EXTRAP24 - 16 FLIP OVER... to read all about CHRISTMAS IN ROCKET PARK on Sunday 24 November.

That’s the catch-line for this community-minded magazine, and we hope you like the new-look as much as we do! It’s put together by a fabulous team of volunteers from Mt Albert Baptist (MAB).

At this time of year, I start a list of all the things I need to do and buy before Christmas. It’s daunting, and I often leave it all until the last minute. My aim over the next few weeks is to get organised and focus on enjoying the moment, even if it is chaos!

I enjoyed reading deputy editor Elizabeth Kirkby-McLeod’s story about Petra Bagust’s year off-screen. Petra’s been focusing on being present with her family, and has

some great tips for how to go about it (pages 8&9).

This season we’re focusing on ‘being present’, which is the topic MAB’s lead pastor Jonathan Dove will be speaking about on Sundays (see his column page 4).

Flip over to read all about the annual carols-by-candlelight event, Christmas in Rocket Park, on Sunday 24 November.

The team at Crossing wishes you a very Merry Christmas!

Be Present is our theme for Christmas this year. It’s a timely reminder, isn’t it? After all, it’s so

easy to run around like a headless chicken in (excuse the pun) a foul mood buying presents and preparing for parties, that we are not attentive to what is actually happening around us.

With unmet expectations, anxious moments, and reminders of broken families and lives, the Christmas season is a time when people need more of our attention – not less of it.

Let’s face it: the greatest currency of love is presence, not presents! So, why not take up the challenge to do Christmas a little differently this year? Here are three ideas:

1. Share your Christmas Day with othersInvite someone who has no place to go to share Christmas Day with you. Join with another family and share the cooking. Go on, take the initiative!

2. Simplify the presentsDo we really need more? Do we really want what’s given to us anyway? For the last five years, my family has chosen to buy presents for each child but do presents for the adults differently. Here are some ideas:

• Choose just one adult to give to. Pick a name from a hat early in December and have a cap on spending.

• Enjoy a white elephant gift exchange for the adults. Everyone buys one present and has more chance of leaving with a gift they actually want!

To see an example of how to do this go online and google ‘white elephant Christmas gift exchange’.

• Buy a gift for the less fortunate. Why not tap into the original story of Christmas and bring hope

to others this year? Check out the huge range of ideas from goats to coffee plants at TEARfund’s list of gifts that help others - giftforlife.co.nz.

3. Schedule time for some fun togetherHave each person in the family or flat choose one adventure that everyone can participate in – hiking, paintball, kayaking, a

boat ride, picnic or attending a Christmas service together. Creatively carve out time and plan some adventures together.

All this taps into the very heart of the Christmas story that’s all about a little baby born on Christmas Day that was the very Son of God among us. It turns out that God’s greatest gift to us at Christmas is the gift of his presence.

“Let’s face it: the greatest

currency of love is presence.”

BRINGING HOPE TO THE HILLTRIBESTHIS YEAR A TEAM OF PEOPLE FROM AROUND NEW ZEALAND TRAVELLED TO A REMOTE HILL TRIBE IN NORTHEAST THAILAND. KAY LAWSON EXPLAINS WHAT THEY DID AND WHAT’S AHEAD.

Sometimes it can seem as if the problems of developing countries are too big for one person to make a difference, but a group of people is slowly helping to change the lives of villagers affected by poverty in a remote part of Northeast Thailand.

In this very poor area, the farmers have traditionally grown opium for the drug trade. They’re badly paid and build up huge debts to money lenders just so they can cover their basic needs. At times their children are even sold into the sex trade. Mt Albert Baptist (MAB) has joined people from four other churches and a Hamilton café to offer practical help to these people of the Karen Hill Tribe’s Krey Mo Kee village.

MAB’s committed to supporting these people for five years. In February, a team of 10 people (including Zara Brown, pictured above) flew out to Chiang Mai and drove eight hours south to this village, where 80 families live in a basic subsistence lifestyle.

They built toilets to provide sanitation for the community and began work on a school

building. They also conducted medical clinics to help meet some basic health needs.

But just as importantly the team began to develop relationships with the villagers, as they ate, played and worked alongside them on the building sites.

WHAT’S AHEAD? Brendon Harkness heads up Project Thailand and he’s gathering a new team of volunteers now to travel to Krey Mo Kee from February 15-24 next year. This time the team will work alongside volunteers from a Hamilton church to complete the school building, with a new kitchen and water supply.

They need your help! There are events coming up to help fund the project. MAB is selling a cookbook of favourite family recipes and there’s a special screening of The Hobbit on December 15th.

For more information about the Project Thailand trip next February, and fundraising events, please contact the MAB office on 849-2849.

THE REAL COFFEE FIX

It all comes down to the story behind La Mai coffee, which is grown in Northeast Thailand in a rugged, mountainous area commonly known as the ‘golden triangle’.

Every time you enjoy a cup of La Mai coffee, you’re providing Thai village farmers with badly needed income. It’s helping them make the switch from growing opium to growing coffee.

Any additional profit goes to a charity called Rahab Ministries which rescues women from the red light district in Bangkok.

• La Mai coffee beans can be ordered online at lamai.co.nz or through MAB’s office [email protected]. The beans are roasted in Christchurch each week and couriered up to Auckland.

• You can also buy the beans or a cup of La Mai espresso coffee from MAB’s coffee cart baristas after both Sunday services (starting 9am and 11am).

So enjoy the coffee, and know you’re now part of a story with a happy ending. And please spread the word – the coffee’s great but the story is even better.

Many people are following the progress of Jared Noel, a 32-year old doctor who’s battling cancer and wants to live long enough to hold his yet-to-be-born daughter.

Jared’s a physician at Auckland City Hospital, and has been battling bowel cancer for five years. In October, he and his wife Hannah were devastated by news that the cancer was terminal and he may not live to see his daughter born early next year.

In an amazing act of kindness, his friends, family and even complete

strangers raised more than $150,000 in less than a week to help Jared keep cancer at bay with a costly cancer-inhibiting drug. The story made the front page of the NZ Herald.

The money was raised through the fundraising website, givealittle.co.nz, where people can set up funds for good causes.

In his blog, Jared says people’s generosity has brought him and his wife to tears, but the reality of the situation has not left them as he begins treatment for cancer again.

“We hope and pray that it achieves that extra time that we so desperately want, that we might celebrate the creation of new life, before my own comes to its end.”

Jared recently spoke at MAB about his experience with cancer. To follow Jared's progress, check out jarednoel.wordpress.com

HELP MATE

This is a free service that matches volunteer handymen and women from MAB with people who need a job done.

Help Mate has eight volunteers who are available to help with one-off jobs. All you need to do is call Murray Williams and he will organise someone to help you.

So far the group has helped people get to appointments, fix letterboxes, change light bulbs and move heavy appliances.

Murray says Help Mate’s free service is available to anybody who needs a hand, and it’s not age-specific.

Help Mate would like to hear from you if you need an odd job done. Please call Murray Williams on 846-2335.

Sometimes it can seem as if the Christian subculture has its own language, so here Crossing dishes up the meaning of some common Christianese and Christian cheese. (Source: dictionaryofchristianese.com)

God-incidence n. [Pun on coincidence] A happy coincidence or outcome that is alleged to have been caused by God. The term is preferred by some Christians instead of coincidence to describe what appear to be happy accidents in order to avoid referring to chance, fate or luck.

Theologeek n. [Theology + Geek ‘a person with an intense interest in something’] A Christian who is overly preoccupied with the minutiae of theology.

Arrow Prayer n. [in allusion to the speed with which an arrow can be notched and shot; also see below] A brief, spontaneous, urgent, specific prayer; a prayer made without interrupting what one is presently doing; a prayer consisting of just a few heartfelt words such as “Help, God!”

DONAVIN VAN DER MERWE HAS BEEN ATTENDING MT ALBERT BAPTIST WITH HIS WIFE CHRISTELLE FOR MORE THAN THREE YEARS SINCE IMMIGRATING TO NEW ZEALAND FROM SOUTH AFRICA. DONAVIN TELLS DEPUTY EDITOR, ELIZABETH KIRKBY-MCLEOD WHAT HE DOES DURING THE WEEK.

What do you do for work?I’m a mechanical engineer apprentice and I work in a machine workshop doing precision engineering for Stainless Machining in Penrose. Anyone can walk into the workshop and say ‘I want this made’ from a simple nut and bolt to something complicated and worth heaps of money. I work on a computer programme to draw up the component then work on the machines to make it.

Can you tell us about some memorable jobs?We did a lot of work for Team New Zealand’s boat leading up to the America’s Cup racing. We did pretty much anything and everything on the boat mechanically that was made out of metal. There were other companies in Auckland working on components too.

What’s on the cards for next year? I’ve been working there since April 2010, and I finish my apprenticeship at the end of February next year. It means I’ll be a qualified mechanical engineer!

You and Christelle recently bought a house in Glen Eden. If we came to your neighbourhood for the afternoon, where would you take us?We’d head into Titirangi to the local craft market or one of the beautiful beaches. We don’t drink coffee but we make barista coffee at the MAB coffee cart on Sundays so maybe up to Humbug cafe in Croyden Road or to the awesome fish and chip shop in Glen Eden village.

What are you finding is different in Glen Eden from Mt Albert? There’s a lot less traffic and cars on the road here which makes getting to places much easier. We do not miss New North Road! We do miss the lazy summer afternoons lying next to our neighbour’s pool though!

What’s the trip like between where you live and MAB? How do you pass the time? It’s about 20 minutes to get to MAB now and we usually chat about the coming week or what we plan to do after church (if we should meet with friends for lunch, do the shopping or get busy in our garden)!

CHRISTMAS IN ROCKET PARK GETS A DOSE OF THE WOW FACTOR WITH REGULAR MC AND LOCAL RESIDENT PETRA BAGUST. DEPUTY EDITOR ELIZABETH KIRKBY-MCLEOD CHATTED WITH PETRA ABOUT HER LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE SPOTLIGHT.

FIVE: Power DownTurning the phone onto airplane mode, logging off, signing out and sitting in stillness. I wish I did this more because it increases my creativity and that feeling of wellbeing… being… being present.

Next year marks 20 years of broadcasting for Petra and there’s little doubt she’s one of New Zealand’s best-known female presenters. She was first known to many as one-third of Ice TV (alongside Jon Bridges and Nathan Rarere), before she went on to star in a range of shows including ‘What’s Really in Our Food?’ and most recently TVNZ’s Breakfast programme. This year, however, Petra took a step away from the cameras to focus on life at home with her husband, three primary-aged children and much-loved cats.

“The role I was in was completely consuming and in the end, the role was taking more than it was giving,” reflects Petra. “I only get one set of kids and I don’t want to miss it. It just felt like the right time to put the family first, and myself really.”

Petra calls this year a sabbatical and although she’s mostly off the telly, she says she’s still doing full time unpaid employment at home. The days are still busy - but now she’s able to do things including ride a bike to school with her children, attend school camps and manage her son’s soccer team.

“These are really delicious and formative years and as a parent you are still in the centre of their world. The good pay and the profile of being on the telly wasn’t giving me more than that,” she says.

To say there’s life outside of television is an understatement. Petra’s had many opportunities to host events, do cameo spots on TV shows and be involved in fundraisers – her role as MC of Christmas in Rocket Park is

a good example. This is a role Petra’s done with aplomb since the event began five years ago, and is a natural extension of the role she’s had hosting Coca-Cola Christmas in the Park off-and-on over the past 10 years.

Petra believes Christmas in Rocket Park is a great event, and she enjoys doing something for her home turf. She’s excited about the return of Late 80’s Mercedes this year after great memories of their past performance (see the programme at the back of this issue for more on the band). Although it can be a late evening, she encourages families to make a special night of it and stay till the end.

“The last song of the night, everyone is singing their hearts out, the candles are glowing and it’s very cool,” she says.

Petra’s never made a secret of being a Christian and it didn’t really occur to her that it was anything to separate out and keep for Sundays only.

“It’s not segregated for me, it is just a part of who I am and it’s the approach I’ve taken my entire life. It’s a foundation stone for what my life is about,” she says.

She notes that many of the coolest, most interesting people she met growing up were Christian. And Crossing reckons she’s now one of those cool, most interesting Christians inspiring a new generation to boot.

FAITH, FAMILY AND BROADCASTING ARE SO MUCH A PART OF PETRA BAGUST THAT CONVERSATION WEAVES IN AND OUT OF EACH TOPIC AND IT’S EASY TO SEE WHAT MAKES HER THE WARM, ENTHUSIASTIC, FUNNY AND ENGAGING PERSONALITY WE’VE SEEN ON SCREEN FOR SO LONG.

ONE: Be Grateful This is so easy and so awesome. At night we each thank God for three things from the day. I love hearing what the kids come up with (“the curtains!”)

TWO: Make a DecisionA silent action happening privately inside our own minds can make a powerful impact on our actions. Recently I decided to be more present in that short time directly after school. Now when the kids say “Hey Mum come and look at this!” I don’t constantly say, “Wait a minute,” a phrase even I’m sick of hearing.

THREE: Separate the Important from the UrgentSome things feel and sound like they have to be done NOW… but they aren’t that important. If something is merely loud but can wait a bit (an email, the folding, a text) – I leave it, allowing me to BE in the moment, especially if there’s an opportunity to focus on the person I’m with.

FOUR: Notice the Moment Simply take a nano pause and notice. This has brought me a lot of joy this year. Thoughts like “Wow, look all three kids playing nicely together,” or “What a beautiful tree/sky/breeze.” These completely cost-free thoughts somehow deposit happiness into my life – just noticing the beauty or activity around me.

Petra's Top 5 Tips for Being Present

Page 10: Crossing Magazine Christmas 2013

When did you first start writing?I attribute my love of writing to my Dad. In the 1950’s, he went to England on an English scholarship and he always told us kids (nine of us) “If you want to go places, you have to study very hard.” If we didn’t go away in the holidays, he made us write an essay a day and the best part was his tutoring, all of us sat around him in his favourite armchair. It must’ve paid off because I earned my first $5 from an article I sent to a magazine when I was 13!

What rituals or habits do you have when you write?I’m on the computer doing a lot of blogging, on Facebook and writing emails. These are my de-stressing activities. For serious writing, I work late at night when everyone’s gone to bed. My Dad used to keep a notebook, and he jotted down things. I’ve followed my Dad, and if I find something useful (it could be a word, a phrase or a story) I jot it down keeping in mind I might use it in the future.

WHEN SHE’S NOT ON A BOOK TOUR, AUTHOR ANN CHIN TEACHES AT MAB’S ENGLISH CLASSES. SHE’S PUBLISHED TWO BOOKS AND HAS JUST FINISHED WRITING HER THIRD. CROSSING’S EDITOR AMY WILLIAMS ASKED ANN HOW SHE DOES IT.

Why do you write?I write to relax, but one of the main reasons is to encourage my ESOL students to do well in their English. Technically, I’m not an ESOL person as I started English when I was at primary school, although I spoke a Chinese dialect at home. It’s funny because people often ask if I write my books in Chinese and have them translated into English. I like to tell them, tongue in cheek, I wish I did because one billion people would be able to read them! My book ideas have come out of journalling about my experiences.

You’re a sought-after speaker – how do you cope with talking about the heart-wrenching events of your first book about the death of your infant son?So many Christians were with me during my most difficult time, and it showed me that Jesus was with me. The first big speaking role I did was to more than 300 people! After I spoke, I was told there was not a dry eye in the audience and many people came up to hug me. Now it’s been two years since the book was published, and I still meet with Sands (Stillborn and Neonatal Death Society) mums. The tears still come but not as much.

What’re you working on now?I’ve just finished my third book, ‘Mail Order Bride’. It’s based on the social issues of New Zealand and I have to admit I didn’t feel very proud of it because of the strong language of the street kids. It’s a fiction, but not a Mills and Boon type of book! I’m now working on a sequel to my second book about my family history in Borneo.

For more information about ESOL classes held at MAB, see page 14. To find out more about Ann Chin's books visit annkitsuet-chinchan.blogspot.co.nz

YOUTH MATTERSTALENTED MUSICIAN JESS LOVATT NEVER EXPECTED SHE’D WORK WITH YOUTH. SHE TELLS ROBYN DOVE WHY SHE LOVES HER NEW ROLE.

The word ‘teenagers’ can conjure up images of rolling eyeballs, loud music and psychologist Nigel Latta’s advice programme. But for Jess Lovatt it means a new passion and direction.

“I’m so passionate about this age group, I know from my own experience as a teenager, that these years form who you can be for the rest of your life,” Jess says.

She began her new role as Mt Albert Baptist’s youth pastor in October. Next year she’ll also be working one day a week with 24/7, a nationwide programme designed to provide informal mentoring and encouragement for teens while at school.

“I’m hoping to merge my passion for music with my work with 24/7, finding links with students around a common interest in music.” (Jess sings and plays the keyboard and violin in a jazz band and duo.)

“Over and above that, I’m hoping to forge links between the church and teens in the Mt Albert area. After all, with two high schools just down the road, at 3:15 most days we have quite a congregation of teens on our church property!”

Work’s not the only new direction for Jess. In February she’s getting married to fiancé Paul Brock, who she says is a great support to her in this new role.

MAB will say goodbye to Associate Pastor Jeff Orr and his wife Heather with sadness when they move to Tauranga next year, after four years serving the youth and community.

“I know from my own experience as a teenager that

these years form who you can be for the rest of your life.”

We asked two people to tell us

"WHAT'S BETTER: RECEIVING PRESENTS OR BEING IN OTHER PEOPLE'S PRESENCE?"

from th

e

PEWS

SHE SAYS Time is a commodity. As consumers we are constantly looking for ways to save time. Why? So that we can spend time doing the things that we really want to be doing.

Marketing companies have figured that out – and at Christmas I’m a

sitting duck for the marketing guys. I‘ve finally realised that regardless of how organised I am for Christmas day, in reality I’m really only one television advertisement away from rushing back to the mall for that last minute extra something. My solution: mute the television commercials and don’t even glance at the junk mail.

It might sound obvious, but in our busy life at home there’s nothing nicer than spending quality time with friends and family. Somehow even ‘quality time’ has changed in the last few years – with texting, Facebook and other social media replacing catching up in real time with friends – which is what we really long for!

I’ve learnt to treasure time with family and friends at Christmas and the real gift is each other’s presence during that time.

So – what does that look like? For our family that means Christmas is at our house. It starts with Christmas Eve at Mt Albert Baptist and then a catch up with friends at home afterwards.

On Christmas Day family members know to invite their friends who may not have family in town. Highlights include buying an inexpensive fun gift for our secret Santa game and although we’re not great singers - we love hammering out Christmas carols around the piano. We all contribute something towards

Christmas dinner (a salad, dessert and so on) and then linger around the table for party games and relaxing with each other.

Yes it sounds a bit corny to describe – however the emphasis on presents has taken a back seat. Over time we’ve consciously made a decision to focus Christmas Day on doing the things we love.

We love hanging out together – just enjoying each other’s presence.

HE SAYSSo let’s be honest here. We all enjoy receiving presents from other people! It’s in our nature and hardwired somewhere in our brains to crave and want new stuff.

Even better when given to us as it doesn’t come with the price tag – whether it’s the latest pair of shoes or that nice dress you saw the other week if you are a girl, or the latest power tool you saw on the weekend that you ‘really, really need’ for your next ‘round to-it’ job at home. In my

case, it would be that next piece of diving equipment that I want/need to add to my growing collection.

So everyone likes getting and receiving new stuff, gadgets, clothing and toys. You name it, someone wants it. But is it really better than having your family around you at Christmas time or on your birthdays? Does the warm excited feeling you get when you receive a gift from someone outweigh or last longer than the warm happy feelings you get when surrounded by loved ones close to you?

For me, I think this is a no brainer, presents are AWESOME! Nah just kidding, I don’t think there is a better time than being surrounded by my family and extended family

where we can really engage in great conversation, sports, food and other shenanigans. These are gifts that last a lifetime in the memory banks and can continue to be re-lived again and again. Sure receiving presents is great, but how long does it take before it either becomes boring, loses its purpose, becomes ineffective or even breaks?

As humans we are created in the image of God and therefore created as relational beings, designed and wired to be in community with each other. This is why spending quality and meaningful time with the people you love and care about will always be far more enjoyable and enriching than any gift you could ever receive.

Isaac Lovatt's been attending MAB with his family for his whole life (23 years) and is studying theology part time at Carey Baptist College. He's passionate about youth work, anything aquatic and next year he'll be studying full time for a Masters degree in Marine Biology.

09:00 CLASSIC (CHAPEL)Our Classic service meets in the middle building at 9am. It’s a quieter service which features a mixture of traditional and modern hymns and songs, with the organ and piano. The service then joins the live message from the contemporary service via video feed.

Our services are different each week but the one constant is that we want our lives to be affected and changed by God. We believe that God – Father, Son and Spirit – is with us. We praise Him in song. We listen to teaching from the Bible designed to nourish and challenge our lives. For Christmas Service times see page 14.

09:00/11:00 CONTEMPORARYThis is a contemporary service with a band leading the worship. We seek to combine God’s word with music (both modern and hymns) to motivate and encourage each other. This is a more upbeat and varied service that features biblical life-related teaching supported by a variety of creative arts and multimedia. It’s an informal time so come as you are – no need to dress up.

A GROUP OF PEOPLE FROM CRAVE CAFÉ’S COMMUNITY TRAVELLED TO INDIA TO SEE WHAT FREESET IS DOING TO HELP WOMEN TRAPPED IN INDIA’S SEX TRADE. AMY WILLIAMS REPORTS.

Stepping onto the streets in India’s notorious red light district was a world away from Gemma Taylor’s (pictured above) job serving coffees at Crave café.

The relief teacher and part-time student spent two weeks in Calcutta and Murshidabad in India’s West Bengal state in October, with 12 other Crave staff and customers, to check out what Freeset does and find out how they can help long-term.

Freeset is a fair trade business offering employment to women trapped in the city’s sex trade. They make quality jute bags and organic cotton t-shirts for export.

Gemma says seeing first-hand what Freeset does for women was an eye-opener and she’s keen to continue helping the business.

“We sat with the ladies and did what they would do for a day, we made bangles. It was a really nice time connecting with those women.”

She says the women are employed full-time with Freeset, and it’s very important to them to have a job that’s consistent and reliable.

Gemma is part of a group of people connected with Crave Café, who set up a community charity called ‘MAD For Change’ specifically to support the vision of Freeset.

Separately, MAB’s Rebecca McLeay has taken the bold step to work voluntarily with Freeset in India next year, helping with graphic design.

CRAVE IS NOT YOUR USUAL AUCKLAND CAFÉ - ITS OWNERS DONATE THEIR PROFIT TO LOCAL AND GLOBAL PROJECTS, INCLUDING AN UPCOMING STREET PARTY. READ ABOUT CRAVE HERE THEN MEET THE CREW AT THEIR COFFEE CART AT CHRISTMAS IN ROCKET PARK (NOV 24) TO FIND OUT MORE.

It’s not just the great fair trade coffee that keeps Crave’s customers happy – they know they’re contributing to a good cause with every cup they drink.

The Kingsland café is owned by a group of people who set up a collective which is a charitable organisation. The idea sprung to life two years ago when a few friends got together and decided they wanted to run a café for the benefit of others.

This eclectic group of people is passionate about their local community, and aspire to make Kingsland a better place to live by donating the profit made through the café back to other charitable causes.

Crave holds regular events for the community, and its next is a free street party on Saturday December 7th, with a pig on the spit, fair trade coffee, and music.

Free Street Party at Crave Cafe, 25 McDonald St, Kingsland, Saturday Dec 7 from 5:30pm.

And by the light of that same starThree Wise men came from country farTo seek for a King was their intentAnd to follow the star wherever it went.Chorus

This star drew nigh to the northwestO’er Bethlehem it took its restAnd there it did both pause and stayRight o’er the place where Jesus lay.Chorus

Then let us all with one accordSing praises to our heavenly LordThat hath made Heaven and earth of noughtAnd with his blood mankind hath bought.

Late 80s Mercedes is a 9-piece band that rocks Christmas in Rocket Park! High energy and full of life, these guys will have you groovin’ and movin’ till your feet hurt. Amy Williams caught up with lead singer Clint Harris ahead of the big night.

20

When you see Clint Harris performing on stage, it’s easy to imagine a class of pre-schoolers jumping and dancing in delight. And that’s how it rolls during a normal week when he can be found entertaining youngsters as a much-loved kindergarten teacher in Hamilton.

Music is Clint’s passion and his hobby, and that’s also the case for the other eight Hamilton-based members of the nonet.

This is Late 80s Mercedes second stint performing at Christmas in Rocket Park, and he says they really enjoy the community spirit at the event.

“There’s a real good vibe at Christmas in Rocket Park. We got excited when we got a recall and I thought ‘Yeah cool! I remember that gig,’” Clint says.

“We all go to different churches, and for some reason all of us have a real passion to get involved in our communities pretty much because we love where we live.”

Late 80s Mercedes formed in 2000, and when Clint joined as the lead singer 10 years ago it was a three piece.

He says over time they’ve collected more musicians as band members left for their OE then returned to become part of the crew again.

The band now boasts a brass section, with saxophones and trumpets, as well as the usual drums, guitar and bass line-up.

They add their own signature to well-known songs, and their music’s been described as swing-funk.

“It’s just fun music. We do a lot of covers and we look for songs that have a bit of a fun element to them,” Clint says.

Late 80’s Mercedes experienced their first chart success in January 2010, with their self-titled debut extended play (EP) disc ‘Late 80’s Mercedes’. The EP reached number 14 on the New Zealand Albums Chart in the week of its release.

The band has just recorded a Christmas EP, called ‘Christmas with Late 80’s Mercedes’, which is available to buy at Christmas in Rocket Park or on iTunes.

Clint says it’s a dream for the band to produce a full album one day.

“It’s a hobby for us. We’re all good friends and we like music and hanging out together as well,” he says.

And there’s no mistaking that when you see the band performing together with so much energy and fun. Enjoy.

CHRISTMAS WITH LATE 80’S MERCEDES IS ON SALE AT CHRISTMAS IN ROCKET PARK, OR FROM ITUNES.

Hailing from all corners of New Zealand, we’re incredibly excited to have these talented performers join us at Christmas in Rocket Park this year. We invite you to pull up a patch of grass in the park and usher in Christmas!

WHO’S WHO CHRISTMAS IN ROCKET PARK

AT

CHRIS OPIE BAND C0-DIRECTORTalented musician Chris is returning to Christmas in Rocket Park to lead the Carols Band alongside MAB’s worship director Sharee Harkness. Music’s been a part of Chris’s life for as long as he can remember – he’s played some kind of instrument from a young age. He then went on to study at the prestigious New Zealand School of Music, majoring in drumming. It’s fair to say Chris doesn’t miss a beat and is now a professional musician. He’s performed at gigs around the country with a host of different artists including Dave Dobbyn and Brooke Fraser.

MAAKA FISO GUEST SINGERWith one of the smoothest voices New Zealand Soul has to offer and charisma and personality to boot, Maaka is slowly making his mark in the New Zealand music scene. With the X-Factor making Maaka a household name, a record deal and a management deal under his belt, the singer’s working on a debut solo EP produced by Hip Hop heavyweight Tyna Keelan. A release date is set for this summer. He’ll be teaming up with our Carols band for some great songs and entertainment throughout the evening.

PETRA BAGUST MCWe love Petra! She’s been with Christmas in Rocket Park since the event began five years ago and it wouldn’t be the same without her. Petra’s best known as a television presenter, and will mark 20 years on screen next year. She left her role as co-presenter of TVNZ’s morning show Breakfast just over a year ago. Petra is a proud local resident and we appreciate her ongoing support. See pages 8 and 9 of Crossing magazine (on the flip side) for the full story on what she’s been doing this past year.

JESSE MULLIGAN PRESENTER / COMEDIANJesse will be telling the Christmas story (with a difference) as part of the evening programme. He’s a TV presenter and comedian, who hosts Seven Sharp on TV One. You might also know him from previous appearances on 7 Days and Would I Lie To You? Jesse lives in nearby Arch Hill with his partner Victoria and their two girls, Hazel and Daisy. This is his first Christmas in Rocket Park, but he’s looking forward to being part of it and contributing to the neighbourhood he and his children spend so much time in.

FROM THE EVENT ORGANISERWelcome to Christmas in Rocket Park! For the fifth year running, we’re hosting this free community event to foster community spirit in the heart of Mt Albert.

Each year about 4000 locals come to sing carols and be entertained by a stellar line-up of guest performers. It all comes together thanks to the commitment of volunteers from the church and community, and generous sponsors including the founding sponsors Bayleys and Goodwin Property Management (after all, it costs a whole heap of money to put on such a professional and fun-filled event).

Throughout this evening, please look out for Plunket Mt Albert volunteers, who’ll be bucket jingling and selling raffle tickets to raise money for the services they provide to local families. Their work is essential in this community.

And it’s with sadness that I say goodbye to you Mt Albert folks, as this will be my third and final year as event manager. My wife and I are moving to Tauranga to be closer to family (and the beach!)

May the goodwill, peace and joy of Christmas be with you.

Jeff OrrAssociate Pastor Mt Albert Baptist

Dear Friends,

This is the fifth year that Mt Albert Baptist has pulled together the community to celebrate Christmas at Rocket Park and raise much-needed funds for Mt Albert Plunket’s work in the local area. Last year more than $4,500 was raised by the generousity of everyone involved!

The money from this event is crucial to continue Plunket’s work in the local community, including:

• First aid courses for parents and caregivers in Mt Albert. The money from Christmas in Rocket Park 2012 helped more than 50 new parents receive this invaluable education.

• Buying woollen clothing for children in Mt Albert and the surrounding areas.

• Producing an annual guide to inform local families of child-friendly activities, classes and events in Mt Albert.

• Supporting the local Mt Albert Playgroup with money to buy toys and educational material.

• And maintaining the local Plunket clinic rooms, providing second hand clothing for those who need it and running regular coffee groups for new parents – providing support and friendship.

Thank you to everyone who has made a donation, have a great night and a Merry Christmas.

CHRISTMAS IN ROCKET PARK IS A ZERO WASTE EVENTOur goal is to minimise and eventually eliminate waste at this event. You’ll see bins for different types of waste. Please allow our friendly volunteers to help you place rubbish into the correct bin.

We appreciate the support of all our sponsors, but this year we found it hard to attract sponsorship and fell short of our budget. We desperately need more sponsors to make the event happen next year.
