Dominoes: A Diamond in the Rough

The Jack Theatre Brockley London SE 4

From 15 – 18 February 2012

Dominoes was written by Catherine Connor and a group of students, three of whom were Crossways students, about a family recovering from the violent death of their son, that re-built their lives through playing the game of dominoes, and took it to the Olympic committee to be accepted as an Olympic sport. The three students were Bernadette Sancho, Olivia Osman and Abdi Kase, all studying AS Drama at Crossways.

It was performed at the Jack Theatre in February half-term to rave reviews. Four nights of sell-out performances made

it the ‘best show that the Jack Theatre has seen in years’ Karl Swinyard, manager of The Jack said afterwards. The mixture of a great storyline, appropriate to Lewisham audiences, a rocking soundtrack and raw performing talent by young student actors made it a ‘real night to remember’.

Everyone that saw it said it was ‘great’ and ‘when was the next one going to be?’

Well you’ll have to watch out for that because there will be another one – we’ve got £1,800 in the kitty!!

Crossways FC – SESSA Intermediate Cup Final

Crossways FC resurrected their season with an impressive

string of victories which led them to the SESSA

Intermediate Cup Final. A well-deserved achievement due

to their excellent commitment and effort demonstrated

both on and off the field throughout the season.

Our opponents, Regents College, had already defeated us

earlier in the league, so we were wary of the threat they

posed. A European group of players with an average age of

21, they exuded confidence and displayed a fluent

continental style of play. However, Crossways approached

the fixture fearlessly and confident that they could return

home with some silverware.

Unfortunately, Regents College managed to score a late

goal which determined the winners in an extremely tight

encounter which could have gone either way. The 24

degree heat was sapping the energy of the boys, but they

pressed for the full 90 minutes and were extremely

unlucky to lose the game 1-0, with Regents scoring in the

87th minute.

Once again, the team took the defeat with maturity and

represented themselves and Crossways extremely

positively. We left the stadium with our pride intact, and

proud of the achievements gained from our debut season

in the SESSA league. Daniel Searle, the Crossways FC

manager, said:

‘The boys have been absolutely phenomenal in all aspects

throughout the season, a pleasure to manage and a true

asset to the college. Their attitudes have been faultless,

and I sincerely hope they continue to endeavour to play

the game with the same level of dignity and commitment.’

Up the mighty Crossways FC!!

Maybe you’re feeling the pinch and are struggling to buy day to day things or perhaps you’re saving for a holiday or a special

occasion.

Either way a part time job is a great way to earn extra cash while working around your studies, making new friends and

enhancing your CV!

Take a look at the tips below on how to find some part time work:

· The Largest employers of students looking for part-time work are supermarkets, for

example Sainsbury’s, Tesco etc.

· These are followed by chain shops, such as Marks & Spencer, Boots etc.

· Try to start your job search in the morning, companies will be more receptive. And

remember that job searching is in itself a full time job! So an early start is required.

You’re doing yourself no favours waking up in the afternoon!

· Avoid going into a shop and asking for a job during their busiest time from 12-3pm.

· Always have a copy of your typed CV & Covering letter when job hunting. These

documents represent you skills and abilities, so make sure you have checked it for

spelling mistakes!

· Sports shops such as JD Sports, First Sport and Nike Town are very popular and competition is fierce, hence your chances of success are very small.

· Be aware that some shops e.g. GAP, Next expect a high level of customer service and you need to know about their company and products.

· Apart from shops consider Fast Food Restaurants, Sports/Theatre Venues, Sports Centres, Light Cleaning etc.

· If there are no vacancies, ask to leave your CV & Covering Letter on file for future jobs. Don’t be disheartened, as there are lots of other places to try.

· Don’t be disheartened if a company has not got back to you. Try to follow up your applications by giving them a call to find out whether you have been

successful or not.

· Job searching takes a lot of effort and planning, so be focused or get some help with your job search.

· If you have no success, consider voluntary work half day a week with Oxfam, Scope etc. These are will give you useful retail training and work experience.

Also look in Thursday’s Evening Standard newspaper.

REMEMBER: THE LRC IS OPEN

FOR ALL YOUR STUDY NEEDS

So how should I deal with exam stress?

Learn to recognise when you're stressing out. A break or a chat with someone

who knows the pressure you're under will get things into perspective.

Avoid comparing your abilities with your mates. Those "Oh my God I've only

read Macbeth 17 times" conversations are such a wind up. Everyone

approaches revision in different ways, so just make sure you've chosen the

method that works best for you. Make a realistic timetable. Stick to it.

Eat right. Treat yourself like a well honed machine. Fresh fruit and veg. Proper

breakfasts. No one can think straight on Coffee and Cornflakes.

Sleep well. Wind down before bed. Don't revise under the duvet - your bed is a

sanctuary not a desk. Get your 8 hours.

Exercise. Nothing de-stresses the mind faster than physical activity. Build it into

your timetable. Being a sloth makes your mind sloppy too.

Quit the bad habits. Cigarettes. Alcohol. Never stopped anyone being stressed

for long.

Panic is often triggered by hyperventilating (ie quick, shallow breaths). So if you

feel yourself losing it during the exam, sit back for a moment and control your

breathing. Deep breath in and out through the nose. Counting to five each way.

Steer clear of any exam 'post-mortem'. It doesn't matter what your mate wrote

for Question 3(b). It's too late to go back and change your answers, so it will just

make you worry even more.

Ultimately, don't lose sight of the fact that there is life after exams. Things

might seem intense right now, but it won't last forever.
