Dear Reader,
Currently in campus no two words evoke more dread and excitement than a business quiz that is
conducted every week. Despite what any might think, anyone can drastically improve their quizzing
abilities. Scientific evidence shows that taking a quiz or test enhances learning and slows the
forgetting curve. Researchers think they know one reason why; students who take quizzes seem to
think up better ways of remembering than students who simply study.
The abstract from Canadian Journal of Learning and Technology on Optional Online Quizzes:
College student use and Relationship to Achievement by Genevieve Marie Johnson states that
frequent in-class quizzes have been associated with positive learning outcomes including increased
student achievement, attendance, and confidence (Ruscio,2001; Wilder, Flood, & Stomsnes, 2001).
Frequent quizzing reportedly maintains student study effort and promotes course engagement
(Smith et al., 2000; Sporer, 2001). Practice tests help students evaluate their learning and focus study
effort accordingly (Maki, 1998).
As per John Kleeman,unfortunately the retrieval practice benefit of quizzes helps more in the long
term than the short term. So there is a paradox that if you take a quiz or test you might feel it’s not
helping when it is. This can be a challenge. Part of the answer is to make quizzes enjoyable and part
is to educate learners on the benefits of retrieval practice.
There are a few suggestions to become better at quizzing. Try and find out the rounds and
orientation of the quiz and the quizmaster before the quiz. In this manner one can narrow down the
area to be studied and the chances to crack the answers more. A quiz master usually chooses the
questions that can be worked out with little intelligent guessing with clues that are consciously
interwoven into the question.
Second, first instincts to answer a quiz question may not always be right. This means that if, it is
not a rapid fire round, and one should pause and think it over before answering. Third, constantly
be on the watch out to absorb facts and figures. Learning has to be a constant. Memorization
techniques such as mnemonic devices are a technique often used by students to aid in recall. A
mnemonic is simply a way to remember information. For example, you might associate a term you
need to remember with a common item that you are very familiar with. The best mnemonics are
those that utilize positive imagery, humor or novelty. You might come up with a rhyme, song or joke
to help remember a specific segment of information. Teach new concepts to your friend, visualize
concepts to improve memory and recall, pay extra attention to difficult piece of information.
Practice the art of chunking, the art that breaks down huge pieces of information to small sized easy
to learn chunks. After all the camaraderie, bonhomie and learning that happen in a quiz
is its reward in itself.

Hope you all are taking precautions to escape from this summer temperature and don’t
miss out your holidays, because in our busy lives we get hardly 10 or 20 holidays in
summer. So, go and spend your valuable and beautiful time with your family and friends
and cherish the moments – time will never come again if we miss it.
We are happy to announce to all our readers that our next magazine is going to
release on June 5th – on behalf of our first annual celebrations.

I LOVE CRUCIBLES
"You never leave something behind; you take a part of it with you and leave a part of yourself
behind."
Being one of the initial members of Crucibles has made this group a very intimate one to me. It all
started as a brief idea which grew to become one big family. But this family was really different; it
welcomed all new members with glee. Together we have had ups and downs but the initial lively spirit
remained. I still remember times when there were lots of things undone but we left no stone unturned
and eventually succeeded in making Crucibles a club to stay in IIPM.
Further, being a part of Crucibles was a new learning experience in itself and I had a real close bond
with the seniors and juniors of the college. Well, I must not be using the term senior or junior because
in Crucibles there is no such thing like this which creates discrimination. We have always been
together and lifted each other when the situation demanded because we were raised in Crucibles in
such a way.
There goes a very famous saying that if you break a single stick, it easily breaks. On the other hand,
if you tie together a bunch of sticks and try breaking them, they won‟t break o easily. This example is
one of the many such characteristics of Crucibles, because as an individual we may be weak but once
we come together, we uplift each other in such a way that no one can break us.
Finally, being a part of Crucibles has taught me many things and I will surely remember these
wonderful memories in my future. I may be graduating from IIPM but would never be apart from this
group. There would be a part of Crucibles always with me and I am leaving a part of myself with
Crucibles too.

Here am i once again with a typical title for my posted article – “barketing is not the right marketing”. What
do i mean by this and what is barketing? Further, how is this term related to marketing? These are many such
questions which will be answered through this post today.
Barketing according to me is: “ a relationship between a dog‟s barking and the subject of marketing.”
Today‟s marketing strategies have
become more inclined towards a
Barketing approach which are
annoying, irritating and the
message is one sided. We see that
the customers are being
bombarded with so many not so
interesting messages about the
product and the service of a brand
through advertisements (both
indoor and outdoor). Just like a
dog which goes on barking for
seeking the attention of its
prospects (its guardians), many
companies are following the same
process in which they are
continuously talking about the
features of their products and
services to the customers by
means of advertisements and
promotional activities. Take the
example of the recently launched
series of advertisements of
Vodafone where a dog is used to
portray non-stop connectivity. It is
sometimes perceived as lame and
not too interesting.
Even so, this advertisement is
being continuously BARKETED
to the customers. We can further
see that Vodafone is not the only
one; almost all of the other
companies/brands are continuously
advertising the same old stories.
People have got bored with
Cadbury‟s Kuch meetha hojaye,
because chocolates can never replace
sweets in the Indian Traditional
Cuisine (of course it did change the
type of gifts given on the festival of
Rakhi) but it still cannot be accepted
for festivals like Deepavali and Holi.
Therefore there has to be a proper
balance between the advertisements,
the culture and the frequency of such
advertisements. That‟s where I say,
“Barketing is not the right
Marketing”. Therefore as a marketer
should think – “Are we marketing
or we just barketing?”
If the competition is Barketing, you
should opt for a “Meow” approach.
When all the other dogs in the pack
are barking, trying to bark louder will
only get you noticed for the wrong
things. When everyone else is
barking you need to do something
other than bark. Perhaps you should
"meow".
Notice the differences between the
TV ads that you don't skip and the
ones that bore or annoy you. Make
note of those differences and apply
these techniques to your own
marketing research. Do the same
thing as you flip through a
magazine or peruse through your
mail. Remember that Marketing is
practical, it cannot be learnt from
books.

They say “Expect the unexpected rather than the
other way around”. In case you‟re guessing as to
what I mean, let me brief you about the “Earn while
you learn” programme which I enrolled myself into
at Visakhapatnam. I worked in a Business Process
Outsourcing branch of the Hong Kong and Shanghai
Business Corporation‟s Global Resourcing Centre as
a Customer Service Executive(Trainee) besides
pursuing my Bachelor of Commerce in Andhra
University. I had to expect the unexpected because
my Dad told me of this opportunity. This happened
while I was looking out for a good graduation
course, especially after getting ranks in entrance
exams which one could equal to my landline
number. Well, rebels as we are, I was reluctant but
joined anyway.
It turned out to be a perfect blessing in disguise
because I slowly understood that this wasn‟t just
about the part of education that I was missing out
on(because it happened through correspondence) but
on the behemoth amount of corporate exposure that I
was going to get by staying on-board. Hence, I‟ve
named the topic so because I started working even
before I became a major and have a huge advantage
now over friends/students who complete their
graduation and then start working(no offence
though). This experience I‟ve obtained has gone
such a long way that, in a way has made people
respect me though I don‟t deserve it and it shows
why people in the West move out from their homes
to start living independent lives, helping them
encounter the slap-in-the-face realities of life. I‟ve
learnt many things like being on time, following the
boss‟ orders, achieving daily and monthly targets,
time management, self-development, politics, appraisals
etc., which have gone a long way in even moulding my
character and seeing the world through a whole new
perspective.
The takeaways from this experience(this is the best part)
that I would like to share with you are that it is important to
practise what you learn simultaneously, something which is
lacking in the Indian context today. Keep learning
something every day. Get out of your shell/lazy self and
start being on time and thus proving to be an effective
example. Do not worry if your team member gets ahead of
you. As is said in the corporate world
“Every dog has its day” and better performance/work will
result in more work. Different people have different views
and one should respect the other for that. Finally the theme
on which we at HSBC used to work is “Work hard and party
harder”. Whatever you do, have fun while doing it. There‟s
nothing better that that.

To communicate effectively, one needs to know the communicate as well as one self. To understand oneself and
others effectively, one needs to harmers one‟s minds‟ potential. How can you control your feeling to beneficially
influence how you communicate? First, you need to understand that you have a mind with a capacity for
superconscious thinking – or thinking about thinking, that can be developed. Second, you can become much more
efficient in thinking about your thinking if you view your mental processes in terms of skills that you can train yourself
to control. Third in daily life you can consciously practice using your minds‟ skills to influence our communication.
There is various descriptions of mental processes. For our purpose we shall discuss six central mental process or mind
skills. These skills are derived from the work of leading cognitive therapists such as Aaron Back and Albert Ellis.
These skills are relevant for changing thinking for effective communication.
SKILL I CREATING SELF-TALK
The mind is constantly working. Those trained in
meditation technique may be successful in quieting the
mind. For most of us thinking about nothing is very
difficult, there is always a constant stream of intrusive
verbalization such as, self-talk inner monologue, inner
dialogue, inner speech, self-instruction and so on.
There are usually two strings of conversation going on
simultaneously, our public conversation and our private
self-talk. For effective communication, we need to
focus on coping self-talk, that is instructing ourself so
that we may cope with learning specific
communication skills. Coping self-talk is not
preconscious, automatic or awareness, coping self-talk
enables us to focus, become clear about our goals, it
strengthens our self-support system and decreases our
SKILL 2: CREATING VISUAL IMAGES.
Self-oppression..We create for ourself an attainable
standard towards which we consciously strive.
Visual images are very important for communication.
Through the proper use of mental imagery, one can
achieve an immediate sense of self-confidence,
develop more energy and tap into one‟s own mind for
productive purposes. Positive use of mental imagery
can help us improve our communication skill, and
reduce our negative images which distort
communication. A well developed power of imagery
that is visualizing vividly can be developed. The more
we attach our thinking and feedings to our images, the
better you can use visualizing as a self helping skill in
communication.

SKILL 3: CREATING
PERCEPTIONS
One of the most influential approaches
to communication is testing perception
based on reality, that is, testing the
reality of our perceptions about ourself
and others by preferential and
propositional thinking-both are useful
mind skills.Testing our perception
about ourself is testing our self-
concept as well as positively and
negatively evaluating of ourself.
Positive self concept is central to
effective communication because
ourself concept determines how
confidently we communicate. A
negative self-concept creates barriers
in communication, by misinterpreting
meaning and intentions, we become
aggressive in the choice of words and
body language, feel threatened and we
become defensive in the process of
communications. On the other hand, if
we have a positive self-concept, we
tend to be more empathetic speaker
and listener, we perceive the other
person and the situation accurately,
our body language is confident and
relaxed. In short, it can be said the we
are not a pathological critic in the
process of communication.
SKILL 4: CREATING POSITIVE
EXPECTATIONS:
As human we seek to predict our future
so that we can influence and control it.
Similarly we create expectations about
the consequences of our communication
and actions. Positive Expectations
facilitates spontaneous communication,
whereas negative expectations creates
harmful anxiety, a feeling generated by
excessive preoccupation with
undesirable consequences, in the
process, we loose all spontaneity and
freeze ourself with indecision, we
become self-protective and tend to
defend our current estimation of our
ability which leads to denial of certain
aspects of the feedback that we receive
from others. Alternatively, we may
distort and selectively filter out
incoming information, for example,
only partly acknowledging the full
extent of a piece of positive or negative
feedback. We create expectations of
varying degrees of accuracy about our
competence and ability, such
expectations influence how confident
we feel and how we communicate.
SKILL 5: USE YOUR
EMOTIONAL
INTELLIGENCE:
Emotional intelligence facilitate
effective communication by
making us an empathetic speaker,
it helps us by making us use both
our rational and emotional
intelligence in communication,
that is we use our emotion in
being rational. The more we are
open to our significant feelings
and experiences, the more likely
we are to be rational. Emotional
Intelligence consists of five
domain: knowing oneself;
recognizing emotions; managing
emotion; motivating oneself,
recognizing emotions in others;
and handling relationships. All
these are important aspects of
communication. By using our
emotional intelligence we use
both emotion and intelligence to
effectively think and act in
communication.

SKILL 6: DEVELOP A
HUMANISTIC APPROACH IN
COMMUNICATION:
Supportive communication is a humanistic
approach to communication. Supportive
communication is communicatee centered,
here the value is place on the individual than
in the context, leading to enhanced
understanding, acceptance and adjustment
between the communicator and the
communicatee. Supportive communication is
reflective rather than evaluative. In situation
where there is cognitive, emotional and
cultural deficit, the communicator needs to
provide instrumental, emotional and appraisal
support to the communicatee. In a
dehumanized world, where our
communication pattern is reduced to skills
and context specific, supporting
communication talks about understanding the
person, reaching the heart, the head and then
the context. When we practice supportive
communication, we reduce communication
gaps, avoid defense mechanisms and
aggression in speech and manner, we strive
toward spiritual communication that is much
more purpose.

The World Bank is an international bank
based in Washington that lends money and other
help to developing nations for infrastructure. The
World Bank has the goal of reducing poverty.
Two Non Americans, Nigerian Ngozi Okonjo-
Iweala, the Finance Minister of Nigeria; and
Colombian Jose Antonio Ocampo, the director at
the Economic and Political Development
Concentration at the School of International and
Public Affairs, Columbia University competed
for the post of president of World Bank for the
first time alongside Korean-American Jim Yong
Kim, the president of Dartmouth College.
The selection of the president at the bank
however has been highly criticized because of
the fact that the World Bank President is always
a citizen of the United States, nominated by the
President of the United States.
An indirect presidential election was held on
16 April 2012 to select a new president of the
World Bank to replace Robert Zoellick, whose
term expires in June.
The 87th most powerful women on the Forbes
list, Ngozi Okonjo-Ideal (studied economics at
Harvard University, then earned a PhD in
regional economics and development from MIT)
was a managing director and the second-in-
command at the World Bank and was the finance
minister of Nigeria and was known for attacking
corruption and accelerating privatization and
liberalization, building close ties with the U.S.
and closer ties with prominent Nigerian
businessmen. Okonjo-Iweala's main achievement
was to secure a debt write-off of $18 billion from
Nigeria's creditors.
Speech: “I know what it means to go to the
stream to fetch water... What it means when
people are poor and don‟t have enough to eat. It‟s
not good enough to say you know about poverty.
You have to live it.”
“We need a Rolodex of experts who we can call
on very quickly. We need a Rolodex of experts

about a Nigerian... or an American [as president]”,
she said, with regard to the selection of the
president. “The issue is who brings the best skills
to bear.”
If she were to win the presidency, Okonjo-Iweala
would be a trailblazer, becoming not only the first
woman to head the bank, but also the first
president not put forth by the U.S.
Jose Antonio Ocampo is outstandingly well
suited for the job for three reasons; Firstly, he has
had a distinguished career in his own country,
where he was a highly successful and professional
Minister of three portfolios: Finance, Agriculture
and Planning.
Therefore he has a deep understanding of policy
challenges in developing and emerging countries.

Secondly, he has had an impressive
international career as an international civil servant at
the highest level. He was Executive Secretary of
ECLAC for five years, the UN Commission for Latin
America and the Caribbean; later he became Under-
Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs at
the UN for four years.
Thirdly, he is respected as one of the foremost
development economists in academia. He is a
Professor at Columbia University, where he works on
research about a wide range of development and
macroeconomic topics. He is held in high regard in
Yale University where he obtained his doctorate. He
has had close associations with different top
universities around the world including Oxford and
Cambridge as well as various ones in developing and
emerging countries.
Over 100 economists endorsed Jose Antonio
Ocampo for the World Bank president. They said that
„if the decision is finally based on merit, it should be,
Ocampo will win. He was far better than any on the
list of credible names‟.
Ocampo's native Colombia declined to endorse his
bid, however, and with limited backing he withdrew
from the race on 13 April 2012 and swung his support
behind Nigerian Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-
Iweala.
"It is clear that this is not based on the merits of the
candidates but is a political exercise," he said after the

Kim, who was born in Seoul, the South Korean capital,

52-year-old is a leading figure in global health and a
former director of the HIV / Aids department at the
world health organization.
Dr. Kim said that his goal as the chief of the apex bank
in the world was “spurring economic growth that
creates jobs.”
Many, however, felt that Jim Yong Kim‟s appointment
was inevitable (with the U.S.A holding over 16% of
the banks stack). The Obama administration would
almost certainly have withheld support for Lagarde's
appointment to the IMF if European nations had not
agreed in advance to support whoever was
Washington's candidate for the World Bank.
There was never really a contest. Some developing
countries probably figured this out and put up a strong
candidate to embarrass the west, hoping that this will
lead to a more open process in the future.
Don't bet on that. The west won't give up its hold
over these institutions until they need something from
the emerging markets.
Now all that‟s left to do is to wait and see how Dr.
Jim Yong Kim brings along the change in the world
economy.

Let me start this off by thanking Praveen
Paul who suggested this topic to me which
made me aware of where our Indian women
stand now.
The educated women do not want to limit their
lives within the four walls of their houses. When
I was a child I heard that women abroad have
equal rights when compared to men. However,
I‟ve come to know now that not only do women
abroad have equal rights, but our Indian women
are on path of success too, while demanding
equal rights to be at par with men. Women are
thus doing a wonderful job in striking an
effective work/life balance.
Here are the top few women entrepreneurs
in India:
INDRA NOOYI
Indian born American business woman Indra
Nooyi is the Chairperson and Chief Executive
Officer (CEO) of PepsiCo, one of the world‟s
leading food and beverage companies.
She has graduated
from Madras Christian
College (MCC) in
Chemistry, Physics and
Mathematics.
On the completion of her graduation she went to
the Indian Institute of Management at Calcutta
for doing her Masters in Finance and Marketing.
Indra Nooyi earned the coveted spot at
PepsiCo through her years of international
business experience. She started her career in
India as a Product Manager for Johnson &
Johnson as wells as textile firm Mettur
Beardsell, followed by spending six years at
The Boston Consulting Group as an
International Corporate Strategy Director.
Nooyi also worked for Motorola's Automotive
and Industrial Electronic Group, and later
became Senior Vice President of Strategy and
Strategic Marketing for Asea Brown Boveri, a
Swiss power and automation technologies
company.
Nooyi‟s key contributions include promoting
and supporting socially responsible business
practices, including taking on one of the
planet‟s most pressing problems, including
climate change. Her commitment to global
citizenship is evidenced by her multi‐year
growth strategy, ʺPerformance with Purposeʺ.
Nooyi was named on Wall Street Journal‟s list
of 50 women to watch in 2007 and 2008, and
was listed among Time‟s 100 Most Influential
People in The World in 2007 and 2008. Nooyi
has been named the 2009 CEO of the Year by
the Global Supply Chain Leaders Group
(GSCLG).

DR.KIRAN MAZUMDAR SHAW
Entrepreneur Dr. Kiran Mazumdar‐Shaw is
the Chairman & Managing Director of Biocon
Ltd. She was educated at the Bishop Cotton
Girls School and Mount Carmel College in
Bangalore.
She started her career as a trainee brewer at the
Carlton & United Beverages in 1974.
She collaborated with Biocon Biochemicals
Limited, Ireland, to found Biocon India in
1978. She founded Biocon India with a capital
investment of Rs.10,000 in her garage in 1978
‐ the initial operation was to extract an enzyme
from papaya.
Her application for loans was turned down by
banks.
Initially, she faced many problems, but she
was not the one to give up. Her firm has grown
to be the biggest biopharmaceutical firm in
India today.
EKTA KAPOOR
The Queen of telivision industry - Ekta
Kapoor is the daughter of former Bollywood
superstar Jeetendra. Ekta Kapoor did her
schooling from the Bombay Scottish School
and later on joined the Mithibai College. She
was not interested in academics and with the
advice of her father ventured into TV-serial
production at the age of 19. And soon she
changed the face of Indian television industry
and completely dominated it.
She studied zoology at

serials and each one is being shown, on an
average, four times a week on different
television channels.
Her production house has many hit serials to its

PRIYA PAUL
Priya Paul is a prominent woman
entrepreneur of India, and currently the
Chairperson of Appeejay The Park Hotels chain
of boutique hotels. She joined the company,
after finishing her studies in Economics at the
Wellesley College (US) and started working
under her father, as Marketing Manager at the
Park Hotel, Delhi, at the age of 22.
The Apeejay Surrendra Group has many
different subsidiaries such as hotels, tea
business, retail, shipping, financial services and
real estate.

Simone Tata is at present the Chairperson of the
Trent Limited. She is French by birth and was born
and brought up in Geneva, Switzerland and
graduated from the Geneva University in
Switzerland. Her first visit to India was in 1953 as a
tourist where she met Naval H. Tata. Their
introduction gradually turned into marriage in the
year 1955 and she settled down
SULAJJA FIRODIA MOTWANI
Sulajja Firodia Motwani is Joint Managing Director
of Kinetic Engineering Ltd; she is in charge of the
Company‟s overall business developmental
activities. She is also performing the role of the
Director of Kinetic Motor Company Limited and
Kinetic Marketing Services Limited. She made an
incredible contribution in taking the firm from
strength to strength. Prior to joining the Kinetic
Company, Sulajja worked for a period of four
years with a well known investment analytics
company, BARRA International, based in
California. She has been an active participant in
setting up the operations of the company in India.
She graduated from the Pune University.
Thereafter, she went to the United States for
pursuing her further studies. She is an MBA
degree holder from the reputed Carnegie Mellon
University at Pittsburgh.
She is an epitome of boldness and courage. With
her determination and courage, she has been able
to establish a niche for the firm in the business
world. The Company has witnessed tremendous
expansion during her tenure. From being a mere
moped manufacturer, today, it has set its foothold
in the industry as a manufacturer offering a
complete range of two wheelers right from
mopeds, scooters to motorcycles.
