What’s In A Name? His name lightly or use it in an inap-propriate manner. We should always rejoice in it and think deeply upon its true meaning. A few of the names of God in the Old Testament: El Shaddai-Lord God Almighty First used in Genesis 17:1

El Elyon-The Most High God First used in Genesis 14:18

Adonai-Lord, Master First used in Genesis 15:2

Yahweh-Lord, Jehovah First used in Genesis 2:4

Jehovah Nissi-The Lord My Banner Exodus 17:15

Jehova-Raah-The Lord My Shepherd Psalm 23

Jehova Rapha-The Lord that Heals Exodus 15:26

Jehovah Shamma-The Lord Is There Ezekiel 48:35

Jehovah Tsidkenu-The Lord Our Right-eousness First used in Jeremiah 23:6

Jehovah Mekoddishkem-The Lord Who Sanctifies You First used in Exodus 31:13

El Olam-The Everlasting God First used in Genesis 21:33

Elohim-God, Judge, Creator First used in Genesis 1:1 * occurs in OT over 2000 times

If you are a parent, were you one of those that thought long and hard about what to name your child? Did you get one of the “Names and Meanings” books and search through them for just the right name for your expected little one? Maybe choosing a name dream-ing of what that little one would grow up to be and do. Or perhaps you knew if it was a boy he would be a “junior” named after Dad, or maybe you named them after a beloved grandpar-ent, aunt, uncle, or even sibling or friend. Well, in Old Testament times, a name was not only identification, but an iden-tity as well. Many times a special meaning was attached to the name. Sometimes it reflected on the parents of the child, or on the circumstances of the birth, or even what was happening in their world at that time. Sometimes in Scripture, God Himself dictated what a child’s name was to be. Can you think of some of those exam-ples and why those names were chosen? I found seven. Look for the answer somewhere in this newsletter! Throughout Scripture God also reveals Himself to us through His names. When we study these names, we will better understand who God really is. The meanings behind God’s names re-veal the central personality and nature of the One who bears them. Who is God to you? Is He your Most High God, All suffi-cient One, Master, Lord of Peace, the Lord Who Will Provide? Is He your Father? He is our Jehovah Raah, the Lord our Shepherd. God certainly knows us by our name, so shouldn’t we know Him by His? Hallowed be Your name? To hallow a thing is to make it holy or to set it apart to be exalted, worthy of absolute devotion. To hallow the name of God is to regard Him with complete devotion and loving admi-ration. God’s name is of the utmost important. So we should reserve it with grave significance in our minds and hearts. We should never take

There is a praise song by Don Moen that I have always loved to sing: Blessed be the name of the Lord, blessed be the name of the Lord, Blessed be the name of the Lord Most high. The name of the Lord is a strong tower, The righteous run into it and they are saved. Holy is the name of the Lord Holy is the name of the Lord Holy is the name of the Lord on high. Glory to the name of the Lord Glory to the name of the Lord Glory to the name of the Lord on high! And then, of course, there’s the beloved hymn: Oh, for a thousand tongues to sing, Blessed be the Name of the Lord! The glories of my God and King Blessed be the Name of the Lord! My prayer for myself and each of you is that we truly hold in reverence and awe our Almighty God and show it through our mouths, our actions, and our hearts. He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37 HCSB) I am looking forward to our sharing this Winter Quarter Study! In Christ’s Love, Cynthia Hickey

Fall and Fellowships…. We appreciate Kathy Kellar putting together our September 30th Sunday afternoon lunch at Henry’s Diner (and Roger Blocker for inviting so many wonderful guests!) We had a wonderful time getting to know some we were unfamiliar with and also renewing acquaintances with some we don’t have the opportunity to fellowship with very often! The food was delicious and the ladies assigned to take care of us did a stellar job, which wasn’t an easy feat with so many gathered together! Eve-ryone passed the camera around and took pictures of each other, so I hope you enjoy them!

Fall and Fellowships….

Our Hobo Convention in October was a hoot and a blast! Thanks so much to everyone who hopped a freight and came on over to my “jungle”. And thanks also to all of you who brought such delicious food and also non-perishable food items for our Share Box. Remember our Share Box is in our classroom and we will be collecting non-perishable food items through the first of December to share with a needy family! We played a game at the party where we ended with Hobo “Monikers” that we called each other by the rest of the evening and at the end of the evening when we opened up our “bindles” we had a lot of fun with our Bubba Teeth. Enjoy the photos courtesy of Lesley Brake!
