Purple Class

6 NOVEMBER 2017

This term, we welcome Aayushi to Purple Class. She has settled into Cromehurst School well and is already enjoying walks in the community, swimming with her classmates and maths groups with Rainbow and Purple Class. This term our topic is Summertime Fun! This topic encompasses all things summer including our favourite activities and foods. It also has a strong focus on sun and water safety. Purple Class join Rainbow Class in the Cromehurst pool every Tuesday. In these lessons, we focus on moving safely around the pool, entering and leaving the pool safely and how to have fun in the water whilst being safe. As the weather gets hotter, we have also been discussing how to stay safe in the sun. Using our special Purple Class beach area, Jessica, Ashton, Aliya and Aayushi have been practicing Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide before playing in the sunshine. Slip on a shirt Slop on sun cream Slap on a hat Seek shade Slide on Sunnies …. It’s as

simple as that! During Science, Purple Class have been exploring hot and cold. As Christmas approaches, we will be looking into Christmas around the world and how their traditions differ according to their hot or cold climates. Rebecca, Jessica and Natalie

Principal’s Message

Welcome to week five

We are fast approaching the middle of the term and the school calendar is becoming very busy. This week we are creating draft class compositions for 2018. This process is always very involved and many factors are taken into consideration including chronological age, gender mix, physical and health care needs as well as friendships and learning needs. As there is another placement panel in week eight the numbers may not be final and there may need to be changes later in the term. Parents will be informed before the end of the year of which class their child is in and the staff who will be working with their child. All decisions made in regard to classes are made in the best interest of students’ educational and social needs.

I have made reference to the new guidelines for therapy services delivered at school which the Department of Education released this year. With the launch of the NDIS there has been a dramatic increase in the number of external therapy providers wishing to work with students at Cromehurst. At Cromehurst we are committed to developing partnerships with families and services to enhance the life-long learning and improved outcomes for all of our students. The primary role of school is education programs and the implementation of required syllabus content, however we recognise that certain therapy or consultancy services may assist students to better achieve these outcomes and provide invaluable advice to teaching staff. Consideration will be given to approval for these services at Cromehurst School following confirmation that there is compliance with legislative requirements and DoE policy. These consideration include the following:

Supervision of students and service

providers

Timing of service provision

Resources and suitable space

(It is a Departmental requirement that all external contractors working with children complete the Child Protection Awareness Training. This is an e-learning module accessed through the internet at www.det.nsw.edu.au/proflearn/cpat. A copy of the certificate of completion should be provided to the school)

Health Care training relevant to

student receiving therapy (eg; If the student has anaphylaxis the provider must complete the publicly available ASCIA anaphylaxis training accessed at https://etraining.allergy.org.au/login/index.php) IF the therapy is provided in water based activities the provider must have a first aid and CPR certificate)

Most of the preceding requirements have always been in place, however the process of requesting to deliver therapy services has been more informal. Given the increase in the number of therapist requests it may not always be possible to accommodate all requests at once and it may be necessary to allocate delivery of services on a rotating term by term schedule. A summary of the procedures for 2018 are as follows;

All request to be sent to the school for

consideration in writing to Cromehurst-s.school@det.nsw.edu.au and provide the following information:

Contact details of the organisation

they are representing, their position and manager’s name

Purpose of the program and types of

activities to be undertaken

Number of sessions proposed and

duration of sessions

Consent from the family

Working with Children Check

documentation

Facilities requested (if any)

Personal Indemnity, Public Liability

and Workers Compensation Insurance documentation

Evidence of Mandatory training

requirements including Anaphylaxis e-training, emergency care and child protection awareness training

All requests will be considered at the

discretion of the Principal

If approved the classroom teacher will

liaise with the therapist/service provider for a suitable time to visit within the context of their teaching timetable

If not approved the therapist/service

provider will need to liaise with the family to make alternative arrangements

All necessary documentation will be

provided and copied by the school prior to the service commencing

If approved the Principal or nominee

will provide a general induction to the provider outlining protocols for entry and exit, emergency procedures, location of facilities, first aid and incident reporting, supervision requirements, privacy laws and code of conduct.

Approved visiting therapists will sign a

contract with the school outlining times and duration of sessions.

I have attached a copy of our checklist for therapy requests which will be provided to visiting therapists over the next few weeks. I thank you for your understanding in this matter, we will endeavour to accommodate all requests within the constraints of time and resources.

As mentioned previously I am taking Long Service Leave from next week until Wednesday, 13 December. Janice Crocker will be relieving as Principal during my absence. I will see you all at the Christmas Concert.

Fourth Term is always a busy time in Art and Music classes as students are preparing for the end of year concert. The theme for this year’s performances is ‘Hello from Around the World’ and each class will perform a dance from a different country. The pictures in this newsletter show Green class practising Zorba the Greek, Pink Class doing a Chinese Umbrella Dance, White performing a Mexican Hat Dance, Purple and Rainbow pretending to be sleeping lions in Africa and Sofie from Blue class doing a fine impersonation of Gretl Von Trapp. Aqua Class will be going to Britain, Orange Class to Rio, Yellow Class to Australia and Red opening the concert singing Hello from Around the World with many flags.

Later this week I will be sending out a note to most classes asking parents to supply some very simple items for your child’s costume.

Apart from concert preparations, the senior classes have been concentrating on a ‘Water’ theme this term recreating Monet’s water lily garden, manufacturing a water cycle and water pouring from a tap in the form of pumpkin seeds. Robyn Chan has created a wonderful cover for the concert program which is shown in the pictures in this newsletter.

The junior classes have been working on the theme of ‘Summertime Fun’ and ‘Sun Safety’ and they have

created pictures of sun, water and tropical fruits.

We had a fantastic whole-school excursion to Macquarie Centre to go ice skating on Thursday, 26

October. Thanks to Variety for putting on this fantastic experience for our students, and thanks to all staff

and family members who attended. We had a very exc-ice-ting morning on the ice.

The Lions Club of Bondi have very kindly given our school tickets to the ‘World Festival of Magic’ performances taking place at The Hordern Pavilion at Moore Park at 11.30am and 2.00pm on Saturday, 11 November 2017.
