Glasgow where her sister
Margaret was already working. The 1891 census shows that Jane found work as a domestic servant, working for the
Gilmour family at 188 South Ave, Stanley House, Bean Park, Govan.
In 1893 Jane became pregnant and gave birth to Annie McArthur Cruickshank at 31 Alma Street,
Glasgow. The name of the father is not shown on Annie’s birth certificate. When Annie was still a
toddler, she was sent to Bridge of Weir orphanage to be looked after. Presumably because Jane
could not cope with looking after her illegitimate child Annie.
By April 1897 we find that Jane had another child, George Cruickshank at 230 Thistle Street,
Glasgow. George’s birth certificate shows that he was also illegitimate and the father is not named.
However, it is almost certain that young George was named
after his father George Morin, an Irish widower. George
Morin and Jane were probably living together as an unmarried couple at the time.
George MORIN, son of Thomas MORAN OR MORIN (1836-1906) and Elizabeth
(Eliza) Ann WILSON (1835?-bef1901) - her second marriage (1st marriage was to a
Mr. Hutcheson), was born on 4 February 1866 in Magherafelt, Londonderry, Ireland.

In 1882 he left Desertmartin and moved to Glasgow where, in 1894 at the age of 18 he
married his first wife Sarah Kernohan, aged 20. At that time, George was employed
as a Glasgow Policeman. Tragically just four months after their marriage Sarah died
from kidney failure.
Two years after the death of Sarah, George was dismissed from the Glasgow Police in
August 1896 as a result of being drunk whilst on duty (and not for the first time!).
Sometime around 1897, Jane met George and had six illegitimate children by him (in
all the children's birth certificates, their surnames are given as Cruickshank with no
father's name mentioned but we are almost certain this was George Morin). It was
not until just before their last child, William Burns Morin, was born that Jane and
George married by declaration on 17 January 1914 at 19 Howard Street, Glasgow (as per copy of marriage certificate). After
their marriage all the surnames of the children were changed to Morin except that of Annie (Jane's first illegitimate child).
The 1901 census shows that both Jane and George were living together as man and wife at 163 Wolseley Street, Glasgow with
three of Jane's illegitimate children, Annie, George and Margaret. George Morin was working as a foundry labourer.
We have been unable to find any of the Cruickshank or Morin family during the 1911 census either in Glasgow or elsewhere.
George died on 1 June 1938, aged 72, in Victoria Infirmary Glasgow - Myocardial Degeneration. Usual residence was 50
Boyd St. Glasgow prior to death. His occupation was given as a Soap Factory Labourer and the death informant was Jane
Morin, his Widow (as per copy of death certificate).
Jane died on 4 April 1946, aged 71, at 50 Boyd Street (her home), from Chronic Cardiac Failure, Arteriosclerosis, Senility.
The death informant was her son George Morin of 38 Craigie Street Glasgow (as per copy of death certificate).
The following were all born illegitimately to Jane Cruickshanks, who ultimately married George Morin. All the
children below adopted the name of "Morin" as can be seen on various marriage and death certificates.
76 Annie MacArthur CRUICKSHANK (1893-1980) - father unknown
Annie was born illegitimately on16 Nov 1893 at 31 Alma St., Govan, Glasgow. She ultimately
worked as the Manageress of a Furrier shop for a Mr. Solanski, in Gorbals, Glasgow.

George was born on 21 April 1897 at 230 Thistle Street, Glasgow. He became a Storeman with
Wills Tobacco Factory. On 15 July 1927 he married Euphemia Stewart in the Wheatsheaf
Rooms, Glasgow. George died aged 51, on 13 April 1949 Victoria Infirmary, Glasgow but his
home address at the time was 38 Craigie Street, Glasgow. Euphemia his wife, was born 1897,
Govan, Glasgow and died in 1990 at Eastwood, Renfrewshire.
78 Margaret (Maggie) Bunten CRUICKSHANK or MORIN (1899-1974)
Maggie was born 16 August 1899 at 480 Rutherglen Road, Glasgow (father probably George
Morin). For some strange reason, Margaret's birth was registered twice. First on 8 Sept 1899 in
Hutchesontown, Glasgow and second on the 1st Aug. 1900 in Partick Glasgow
Maggie was a Boot Factory Worker/Biscuit Packer. She married John Crerar (1892-1963) a
Grocery Salesman on 17 September 1928 in the United Free Church, Oatlands, Glasgow.
They had two children:
Sarah Bain Crerar and Jean Cruickshank Crerar
Margaret (Maggie) died on 18 Nov 1974 at Park Circus, Glasgow, Lanarkshire and her husband
John Crerar born 2 January 1892, Glasgow died on 22 May 1963 in Largs, Ayrshire.
79 Robert (Bobbie) CRUICKSHANK or MORIN (1902-1956) (father probably George Morin). Robert was born on 6 March 1902 at 20 Thistle Street, Glasgow. He was a Van Driver who
married Elizabeth Hill Robertson on 26 Jan 1934 in the St. Mungo Halls, Glasgow . Robert
(Bobbie) died on 24 March 1956 at Gartloch Hospital, Glasgow from heart disease and left leg
amputation complications. His death informant was his brother Thomas Morin of 3 Kennaway
Dr., Glasgow.
Elizabeth Hill Robertson, his wife, was born 1911 and died from cancer on 14 May 1951 in
Hairmyres Hospital, Lanarkshire.
The were no children born to this couple.
80 Thomas (Tommy) CRUICKSHANK or MORIN (1904-1972) (father probably George Morin). Tommy was born 1 June 1904 at 21 Wolseley St., Glasgow and married Isabella McKay
McLeod on 12 July 1934. Tommy worked as a Storeman in a Confectionery business.
Tommy died in 1972 from a Thrombosis and his wife Isabella died in 1968, Glasgow.
They had one known child - George Morin born 1935.
81 John (Johnny) CRUICKSHANK or MORIN (1908-1979) (father probably George Morin). Johnny was born 10 March 1908 at 163 Sandyfaulds St., Glasgow and became a Grocer who
married Agnes Milton Newlands in 1938, Glasgow.
Johnny died in 1979 in Irvine, Ayrshire and his wife Agnes died 1960 in Glasgow.
Johnny and Agnes had three known children - Helen, Kenneth and Ian Morin.

82 James (Jimmy) CRUICKSHANK or MORIN (1910-1972) (father probably George Morin). Jimmy was born 24 August 1910 Hutchestown, Glasgow. On 13 April 1937 Jimmy married
Catherine Stevenson Thomson (born 1918) in Tradeston, Glasgow.
Jimmy died in 1972 Glasgow from renal failure and Catherine his wife died in 2009, Rutherglen,
Lanarkshire.
Catherine and Jimmy had one known child - Jean Thomson Morin born 1939.
83 William (Billy) Burns MORIN (1914-1992) father George Morin.
Billy was born on 1 November 1914 in Hutchestown, Glasgow.
Circa 1941 Billy married Jamesina Turner (circa b.1914). Billy died on 3 April 1992 in
Glasgow.
Billy and Jamesina had two known children - Janette Morin and George Morin
The Cruickshank / Morin Family
41. George CRUICKSHANK, 7th child of George Andrew CRUICKSHANK and Margaret GREIG, was born on 28 July
1872 in Old Market Place, Banff, Banffshire. From family stories we are told that after George's mother died in 1883, he was
extremely unhappy living with an elderly aunt and as a result ran away from home and ended up in the USA. In the 1930
USA census when George was living with his son George jnr. The 1930 census shows that George emigrated to America in
1887 (he would have been about 15 years old at the time which seems to fit with the story told by family members). Up until
her death his sister Jane or Jeannie always believed her brother George had died en route to America. George had apparently
severed all contacts with his family in Scotland and never contacted his siblings who had emigrated to Canada and
Pennsylvania.
After his emigration to the USA George settled down and lived in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. George was a Bakery owner in
Fitchburg, USA, then Shirt Factory Foreman.
In 1894 George married Rose D. Laventure who was born in Massachusetts in 1873. Her parents, Louis Laventure and Rose
or Mary Gariepy [Guarripe] were French Canadians.
The USA census returns for 1910 reveals that George was a bakery owner living at 25 East Street, Fitchburg. Subsequent
census records reveal that he changed his job and went to work as a box maker in a shirt factory and in 1930 and then became
a Foreman in the factory. At the time he was living with his son Harold and daughter in law Lucille at 59 Pleasant Avenue,
Leominster, Massachusetts. We can only assume that he went out of business with his bakery.

Rose died sometime between 1920 and 1930 and is possibly buried in Fitchburg. George died on 1 January 1952 and was
buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Leominster, Fitchburg alongside that of his son Harold and his daughter in law Lucille. His
granddaughter, Lois Holden [nee Cruickshank] remembers him as rather a sad person, never mentioning his family in
Scotland.
George and Rose had one child -
i. Harold Leon Cruickshank who was born on 11 August 1895. Harold's WW1 enlistment papers describes
him as being tall and stout with grey eyes and light coloured hair working as a Baker in the Cruickshank
Bakery in Fitchburg [presumably his father's bakery]. His WW2 registration card then shows him as
being aged 46 working for Simonds Saw & Steel Co., Interval Road, Fitchburg (this company produced
saws, chisels, knives etc).
Harold married Lucille Blanchard on 1 January 1918 in Fitchburg, after having served in the US Army
during WW1.
He died in 24 September 1964 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Leominster, Worcester, USA. His
wife Lucille died in 1977 and is also buried in this cemetery.
OBITUARY IN FITCHBURG SENTINEL FOR HAROLD LEON CRUICKSHANK
24 SEPTEMBER 1964 SHOWS:
"LEOMINSTER - Harold L. Cruickshank, age 69 of 18 Pleasant Ave., died this morning at Leominster Hospital.
Born in Leominster, he was a lifelong resident. He served during WW1 in the army and was stationed overseas for
nine months. Mr. Cruickshank was a retired guard at the Simonds Saw and Steel Co., Fitchburg, and was a member
of Highland Baptist Church, Fitchburg; Simonds Recreation Club and the Simonds Veterans' Club.
Survivors are his widow Mrs. Lucille H. [Blanchard] Cruickshank and a daughter, Mrs. Lois A. Wilson of
Leominster.
The funeral will be held at the Richardson Funeral Home Saturday at 2 pm. Burial will be in Evergreen
Cemetery."
Lucille Blanchard (Harold's wife) died at the age of 75 on 27 July 1977 at
Fitchburg and she too is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
They had a daughter Lois Ann CRUCKSHANK born 3 October 1939 and died in
Fitchburg in 9 August 1999 at the age of 59. She is buried in the same grave as
her parents and grandfather.
Lois married twice - her second husband was Paul Holden born 31 August 1922
and died 7 March 1995 in Bedford, Massachusetts
