The Local Church

Intercultural Ministry Environment

INTRODUCTION The need for qualified and dedicated Christian

leaders capable of serving in multi-ethnic contexts is growing rapidly in North America. Not only mission agencies, but churches are looking for individuals who can meet the challenge of intercultural ministry. Through the Cross-Cultural Leadership Training Program, Northwest Baptist Seminary offers a creative method for Fellowship Baptist churches to be active partners in preparing qualified and skilled people who can fulfill their passion to minister in a multi-ethnic setting.

The Cross-Cultural Leadership Training Program offers a way for members of Fellowship Baptist Churches to train for intercultural ministry either in a Canadian setting or internationally. A creative and innovative blend of mentored learning in multi-ethnic settings, in-church training, and formal academic courses is provided to develop a godly pastoral perspective and effective intercultural leadership skills in an affordable manner. If admitted individuals complete both levels of the program, they would earn an accredited Master’s degree while they are being mentored by experienced ministry leaders. This program offers a way for people who are recognized for their gifting and calling to find support for their ministry training through partnership with Northwest and their local church. Such individuals will have the advantage of learning on the job, guided by experienced ministry leaders and seminary faculty.

The Cross-Cultural Leadership Training Program prepares the dedicated student for cross-cultural ministry in missions, intercultural service within Canada or for ministry as a missions pastor.

ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS Students seeking admission to the Cross-Cultural Leadership Training Program must have two years (60 credit hours) of formal post-secondary education or its equivalent as evaluated by NBS.

Stage Two: Master of Arts in Christian Studies with an emphasis in cross-cultural ministry- (52 credits)

The Diploma in Cross-Cultural Ministry is issued by Northwest Baptist Seminary while the Master of Arts programs are studied through ACTS Seminaries.

TUITION COSTS The 2007 rate for Diploma level courses is $175 per credit over a total 30 credit hours. $175 X 30 = $5,455* Church $1,818 Seminary $1,818 Student $1,818 *Adjusted to include RES500 Research Strategies which is charged at the current ACTS Seminaries tuition rate. The 2007 rate for Masters level courses is $380 per credit over a total of 52 credit hours as determined by ACTS Seminaries. $380 X 52 = $19,760 Church $6,586 Seminary $6,586 Student $6,586

Checklist Dear Pastor, Here is how we suggest you pursue your church’s interest in the Cross-Cultural Leadership Training Program.

1. Read all the enclosed information in order to determine whether a) the student mentoree you are considering for this program and b) your church situation would meet the program expectations. (This step will require you to obtain considerable background information from the student mentoree)

2. Contact Northwest Baptist Seminary to confirm the student's general academic qualifications. Phone: (604) 888-7592 E-mail: [email protected]

3. If the academic indications from the Seminary are generally positive, the church is in a position to participate in such a partnership, and you are confident in the suitability of the student mentoree, contact the Coordinator of Intercultural Leadership Development (CILD), Mark Naylor to determine if there is room in the Gateway Trax program, the possibility of a viable intercultural ministry setting and suitable mentors. Home Phone: (250) 652-6226 Office Phone: (604) 888-7592 E-mail: [email protected]

4. If indications are generally positive, the student mentoree must make a formal proposal to the church seeking their support for the program. The church officials are required to sign the application form.

5. If the church leadership approves support, the student mentoree will complete the application and submit it to the CILD for consideration.

6. After considering the application and the potential for a viable ministry setting as well as a suitable mentor(s), the CILD will seek an interview with you & the student mentoree at a date no later than June 15.

7. The CILD will then submit the application to NBS for formal approval.

8. NBS issues an acceptance letter and course registration information to the student.

9. On receipt of the letter, the student mentoree will register for September courses. Books will then be ordered and students will prepare to begin.

Schedule The following is a proposed schedule of courses for the duration of the Cross-Cultural Leadership Training Program. Students are free to customize their own schedule with the advice of both the Seminary and the church. It should be noted, however, that the Diploma must be completed (minimum G.P.A. 3.0) before the student can be admitted to Master of Arts courses within ACTS Seminaries.

The Diploma part of the program will include a significant component of closely mentored, practical, intercultural training.

Admission to the Master’s component of the program will be on academic probation for the first 15 credits of the Master’s level study pending achievement of an acceptable GPA.

The Diploma in Cross Cultural Ministry is completed through Northwest Baptist Seminary with potential admission to the ACTS Seminaries MACS program based on meeting ACTS

admission requirements which includes a 3.0 GPA at the undergraduate level. NOTE: Students with minimal undergraduate level Bible or Theology courses

will also be required to successfully complete: BIE 500 Introduction to the Bible and

THS 540 Introduction to Theology

Second Stage: Master of Arts in Christian Studies (MACS 52 Credits) The MACS with an emphasis in Cross-cultural ministry is offered by Northwest Baptist Seminary through its participation in the ACTS Consortium (Trinity Western University). All ACTS rules and protocols apply. The degree can be completed in two years (though a student can take longer if desired). Students can be expected to contribute as many as 40 hours of work per credit hour over the course of the 15 weeks of the semester depending on the academic demands. A student is expected to commit to 8 hours per week of academic study per 3 credits in a given semester (each course is three credits in length). The following schedule assumes the student begins in the fall of an odd numbered year and is located in a Canadian intercultural ministry setting. This plan would require two week-long visits to campus each semester, once early in the semester and the other toward the middle of the semester. The rest of the program can be managed online. Please note that CLD 510 requires an extra visit. This course is concluded by late September so as not to interfere with other Fall semester courses. For further details, please see www.acts.twu.ca.

The graduate essay must be completed before the student can “walk” at graduation. Therefore, a student wishing to participate in graduation in April of the second year should begin the graduate essay (MCS 810) in the preceding summer or fall.

Cross-Cultural Leadership Training Program

CLTP Application Package Page 5 Northwest Baptist Seminary

Financial Expectations It is anticipated that the student will be a full-time intern employed by the church throughout the duration of the program. While these arrangements can be negotiated the plan is that the church would provide basic living expenses (perhaps room and board) plus one third of the cost of ACTS/NBS tuition (not including Gateway fees and the cost of the STM trip). The other two thirds would be shared equally between the student and the Seminary by way of scholarship. Terms of employment are entirely within the province of the church and student. Students will be responsible for their own costs related to any additional courses required to meet program admission standards. Books and supplies are the responsibility of the student. The Seminary reserves the right to limit the number of students enrolled in the program as funds allow.

TUITION COSTS: The 2007 rate for Diploma level courses is $175 per credit over a total 30 credit hours. $175 X 30 = $5,455* Church $1,818 Seminary $1,818 Student $1,818 The student and church would be responsible for a total of $1,818 each, spread unevenly over the three semesters of the first year. This amount does not include the cost of books, supplies, or Gateway fees or the STM trip expenses which would be over and above these costs and are the responsibility of the student and church. *NOTE: RES500 Research Strategies is an ACTS course and falls under ACTS current ACTS tuition rates. This adjustment is reflected in the figures above. The 2007 rate for Masters level courses is $380 per credit over a total of 52 credit hours as determined by ACTS Seminaries. $380 X 52 = $19,760 Church $6,586 Seminary $6,586 Student $6,586 The student and church would be responsible for a total of $6,586 each, spread unevenly over the six semesters of the second and third year. This amount does not include the cost of books and supplies which would be over and above these costs; nor does it allow for inflationary increases from year to year. SUMMARY: reflecting a projected 5% yearly adjustment for inflation at the masters level given the student commencing this program in the Fall 2007 semester.
