Bowl For Kids’ Sake “Bowlapalooza” brings teams of five bowlers together to have fun, but most importantly, to raise money that goes directly toward recruiting, enrolling and pairing volunteers with children needing them most.

It’s all about the kids! The more donations you raise means more children will benefit by having a Big Brother or Big Sister in their lives. “Bowlapalooza” is the largest single fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Newaygo County and is among the largest such events in the county. •  April 20 – 4:00–6:00 pm, 6:30–8:30 pm, and 9:00–11:00 pm

•  April 21 – 1:00–3:00 pm, 3:30–5:30 pm, 6:00–8:00 pm, and 8:30–10:30 pm

•  April 27 – 5:15–7:15 pm; Fremont and Newaygo Schools and Friends      Bowl, and 8:00–10:00 pm; “Trades Bowling” (Builders, Electricians, etc.)

The Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) philosophy is a simple one: create friendship with a child based on mutual trust and respect in a structured mentoring environment and the positive effects will “naturally” occur. The primary emphasis of this program is for the volunteer to be a positive influence and role model for the child with whom they mentor.

You don’t have to be a hundred miles from home to discover a new world at Camp Newaygo this summer! Thousands have enjoyed fun-filled summers at Camp Newaygo Girls’ Resident Camp, and co-ed Day Camp. Our 101-acre camp rests along Pickerel Lake, which is snuggled in the Manistee National Forest, near the town of Newaygo. If you like spending time in the outdoors, enjoying the sun and fresh air, having fun on the water, and making lifelong friendships, then Camp Newaygo is the place for you!

Spring Volunteer Day Get out for an early spring clean up at Camp Newaygo. Adults and students needed, and families welcome. If you want to give back to your community and help get Camp off to a great start for 2012; this is a great day to get outside! Who: Everyone is invited When: Saturday, April 14. Work begins at 9:00 AM and wraps up around 4:00 PM Food: Lunch will be provided. Dad & Me (grandpas and uncles too!) Head up to camp Friday night after work, move into your cabin and roast marshmallows around the campfire before nightfall. We have a great program planned. You and your “son or daughter” will be busy having fun trying archery, canoeing, games and enjoying the woods and water. Summer Patio Dinner Series Come enjoy dinner and music on The Ridge, Camp’s garden patio overlooking Pickerel Lake. The events will feature gourmet menus of seasonal local foods, live entertainment, and amazing ambiance. Day Camp For boys and girls to spend each day getting outside and having fun at camp. During week long sessions, counselors will provide activities and adventure from the many options available. Day-campers must bring their own lunch this year. Who: Boys and girls entering 1st–6th grades in fall 2012 are able to participate. For each session, campers will be divided in the morning into two groups by grades when enrollment allows, with everyone coming together in the afternoon. What: Day campers will spend the morning in activities centered around their chosen theme using the natural setting of camp. The afternoon will be spent doing typical camp activities like archery, hiking, games, nature, fishing, arts and crafts, and many others. Campers will also have an opportunity to swim every day! (Weather permitting) When: Day Camp runs each day from 8:30 am–4:30 pm. Parents can drop off their campers at the TrueNorth Service Center between 7:45 am–8:15 am. Parents can also drop off campers directly at camp between 7:45 am–8:30 am. Parents can pick up campers where they were dropped off in the morning at days end at camp from 4:30 pm–5:15 pm or at the TrueNorth Service Center from 4:45 pm–5:15 pm. There is an additional $12 per session fee for transportation from TrueNorth to Camp and back. Conferences and Retreats Utilize camp’s beautiful scenery and rustic charm to make a unique spot for any organization. Camp’s qualified staff will work to ensure a memorable outdoor experience for your group. Staff can customize programs or you may organize your own activities. Staff can teach and supervise activities in a variety of areas, including: nature and environmental education, swimming, boating, arts and crafts, team building initiatives and adventure challenge course. Camp’s capacity is 300 and can customize programs based on your needs. Full food service is also available. TrueNorth’s Cultural Enrichment programs enhances area schools’ arts programs and provides Newaygo County families with affordable, accessible arts opportunities that they would not otherwise experience. Project FOCUS is working to increase assets in our children through a comprehensive network of five community learning center programs that pool coordinated schedules, shared curriculum resources, mentoring, civic engagement, and high adventure and enrichment activities. The community learning centers are located in Baldwin Public Schools (elementary and middle), Hesperia Public Schools (combined elementary and middle), White Cloud Public Schools (elementary and middle), Hart Public Schools, and Walkerville Public Schools, and are for first through eighth grade students in those districts.

Hesperia Elementary School Who: Grades 1–4 What: Project FOCUS offers a healthy snack, 45 minutes of homework help, and an enrichment activity daily. Activities include: arts & crafts, science exploration, fitness fun, reading activities, outdoor games, sports, character education, teamwork skills, and more! Hesperia Middle School Who: 5th–8th graders What: Take advantage of homework help, hands-on enrichment activities, and occasional field trips. LEGO Mindstorms, remote controlled cars, mountain bike rides, hands-on science activities, engineering, technology, group games and art are just a few of the things that we are offering throughout the school year. Our “focus” will be on making learning fun. This is a great program to keep your kids on track with what is expected of them at school. Project FOCUS is also a great way to have fun while learning with plenty of friends that share common goals! Daily meal and transportation are also provided for free! TrueNorth staff and volunteers offer solutions in the areas of housing, hunger, family self-sufficiency, and youth development. In addition, TrueNorth offers community enhancement services that improve the quality of life.

TrueNorth offers programs and services tailored to fit the needs of area senior adults.

LifeLink and MD.2 TrueNorth has offered a personal emergency response system for over 20 years to Newaygo County elderly and other area residents who are subject to sudden, life-threatening changes in their medical condition. The program’s main purpose has always been to provide an easy to use system that allows its subscribers to summon professional, medical help in the event of an emergency.

The LifeLink program also offers the MedReady medication dispensing system to Newaygo County residents. The MedReady system is designed to help individuals who forget to take their medications, or take a large number of medications, with medication management. The MedReady system, coupled with the current LifeLink equipment, is another step in giving Newaygo County residents the ability to live at home, rather than be institutionalized due to medical issues. Contact Charlie Johnson at (231) 924-0641, ext. 136 or cjohnson@truenorthservices.org for more information.

LifeLink is seeking volunteers to install units, clean units, and to sit on the advisory board. Donations, of any amount, would also be greatly appreciated to help low-income seniors and disabled individuals have LifeLink in their homes.

2012 Senior and Caregiver Expo will be an excellent source of information for seniors and their caregivers. There will be a vendor area where businesses, non-profits, and government agencies will provide information and health screenings. Classes will be offered providing information, gardening, legal matters, exercise, and other topics. There will be a raffle of items provided by the vendors. Additionally, the Expo will provide a free light breakfast and lunch to the seniors and their caregivers. Congregate Meal Site TrueNorth serves as a lunch site for senior adults Monday through Thursday through a partnership with Newaygo County Commission on Aging. Sites are designed to maintain or improve the physical and social well-being of mobile older adults through appropriate nutrition services in a group setting. If you are interested in coming for lunch or have any questions, call Commission on Aging at (231) 689-2100. The Center for Nonprofit Housing (CNH) is a supporting organization of TrueNorth committed to assuring all members of our community have access to quality affordable housing, one home at a time.

Retirement Apartments CNH owns and operates a ten-unit five duplex housing complex on Southwoods Avenue in the City of Fremont. The housing facility is adjacent to Arboretum Park and contains six carports, off-street parking, coin-operated laundry and storage space. Each unit is approximately 800 square feet with a full kitchen, bathroom, living room, and bedroom. Heat, cooking and hot water are gas operated and individually controlled.

Homebuyer Assistance Program The Homebuyer Assistance Program (HAP) is designed to assist low to moderate income families purchase and renovate homes in Newaygo County. Homebuyer Education, Financial Management, Pre-Ownership, Foreclosure Prevention, and Home Maintenance ClassesProviding this service to applicants, especially those who do not immediately qualify for mortgage financing helps broaden the pool of prospective homebuyers by allowing families access to the information necessary for them to purchase on their own or utilize our services once their financial situation has improved.CNH provides confidential counseling at no cost to families who are facing foreclosure or experiencing a financial hardship that may lead to foreclosure. CNH works with families facing this crisis to help them understand all available options to prevent the foreclosure from occurring. CNH offers these services at no cost to the homeowner. Homeowners need to attend the class (one time only) and schedule a confidential and private appointment to meet with a housing counselor. CNH is certified by HUD and MSHDA. Call to register for a class and schedule an appointment.

TrueNorth believes that every person living in Newaygo County should have food, heat, safe and affordable housing, and other basic necessities for their households. Unfortunately many families are in crisis, struggling to make ends meet due to job loss, low wages, fixed incomes, an injury or illness, or lack of affordable housing. TrueNorth’s Housing and Family Services strive to restore families to a condition that is not dominated by crisis and stress by meeting immediate, basic needs. Further, TrueNorth case managers routinely collaborate with other local human service agencies to help families create long-term solutions that prevent future crises and lead to greater self-sufficiency.

Food Pantry Client Care This is a key position in the food pantry because volunteers in this position distribute food to low income families in the community. These volunteers also collect food in the pantry from those who donate it. Mobile Food Pantry (Food Truck) The Mobile Food Pantry is a monthly food truck at TrueNorth that provides food for individuals and families in need in Newaygo County. Volunteers are needed to help distribute food and help carry food to their cars. Housing & Family Services Filing Assistant The Housing & Family Services (HFS) department provides a variety of services to address rural poverty. Volunteers will assist caseworkers in the department by maintaining the file room and providing other office support.  Who: Individuals who are 18+, have organizational skills, and are detail-oriented What: Help maintain the file room and provide office support to HFS When: 5–10 hours per week depending on department needs Where: TrueNorth Service Center Why: Volunteers are needed in the HFS Department to support staff so they can provide more services to families in need How: To volunteer, please contact Lora Stevens at (231) 924-0641 or lstevens@truenorthservices.org.

Big Brothers Big Sisters The Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) philosophy is a simple one: create friendship with a child based on mutual trust and respect in a structured mentoring environment and the positive effects will “naturally” occur. Who: Individuals who enjoy working with children What: Share everyday activities as well as exciting new adventures with a child When: As your schedule allows; meeting with the child for approx. 8 hours/month Where: Throughout Newaygo County Why: To provide a child with extra attention, special experiences and activities where self-esteem and self-confidence may flourish. Gardening Guru TrueNorth has several gardens outside of the agency building in Fremont. The gardens need regular attention from a volunteer who enjoys gardening (a.k.a. “Gardening Guru”). If you have never gardened before but would like to learn how, this could be a great opportunity for you as well. Warm Hearts Blanket Bee The cold winter weather is an especially challenging time for low-income families who cannot afford to heat their homes adequately. Often, the only thing that separates cold people from comfort is a warm blanket. Warm Hearts Blankets are made using the no-sew method of knotting two pieces of fleece together, which ensures that almost anyone can do it because no sewing experience is necessary! Camp Spring Volunteer Day Join the Camp Newaygo staff in fun clean up projects and a little spring cleaning to get ready for summer. Lunch will also be provided. Who: Individuals who want to spend a day doing spring cleaning. What: Clean up projects such as raking leaves, organizing, power washing, preparing cabins for new beds, painting cabins, gardening and more! Spring Fashion Fling & Ridge Dinner Series Camp Newaygo has a Spring Fashion event and three community dinners with local chefs and live entertainment. Volunteers are needed at these events for a variety of tasks to make guests feel welcome. This opportunity is great for middle or high school students who are looking to gain skills as restaurant servers! Camper Arrival & Departure Days The busiest days at Camp Newaygo are arrival and departure days for campers. Extra volunteers are needed on these days to greet campers for each session and help campers depart, so staff members can answer any questions that parents may have. Coming to camp can be an intimidating experience for children as well as parents, so it is important to make them feel as welcome as possible. Bump, Set, Spike and Get Muddy! – SATURDAY, JULY 14

It’s time to Dive In (to the mud) and get your team registered now!

Teams may consist of up to 8 players; up to 6 allowed on the court at one time; at least 2 must be of the opposite sex. There are two divisions of play this year: 18 & Under and Adult Open. Younger players may be a part of team in the Adult Open division, but those over 18 may not play in the 18 and Under division.

Entry fee is $150 per team if postmarked or e-mailed by July 8. Payment in full is due with registration.
