Faces of the Futures ProgrammeSelected Year 12 and 13 students have the opportunity to be involved in the Faces of the Future high performance programme which is held during Term 2 and 3 every second year. A guest speaker of note is invited to attend each weekly session and speak about their experiences and proffer insights into success and achievement.

Student Support CentreStudents who require additional learning support or individualised programmes are catered for in the on-site Learning Support Centre which is staffed by an experienced, knowledgeable and caring team.

Cromwell CollegeCENTRAL OTAGO

Cromwell College is a Year 7-13, Decile 8 co-educational state secondary school of 400 students. Students at CromwellCollege enjoy a nurturing learning environment, outstanding facilities and strong community support. Cromwell College values personal excellence, respect and courage and these are reflected in our school motto, Whaia te taumata (Pursue the highest peaks) - Deserve Success.

School FacilitiesThe College has a 400 seat auditorium as well as a fullsized gymnasium with basketball, volleyball, badminton and futsal courts. It also has a large and well equipped weight training room. The College operates specialist facilities for art, photography, food technology and catering, workshop technology, graphics, information technology and a music suite which has three practice rooms.

Cromwell College is set in park-like grounds. As well as extensive playing fields, the eight hectare site has numerous courts for tennis and netball. The town’s rugby and touch fields, hockey turf and recently upgraded 25 metre indoor swimming pool are adjacent to the College and used extensively by students. An aquatic centre on the lakeshore is maintained by the school and is home to a fleet of yachts, kayaks and windsurfers.

Vocational ProgrammesYear 11-13 students at Cromwell College who are interested in a career in trades or technology have the opportunity to study one day each week at the Central Lakes Trades Academy, located at the Cromwell Campus of the Otago Polytechnic. They spend the remainder of the week at Cromwell College completing NCEA qualifications in other subjects. The vocational programmes available at the Central Lakes Trades Academy include:

w National Certificate in Building, Construction and Allied Trades Skills

w National Certificate in Motor Industry

w National Certificate in Agriculture / Horticulture

Cromwell College also offers the following vocational qualifications:

Academic ProgrammesCromwell College offers a wide range of subjects at all three levels of the NCEA. NCEA Level 1, 2 & 3 results for Cromwell College are comparable to national averages. Cromwell College seeks to continually improve the academic results of its students and in particular, the number of students gaining merit and excellence endorsements.

Gifted & Talented StudentsCromwell College was the first secondary school in Otago to establish a dedicated weekly withdrawal programme for students identified as gifted and talented in order to create opportunities for intellectual, creative, ethical, social and emotional growth in a setting of like minds. The innovative Half Day School for Year 7-9 students is run by a Specialist Teacher of Gifted Students. Gifted Year 10 students are mentored by this teacher and take part in fieldtrips throughout the year. Cromwell College students participate in a number of activities such as the Open Minds’ Tournament and the Portobello Marine Studies programme.

Junior SchoolYear 7-8 students are placed in small classes which are usually

taught by a form teacher for core subjects. They also benefit from access to specialist classrooms and teachers. Junior students enjoy

annual camps, ice skating and ski days and make use of the Cromwell College Aquatics Centre. The presence of younger

students gives the school a family atmosphere.

Outdoor Education & Snow Sports ProgrammeCentral Otago is a spectacular setting for Cromwell College’s Outdoor Education programme which includes flat and white water kayaking, windsurfing, mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding and tramping. Students have easy access to the outdoors and qualified instructors.

During Term 3, after interval on a Thursday, some Year 11-13 students are able to leave the classroom and head to Cardrona Resort where they spend the rest of the day skiing and snowboarding.

Cromwell College Apartments and Outdoor Pursuits ProgrammeThe Cromwell College Apartments is a school hostel with a difference. International students and New Zealand students live together in flats. Each flat has five or six single bedrooms, a lounge, bathroom and fully equipped kitchen. Students who live at the Apartments take part in the Independent Living Programme which is an excellent preparation for life beyond school. With the help of on-site adult supervisors, students are guided in all aspects of flatting including cooking, budgeting, menu preparation and co-operation.

On Sundays and long weekends all students living at the Cromwell College Apartments take part in comprehensive Outdoor Pursuits programme with qualified instructors. This programme has been running for over 15 years and has proved to be very popular. It includes kayaking, windsurfing, sailing, mountain biking, climbing, skiing or snowboarding and two three-day tramps, culminating in a major three-day expedition near the end of the year. The Outdoor Pursuits programme provides challenge, increases skills and builds confidence.

Duke ofEdinburgh’sHillary AwardThe Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award is a majorinternational programme for young people over the age of 14 years. It involves physical activity, mental challenge, individual perseverance, teamwork and interactionwith other people. Young people are required to challenge themselves for their own personal development and also, to appreciate the needs of other people and to help them.

Significant numbers of Cromwell College students attain Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. Cromwell College is committed to providing this opportunity because The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award promotes excellence and builds character.

Cromwell is a town of 4000 residents

on the shores of Lake Dunstan,

surrounded by the rugged Central Otago landscape and close to the

popular tourist resorts of Wanaka

and Queenstown. Hot, dry summers

and cold, clear winters make

Cromwell ideal for viticulture and horticulture. Most of the six Southern Lakes ski fields are located less than

an hour away.

Cromwell & Central Otago

Student LifeCromwell College is a small school with a lot happening. Students participate in a myriad of cultural and sporting activities, inside and outside the classroom. We run a lunchtime sporting and cultural programme to engage students. Students at Cromwell College are active, recently achieving a 76% involvement rate in sporting activity. The Sports Co-ordinator ensures that students are able to participate in a wide range of local and regional competitions.

Students are increasingly engaged with the Arts in the biennial school production and soirée, the talent quest and a themed Arts Week for juniors at the end of the year. The Cultural Department, a student initiative, makes a popular contribution to the cultural

life of the school. Our kapa haka group meetsweekly with an outside tutor and College staffto provide support at the Mana Pounamu awards as well as school and community functions. Itinerant and private music lessons are available in orchestral, highland and rock instruments.

Regular house competitions take place between the College’s four houses: Clutha, Kawarau, Nevis and Pisa. Winning the house shield at the end of the year is actively sought. Many students gain leadership experience as prefects, senior and junior house captains and deputies, as members of the School Council and through the peer support programme. Cromwell College is a caring school. Amongst other things, this is shown by enthusiastic support for World Vision and student-driven fundraising for various causes throughout the year.

International StudentsCromwell College, in the South Island of New Zealand,

has a successful history of hosting international

students. Students enjoy a safe, friendly and

relaxed atmosphere, a specialist outdoor

education programme plus easy access to the

outdoors and nearby tourist destinations. They

become fully integrated into school life and enjoy

an authentic experience, making friends for life.

International students have the opportunity to

study for IELTS English language examinations. They

can choose to live in our specialist student hostel,

the Cromwell College Apartments, or in a homestay

arrangement with a local family. Cromwell College

prides itself on the high level of pastoral care and

support provided for International students. The

College is a member of the ODENZ group of New

Zealand secondary schools and is a signatory to

the New Zealand Code of Practice for the Pastoral

Care of International Students.
