Hello SWE CRS Community! I hope you are having a wonderful spring! As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers” and I think we are all looking forward to less rain and more sun so we can enjoy the flowers and spring! May is somewhat of a transitional month. It is a month of graduation where high schoolers and collegians culminate that chapter of their lives and look toward the next era with excitement. It is a month where the unofficial start of summer acts as a gateway to vacations, outdoor activities, and more time with family and friends. For SWE, May marks the last month of heavy activity before the end of the fiscal year and our election season. We have some professional development and outreach activities this month that culminate and incredible year of new relationships built, aspiring engineers reached, and inclusive opportunities provided. I encourage you to reach outside your comfort zone and talk to someone new or try something different. I am sure we all have a story about how reaching outside our comfort zone has led to something amazing. We are also holding SWE CRS Elections this month. Our amazing Nominating Committee Chair, Wendy Obenauf, has sent out election information to all members via email. I highly encourage you to take the time to review each candidate and vote in this year’s election for our FY18 executive board. More information about voting is included in this newsletter. This transitional month can be very exciting as it provides new opportunities to think about that next chapter in our lives. Please take the time to vote and enable the next leaders for our section, attend a different event and meet some new people, and be prepared for that transitional time whenever it may come. Have a wonderful May and I hope to see you at an event soon! Stephanie Salas-Snyder FY17 SWE Columbia River Section President

A big thank you to all participants and volunteers at SWE events in April. Outreach: Salt Water Powered Robot Demo

This event was held on April 25th Grant Watts Elementary School in Scappoose, and involved 27 3rd graders students, 17 girls, 10 boys. The purpose of the event was to encourage students to choose STEM fields.

The Salt-Powered Robot uses surprisingly simple ingredients to make an aluminum-air (oxygen) battery to operate a tiny electric motor on a small robot that you build. It takes only a few minutes to snap together the robot components and assemble the battery. After making a super saturated solution of salt and water, you draw a few drops into a pipette and squeeze them through the battery lid. Slide the battery into the battery holder and the robot zips across the floor.

Students mentioned to their teachers that this is their favorite activity of the year!!

SWE Region Update

At the Region conference held in February, there was a Region Meeting where your Regional representatives spoke about updates to SWE at the Society level. One of the changes that we wanted to alert our members to is the dissolution of the Regions. We still will have one more year with this current structure, but changes are happening already with all sections only having one regional representative in FY18 (we typically have one representative per 100 members), and through proposals of how to dissolve the Region funds. Proposals for using the funds were shared in this meeting, and the proposal with the most traction was to create a new scholarship at the Society level. This would be an option to utilize the majority of the funds, with certain, specific monies being directed to improvement of the ABJ training in the Fall (as certain dollars are earmarked for exact uses.). As these proposals gain traction and move through the steps of approval, we will give you an update on if/how this could impact you and our section as a whole. Thank you for your patience and continued support during this time of transition SWE Outreach in our community!

Professional Development: Boeing Portland Technical Tour On April 27th, the Professional Development committee hosted a technical tour of Boeing’s Portland location. Over 20 engineers toured the site, which serves as Boeing’s Center of Excellence for complex machining, gear systems, and flight controls. While on the tour, people were able to observe some of the largest profile milling machines in the world, a friction stir-weld demo of titanium, and view the benefits of using a laser scanning coordinate measuring machine to validate dimensions on large parts. Following the tour, people gathered at McMenamins Edgefield Black Rabbit bar for further networking. Many thanks to Ann Simmons for arranging the tour and the other women of Boeing who helped as tour guides! ***Many thanks to Ann Simmons and Kristen Brastad for organizing the tour!***
