The Northland Chapter made history in 2010 when it became the first chapter in the 125-year history of the American Red Cross to successfully reclaim its charter. In 2008, the chapter was stripped of its credential after the failure of its largest revenue stream. Despite financial woes, the chapter’s staff and volunteers continued to provide unabated quality services to the community. The American Red Cross, headquartered in Washington, DC, supported the unit with financial aid and human resources. In October 2009, long-time Red Crosser and Northland resident Judy Hanne Gonzalez was named to lead the reorganization effort. The chapter’s work culminated in formal chapter re-chartering in July 2010 and Gonzalez was named executive director. The chapter also has the distinction of serving the largest geographic jurisdiction east of the Mississippi and supports 364,800 people over 19,000 square miles. This includes Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Lake, Koochiching, and St. Louis counties in Minnesota and Douglas County, Wisconsin. With just seven staff, the Northland Chapter, maintains offices in Duluth and Hibbing and has a network

of 135 disaster volunteers and more than 500 instructors. In 2010, the chapter trained 14,680 people to prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Classes include CPR, First Aid, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Aquatics, and the new Wilderness First Aid curriculum. The Health and Safety department worked with businesses to place AEDs in their facilities and made plans for a training program for Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA) in 2011. More than 100 families were helped by trained volunteers following local disasters such as house fires. The Northland Chapter also trained and deployed volunteers to support national disasters, including a series of devastating Minnesota tornadoes in June that resulted in millions of dollars of damage and left hundreds homeless. A $25,000 grant from the Blandin Foundation helped to provide over $250,000 in relief. Over 900 military personnel and their families were helped by volunteers and staff to prepare for deployment or were assisted through short-term crises. We provided counseling, workshops, coordinated financial assistance, offered communication services, and facilitated emergency leaves. Northland donors rallied to donate over $200,000 to help the victims of the January 12 Haiti earthquake which shook that country and destroyed infrastructure, homes and lives. These gifts have helped provide over $245 million in aid including cash grants and loans to help hundreds of thousands, medical services for nearly a quarter of a million people, and safe drinkable water for over 300,000 people every day. Efforts to repair damaged homes, clear rubble, and build more transitional housing are underway as the long-term Red Cross relief effort continues. “The financial support of 2,615 donors in the communities we serve, including their businesses, foundations, and United Ways helped prove to our national headquarters that we had the grassroots support and commitment to be sustainable,” said the chapter’s executive director, Judy Hanne Gonzalez. “This just couldn’t have happened without the dedication and hard work of the staff, board, and volunteers. Now, we’re just looking to the future.”

From the Chairman

Dear Friends,

It’s hard to believe that in July 2009 the Northland Chapter was in danger of closing its doors after nearly a century of service to northern Minnesota and north-

western Wisconsin. We had high expectations for the North-land Chapter and a commitment to ensur-ing that it not only survive, but flourish.

I am proud to say that we exceeded all of our goals, with great teamwork and leader-ship within the organization. We have not only regained our charter status but, at the same time, we have ful-filled the mission of the Red Cross through great service and programs. Some of these services ensure shelter, food, and clothing for families after a house fire, classes in lifesaving First Aid, CPR/AED and Babysitting training, or help for military families through short-term crises. Our plans for 2011 include development of a program to place AEDs in the commu-nity and to establish a training program for Certified Nursing Assistants.

Thank you to the donors and volun-teers who have shared our passion over the last year. Without your support we would likely not be here today.

All of us greatly appreciate your hard work and dedication to the Northland Chapter and I hope that we

can continue to count on your loyal support. Thank you!

David Manion, Chairman, Northland Chapter Advisory Board of Directors

2010 Chapter Finances

Revenue: $616,660

Expenses: $607,261

The Northland Chapter outperformed its revenue goal of $561,000 in 2010 and ended the year with a modest surplus of $9,339. In addition to gains in charitable giving from individuals, the chapter also began a grant writing program that generated more than $46,000 in new gifts from corporations and instituted a program to encourage planned gifts such as bequests, gift annuities, and gifts of securities. The chapter’s Health and Safety program accounted for over a third of all chapter revenue. Cost-cutting, keeping administrative costs low, and exploring economies of scale highlighted the chapter’s expense strategy. The chapter moved its Hibbing office to a new site. The chapter’s landlord, Johnson Wilson Constructors, made a huge difference in the local Red Cross’s capacity when they agreed to donate remodeling to double the size of the training room in the Duluth office in preparation for the new Certified Nursing Assistant program. Health and Safety program costs accounted for about half of all chapter expenses, with Emergency Services costs at about a third of chapter expenditures. Fundraising and Administration were at about 20 percent of total expenses.
