The “CROWN” Express train is set up exclusively of specialized cars and saloon-cars with various purposes. It provides to a limited number of passengers comfortably and pleasantly furnished interior and high-quality services rendered by a professional staff, for luxury, official, business, tourist, jubilee and entertainment tours and journeys.

The use of saloon-cars by the Bulgarian Railways began in 1866, when the first railway line between the towns of Rousse and Varna was put into operation. Since then the small number of saloon-cars have been permanently maintained and used for the so-called “Royal journeys” of monarchs and non-royal heads of state, as well as of the persons accompanying them.

In the course of ages, this specialized rolling stock has been replaced several times by more comfortable, modern and more perfect cars. Nowadays, Bulgarian State Railways operates a number of saloon-carriages, delivered from Germany during the period from 1938 to 1942, two pieces – built in Bulgaria respectively in 1958 and 1968 and several cars imported from East Germany (the ex- DDR) in 1975.

The first cars are particularly precious due to their furniture dating back to the pre-World War II epoch and for their perfect dynamic-rolling features, ensuring excellent comfort during the journey. Among them are the cars No. 50, No. 51 and No. 52 designed and intended for use at first by King Boris III, Queen Joanna and Prince Cyril.
