A Long History of

Supporting the Arts

PAUL AND MELISSA KEISWETTER

The Keiswetters, like many Crooked Tree Arts Center patrons, attribute their involvement in the arts to one of CTAC’s founders, Edith Gilbert. An arts lover and community enthusiast, Edith was their neighbor and encouraged them to become involved over two decades ago.

Appreciation for the arts has been a lifelong process for the couple. As a child, Melissa took piano, ballet and sang in a choir. Later as a teacher, she witnessed how the arts affected her students. “I saw the desire in my students to express themselves through artistic endeavors,” she remembers. “Art class was always their favorite time of the week.”

Paul sees the value of art as more than just the participation. “The arts open many doors,” he explains, “leading to thought-provoking discovery and personal growth.” Melissa wholeheartedly agrees with Paul, adding, “The arts elevate human beings to a realm above our basic intelligence to enliven and utilize our senses, through dance, song, theater, sculpture, and immersing ourselves in other’s experiences in the arts.”

Through their business, Petoskey Plastics, the couple has been involved in many events and initiatives at CTAC. One of Melissa’s favorite memories is being chair of the early successful art auction which has since grown into CTAC’s annual fundraiser, D’Art for Art. Paul proudly remembers working to help bring the Art Train to Petoskey. “Art Train was an unbelievable visual of ‘things to come’,”he explains. “It represented a new paradigm for our community.”

“It gives me great pleasure to read the publication of Art News (CTAC’s newsletter). Whether it’s youth art classes, a musical performance, art show or other activities, it’s all contributing to the expansion of knowledge, sophistication, and social interaction for the residents of our community,” notes Paul.

In 2003, Petoskey Plastics, and the Keiswetters were recognized for their support and contributions to the arts community when they received the Benefactor eddi Award—a much deserved recognition of their community spirit.

When asked about what they would like to see for CTAC’s future, unsurprisingly, their answers revolve around youth and the community. “The ideal future for the Arts Center would be continual improvement to current programs with a growing effort to reach the increasing number of community members,” says Paul. Continues Melissa: “To ensure that every child in northern Michigan could experience a variety of artistic expressions. One or two experiences in the arts may make a significant difference in that child’s life as an adult.”

FROM TONY RYNER,BOARD CHAIRMAN

It’s time we say goodbye to another summer season in Northern Michigan, and an awesome season for the arts. More than ever we are seeing people and communities rally around the arts. I can’t imagine what the region would be like if not for the hard work and effort by so many dedicated to “Inspiring and Enriching” people’s lives through the arts.

The Arts are one of the key pillars to a successful community. We measure the quality of life in the communities we live in by the level of health care provided, the quality of education offered and the support of the arts.

While the importance of health care and education is easily understood, sometimes it takes a little more effort to bring understanding on the importance of the arts. The arts offer the basic fabric that weaves a community together. In its purest form it lacks prejudice, is apolitical and is simply an outlet for individual expression. It’s a voice that resonates across beliefs, personality types and political affiliation. They offer a common thread that we can all embrace.

CTAC supports all of the arts across Northern Michigan. We are a community-based arts organization with hundreds of volunteers and several thousand members, supporting the region from Mackinac to Manistee. We offer a regional platform that provides a stepping stone for local artists to gain exposure across the region and are a platform for education, connecting the arts to our communities. None of which would be possible without your support. We are grateful to you, our members and supporters.

2015 ARTIST RESIDENCY PROGRAMPrintmaker, Michael Marks led a workshop for local artists, sharing his techniques in drawing, collage, and printmaking, while planning to bring back his northern Midwest inspiration and learnings to his creative community in Maine.

Graphic Designer, Amanda Boyd found inspiration in the nature and environment of the Good Hart and Petoskey areas. She captured emotion by layering charcoal, chalk pastels, and soot—techniques that she shared this summer with area artists.

Current Gallery Director at Boise State University, Kirsten Furlong created work inspired by exploration of the area and research into the local flora, fauna and landscape. By allowing the culture of a specific area to influence her creative process, Kirsten’s artwork reflects the uniqueness of each area she visits.

Special thanks to Susan and Bill Klco for hosting the 2015 artists!

D'ART FOR ART’Wow—18 years and counting! Thank you to all our guests, donating artists, committee, businesses, guest vintners, brewers and chefs for another successful year. SAVE THE DATE—we hope to see you at the warehouse at Irish Boat Shop, JULY 13 & 14, 2016!

BILL MILLAR: VOLUNTEER OF THE YEARBill Millar IS THE example of a superstar volunteer—so proud to honor him with the 2015 Volunteer of the Year Award!

As Chairman of the Board, he created the Volunteer Spotlight feature at our monthly meetings. Bill would call the volunteer he wanted to highlight, invite them to a meeting, but not tell them why they were invited. He would share the volunteer’s contribution to CTAC with the board members and typically the individual would be speechless! In fact, several chosen volunteers got a bit misty when they shared their experiences with the board members. He understands the value of volunteerism.

As a board member since 2009, Bill and Jane, his wife, also a Past Chairman, attend nearly every CTAC event. Swirls, D’Art for Art, exhibit openings, concerts, and lectures. Bill can frequently be found in the CTAC Kitchen learning from area chefs during our Culinary Arts Series.

Bill is a hands-on board member as he volunteers for New Year’s Eve at CTAC, Sugar Plum Fairy Tea, Annual Spring Strings Concert, opening receptions, Youth Art Festival, art exhibition installations, ushering, and D’Art for Art. When we need an emcee for the Concerts in the Park…Bill’s our guy!!

Bill isn’t hanging up his volunteer hat…he’s continuing to co-chair the Performing Arts Committee, a group he has led for several years. And, we know we will continue to see him strolling through the front door, treats in hand…with his greeting, “What’s going on?!”

This wonderful “role call” of our members and donors includes those people/organizations that either paid membership, provided a cash donation or purchased a ticket for a fundraising event during the fiscal year of April 1, 2014 through March 31, 2015. We are so very grateful for the generosity of all of our donors and it is important to us that each of you are properly recognized. If we neglected to include you or made an error, please contact us so we can make the necessary corrections.

Dear CTAC Members—

You may have noticed this publication is a combination of our fall newsletter and our annual report. Our upcoming events and news are complemented by our list of donors for the past fiscal year. You understand we can only have one if we have the other. Programming is only possible through the generous support of thousands of donors. We enjoy sharing photos of summer, hinting of holiday happenings and reminding you of deadlines and opportunities. But we really treasure thanking you for your involvement as an active participant and engaged member.

Hope to see you at the weekly CTAC Artisan and Farmers Market in Petoskey or an upcoming Coffee @ Ten in Traverse City!

Your President,Liz Ahrens
