NSW public schools are committed to the pursuit of excellence and the provision of high quality educational

opportunities for each and every child. Our schools vision statement is “Students at Cromer Campus will be successful today and prepared for tomorrow. We are committed to providing excellence in teaching and learning that fosters resilient, passionate and accomplished lifelong learners.”

The School Excellence Framework (“SEF”) supports all NSW public schools in their pursuit of excellence by providing a clear description of the key elements of quality practice across the three domains of learning, teaching and leading. On the 28/08/2018 our school will participate in external validation which involves the school preparing a submission that describes the schools current position in relation to the School Excellence Framework. Principal’s report continued...

In preparing for external validation most members of the executive team were allocated an area of responsibility that aligned with their daily work and an element of the SEF. Evidence samples were derived from existing workflows and were annotated and uploaded to justify earlier judgements. Through executive team meetings evidence samples were shared and discussed.

There has been significant staff turnover in recent years beginning in 2015 with the appointment of a new Principal, two new Deputy Princi-pals and three new Head Teachers.

In 2015 a predominately new executive engaged in a process of community consultation and data analysis and were able to complete a new 2015-2017 strategic school plan. This transformative plan has led to an improved culture shift within the school, outstanding growth results in NAPLAN and renewed curricula and extra-curricula programs. As a result in 2018 an upward trend in enrolments has been established and the school now enjoys increasing levels of community support.”

NBSC CROMER CAMPUS 2018 GOLF DAY

It is close to that time again when we are busy putting this year’s Golf day together. The date has been locked in as 13 November 2018 at the magnificent Cromer Golf course. We remind you to please put this in your diary. Last year there were a lot of disappointed people as they left it too late to put their entries in. Get in early as numbers are limited. Bookings will be as per last year through Flexi-schools and bookings will open at the end of September 2018.

Last year the day raised money to purchase new outdoor furniture for the school. To see the progress on this project please look on the P & C website, where we have posted pictures of the fantastic new furniture installed. Last year we had the second most successful golf day and we would love to exceed that result this year.

The day is founded on sponsorship, which we rely on both to make the day enjoyable and the fundraising a success. During the dinner last year there were a number of people who approached me to ask if they could get involved this year and as we are now in the process of putting this all together, we would like to invite you to get involved. We have various packages of sponsorships available, the options range from being the main sponsor for the day to per hole packages. To get involved, please contact Desmond by email on [email protected].

After the game we have a dinner along with the opportunity to win raffle prizes. For this to be successful we need donations. If you would like to donate prizes such as bottles of wine, box of chocolates, etc, please hand these in at the school canteen.

Look out for our next update.

Kind regards

VIETNAM WARMEMORIAL SERVICE

On the 17th of August, Marcus Moran and I were given the opportunity to make a speech at the Vietnam War Memorial.

We were also given the chance to hear a fantastic story of a young woman who was able to escape the Vietnam War and how she was able to survive the journey to Australia. Along with hearing this story we were able to watch the tribute to those who had fallen. After the Memorial we were able to talk to multiple veterans along with the Mayor during afternoon tea. It was a brilliant Memorial Service that allowed us to remember and pay our respects to all those who had fallen. Marcus and I were both very grateful to have been given the opportunity to see the Memorial Service and to give a speech.

The inaugural Integrated Studies STEM project, started in Term 2 and lead by Mr Cohn, is continuing

to evolve. The pilot program involves a small team of students from Years 7 and 8 designing a sustainable hanging wall garden, using and developing their skills in: Science, Technology and Maths. The students considered the use of recycled materials and developed some innovative prototypes using such things as plastic bottles, string and sticks. They have been highly engaged in refining their designs.

DEBATING SUCCESS AT CROMER

Year 7 Debating

BY TOM OLIVERNBSC Cromer Campus

HSIE Teacher

Congratulations to our Year 7 debating team who faced off against Pittwater High School on Friday 6th July, 2018. After months of giving up their free time to after school and lunchtime workshops, the team comprising of Orlando Lee, Charlotte Mace, Natalia Heinrich and Madison Maloy gave it their all to argue

‘single sex schools should not be banned’. In a heated back and forth competition, our team was victorious. This is an excellent achievement and an absolute feather in the cap of each of these students. Well done!!

The next step is to pitch their ideas to the Warringah Mall Bunning’s warehouse in an effort to obtain some materials through the School Liaison Program. Construction of the wall garden will commence this term.

SYDNEY JEWISH MUSEUM

The Big Dig 2018 was a great success! Our Year 7s didn’t hesitate to jump in and get

their hands dirty as they speculated what could be buried beneath the soil. Before they could begin, the students had to hypothesise what they expected to uncover during the archaeological dig. During the three days of hard work there were lots of surprises as students revealed bones and artefacts scattered around in what they discovered to be an ancient human sacrifice.

“I found that the students’ curiosity was infectious and everyone got involved trying to piece together what was laid below us” – Student Teacher.

The HSIE faculty is already looking forward to next year’s dig after witnessing the engagement and enthusiasm displayed by the Year 7s while applying their history skills.

In Term 2, Year 10 students travelled to the Sydney Jewish Museum to learn more about the experiences of the men, women and children

who lived in Nazi occupied parts of Europe during WWII. The students were able to hear testimony from a Hungarian Holocaust survivor who shared her experiences as a young girl. She went into hiding with her family to avoid Nazi occupation. They were also able to visit exhibits showing artefacts, including the belongings of the Nazi’s victims, and were taken on an informative guided tour. Finally, they paid their respects at the various memorials to those who perished.

The Year 10 students are to be congratulated for their maturity and the way in which they represented the school on the day.

School travel update Application information - June 2017

Information for parents, guardians and students Our school has partnered with Transport for NSW to use the new online School Portal for endorsing school travel applications. You are now able to manage all your school travel needs online including applying for school travel passes and tracking the status of your application. The application process has also been simplified so that a new or updated application for school travel passes is only needed when a student is:

applying for a school travel pass for the first time requesting an additional pass as a result of a new shared parental responsibility

situation (e.g. joint custody). changing school or campus changing home address receiving an expiry notification repeating a school year changing their name requesting a new transport operator.

This means students who are progressing to year 3 and year 7 only need to reapply if they are changing circumstances.

Students who are not residents and are temporarily in Australia can also provide their visa subclass number and exchange program (if prompted) when applying online, making the application and approval process much faster. Parents, guardians and students can apply or update their details online at:

www.transportnsw.info/school-students If you do not have access to the internet contact 131 500 for assistance.

NSW DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND COMMUNITIES LEARNING & ENGAGEMENT WWW.DEC.NSW.GOV.AU

Compulsory School Attendance

Information for parents

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.

What are my legal responsibilities?

Education in New South Wales is compulsory for all children between the ages of six years and below the minimum school leaving age. The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their children of compulsory school age are enrolled at, and regularly attend school, or, are registered with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards for homeschooling.

Once enrolled, children are required to attend school each day it is open for students.

The importance of arriving on time

Arriving at school and class on time:

• Ensures that students do not miss

out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day

• Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine

• Give students time to greet their friends before class

• Reduces classroom disruption

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents.

What if my child has to be away from school?

On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:

• being sick, or having an

infectious disease • having an unavoidable medical

appointment • being required to attend a

recognised religious holiday • exceptional or urgent family

circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)

Following an absence from school you must ensure that within 7 days you provide your child’s school with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 2 days, the school may contact you to discuss the absence.

Principals may decline to accept an explanation that you have provided if they do not believe the absence is in the best interest of your child. In these circumstances your child’s absence would be recorded as unjustified. When this happens the principal will discuss their decision with you and the reasons why.

Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation when frequent or long term absences are explained as being due to illness. Principals may also seek parental permission to speak with medical specialists to obtain information to collaboratively develop a health care plan to support your child. If the request is denied, the principal can record the absences as unjustified.

Travel

Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, discuss this with your child’s school principal. An Application for Extended Leave may need to be completed. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year.

In some circumstances students may be eligible to enrol in distance education for travel periods over 50 school days. This should be discussed with your child’s school principal.

NSW DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND COMMUNITIES LEARNING & ENGAGEMENT WWW.DEC.NSW.GOV.AU

If a student misses as little as 8 days in a school term, by the end of primary school they’ll have missed over a year of school.

My child won’t go to school. What should I do?

You should contact the principal as soon as possible to discuss the issue and ask for help. Strategies to help improve attendance may include a referral to the school’s learning and support team or linking your child with appropriate support networks. The principal may seek further support from the Home School Liaison Program to develop an Attendance Improvement Plan.

What might happen if my child continues to have unacceptable absences?

It is important to understand that the Department of Education and Communities may be required to take further action where children of compulsory school age have recurring numbers of unexplained or unjustified absences from school.

Some of the following actions may be undertaken:

• Compulsory Schooling

Conferences

You may be asked, along with your child, to attend a Compulsory Schooling Conference. The conference will help to identify the supports your child may need to have in place so they attend school regularly. The school, parents and agencies will work together to develop an agreed plan (known as Undertakings) to support your child’s attendance at school.

• Application to the Children’s Court

– Compulsory Schooling Order

If your child’s attendance at school remains unsatisfactory the Department

may apply to the Children’s Court for a Compulsory Schooling Order. The Children’s Court magistrate may order a Compulsory Schooling Conference to be convened.

• Prosecution in the Local Court

School and Department staff remain committed to working in partnership with you to address the issues which are preventing your child’s full participation at school. In circumstances where a breach of compulsory schooling orders occurs further action may be taken against a parent in the Local Court. The result of court action can be the imposition of a community service order or a fine.

What age can my child leave school?

All New South Wales students must complete Year 10 or its equivalent. After Year 10, and up until they reach 17 years of age, there are a range of flexible options for students to complete their schooling.

Working in Partnership

The Department of Education and Communities recognises that working collaboratively with students and their families is the best way to support the regular attendance of students at school.

We look forward to working in partnership with you to support your child to fulfil their life opportunities.
