The nuclides processed in-clude 1 N(ENDF/B MAT = 1133), 160(ENDF/BMAT = 1134), Si(ENDF/BMAT = 1151),27M(~F/B MAT = 1135), 12C(ENDF/BMAT = 1165), Fe(ENDF/BMAT = 1122), andlH(ENDF/BMAT = 1148).

Multigroup cross sectionswere produced for

several nuclides from the ENDF/B data file, Version

111.1 The materials processed include the follow-

ing:

The cross section multigroup structure consists

of thirty neutron and twelve photon groups. Sepa-

rate tables are provided for each of four Legendre

components,Po, PI, P2, and P3 for each nuclide. The

neutron cross sections were produced using the ETOG2

code, the photon production cross sections by the

LAFHANO code,3 and the photon interactioncross sec-4

tions by the GAMLEG code. The group energy bound-

aries for the neutron groups are shown in Table I and

those for the photon groupa are in Table II. output

from these three codes was combined using the PROSEC

codq to produce coupled neutron-photoncross sections5

in the “FIDO” form of the LASL formet.

II. CROSS SECTION FORMAT

The positions of the various multigroup terns

are repreeented in the neutron-photonmatrix as

shown in Fig. 1. Note that group numbers are label-

ed along the top (30 neutron + 12 gamma = 42 total)

and position numbers along the left side (42 trans-

fer locations plus three positions for Ua, VUf, and

at). Now take, for example, cross sections for group

1, a neutron group. We see that the averaged-absorp-

tion cross section for group 1, (Ua), ie in position

(1,1); the averaged value for nu-fission for group 1,

(Wf)l, is in position (2,1); the averaged value of

the transport cross for group 1 (Ut)l, ie in position

(3,1). The self-scatterterm of the transfermatrix,

u~+1, is in position (4,1),but other tranafers from

group 1 are along a diagonal of the matrix. If we

follow this diagonsl downwards,we note transfers

from group 1 to the other neutron groups until we

arrive at a transfer from group 1 to group 31. This

last-mentionedterm represents the cross section for

photon-productionin photon group 1 by neutrona in

neutron group 1. The remainder of the group-wise

photon productioncross sections induced by group 1

are found by continuingdown the diagonal. Risking

repetition, the number found in position (45,42)of

the matrix, the lower right-handcorner, ia the

group-averagedcross section for neutrona in the

first group producing photons in the lowest-energy

photon group.

Let us now examine the area of the matrix in

which are located the photon interactioncross sec-

tions, namely, the upper right hand part of Fig. 1.

The photon interactionabsorption cross section,

(Uy)l, is located in position (1,31); it repreeents

the cross section for the pair-productionphenomenon

plue that for the photoelectriceffect. Position

(2,31) is zero; position (3,31) contains (U~)l, the

total photon interactioncross section averaged over

photon group 1. As in the neutron case, transfer

terms follow along a diagonal. These are, of course,

the group averages of the Legendre moments (Po, PI,

‘2‘ P3) of the Klein-Nishinadifferential scattering

cross section as prepared by the GAMLEG code. It

should also be noted that the photon coherent scatter-

ing cross section is included in CS~.

To understand the card format, let us compare

Fig. 1 to actual numbers on the cards for S1 (see

Appendix). The first card is a header card for the

P-O table and the data begins on the second card

which ia labeled “Cards 1“ in columns 73 to 80. The

data on the cards are in columns 1 thru 72, six num-

bers per card in field widths of twelve. The first

number on the card correspond to position (1,1) in

Fig. 1; that is, it is the absorption cross section

for neutron group 1. It has a value of 0.388401.

The second number on the card corresponds to Wf= 0.0

from position (2,1) of the matrix. The third number

is 1.79311,which is (Ut)l, from position (3,1) and

the fourth is 0.668171, the value for U1+l in matrix

position (4,1). In the fifth field, we see the char-

acters “41R0.” This is a “compressing”feature of

the FIDO format and indicates that forty-onezeroa

are to follow which we notice will fill out the first

COhUIUI of Fig. 1. The number in the sixth field,

0.51133, is (Ua)2 from position (1,2) in Fig. 1 which

begins the croaa-sectiondata for group 2. Note that

there are no “breaks” in the numbers punched on the

cards so that the entire matrix can be represented

by a single vector when reading the cards.

Finally, note that there are seventy-sevencards

in the P. table but only 44 cards in each of the PI,

‘2‘ and P3 tables. The reason for this ie that the

photon productiondata are isotropicand the zeros

are compressedby the FIDO format in the higher

der tables.
