Introducing Trauma Informed Care CrossOver is very excited to be embarking on clinic-wide trauma informed care integration The word “trauma” is used to describe an event, experience or situation that is emotionally painful and distressing. These events may limit a person’s ability to cope. Trauma can manifest in different ways and may contribute to long term health complications. Sadly because of the life situations our patients experience trauma at rates much higher than average. Many of them left home countries experiencing war, high crime, extreme poverty, and famine. They leave everything they know to come to a country with different customs and a language they don’t understand. This further traumatizes people. Recognizing that traumatic events make people feel unsafe and powerless, trauma-informed practice seeks to create programs where clients and staff feel safe and empowered. The Principles of Trauma Informed Care: Safety Trustworthiness Choice Collaboration Empowerment Strengths-based Approach It starts with asking someone “what has happened to you” versus “what is wrong with you”. CrossOver is in the early stages of implementation and we are very excited to fine tune and expand Trauma Informed Care until it is completely integrated in to all that we do for our patients. All types of staff and volunteers will receive training.
