Croydon is the biggest of the London boroughs with a large, diverse community. It's also a leading business, financial and cultural centre. It's somewhat surprising therefore that it lacks its own local radio station.

I believe there is a place for a dedicated radio station that caters for the news, views, issues and interests of local people. A radio station would give a voice to organisations and individuals. It would encourage a sense of civic pride and enthuse individuals to become more involved in their local communities. A radio station would boost Croydon’s image and provide a meaningful outlet for creativity and self-expression, particularly amongst the youth of Croydon and for those interested in radio and community. It could provide relevant and useful training opportunities in media and help build confidence.

Building a traditional AM/FM station is expensive and must be approved by OFCOM, the communications regulator. The rules are strict and it is an onerous responsibility on the license holder.

The advantages of internet radio

Page 5: Croydon Radio

Internet radio is not governed by the same rules as traditional radio. It’s also a mature, inexpensive and pervasive technology. An internet radio station is simple to set up and manage and easy for listeners to discover and connect to. Whist internet radio doesn’t have the ubiquity of traditional radio, its growing in popularity. Every traditional radio station sees the importance of having an online radio stream to increase reach and mobility. Wifi radios are increasing in popularity and many people are within reach of a wifi network, especially in the home.

Croydon Radio will broadcast 24x7 via the internet using a mixture of live shows and pre-recorded content. The programming will be geared to the local community and will consist of music, talk, news, information, advertising and event coverage. At the outset, Croydon Radio will have a limited number of presenters and limited live programming. Much of the output will be automated such as pre-programmed playlists and pre-recorded content. Over time, the number of presenters will increase and there will be more original content.

Croydon Radio will forge strong links within the Croydon community through participation in activities, promotion and fund raising for local causes. Having a physical presence in town would identify the station as a tangible part of Croydon, enabling anyone to participate and get hands on experience. A permanent location would allow us to offer work experience to local schools and provide radio production and advertising services for local businesses. It would be a place where presenters broadcast their shows and welcome guests and a location where we could offer training and professional services. Croydon Radio would be a hub and meeting place for those involved with the station.
