CRL-U.S. ALUMINUMUNIT-GLAZED SYSTEMSADVANCING THE ENVELOPEAs the design and construction industry continuesto innovate and find ways to increase efficiency whilestreamlining labor and fabrication costs,CRL-U.S. Aluminum has emerged with an innovativesolution for installing commercial storefronts and windowwalls. Our Unit-Glazed Systems allow glaziers to fabricatein their own shop environments, reducing field labor byas much as 50% and accelerate the installation process. This translates into substantial time and cost savings, more competitive quotes, and higher profit margins.

COMPLETE SUPPORT We take pride in providing customers with outstandingtechnical support from start to finish. Our highly trained,CSI CDT Certified technical support team has experiencewith both small and large-scale project applications, andunderstands the importance of providing reliableinformation and estimates early on to more effectivelycollaborate with project stakeholders. Our commitmentto architects, contractors, and installers is evident in ourstrong attention to meeting and exceeding expectations, because when you thrive so do we.

MANUFACTURING AND DISTRIBUTIONCRL-U.S. Aluminum’s ISO9001: 2008 certifiedmanufacturing and testing facilities provide the highestquality systems with short lead times to comply withstrict project deadlines. Our products are tested andproven to perform at the highest industry standards incompliance with AAMA, ASTM, and NFRC criteria.

We apply more than 50 years of experience to the designand manufacturing of our products, and that translatesinto exceptional quality and proven performance. Couplethat with a distribution network 43 locations strong and aglobal footprint which exceeds 3 million sq ft., you’ve gota single source manufacturer delivering a level of qualityand lead times that others simply cannot compete with.

REDUCED FIELD LABOR

Generally, glazing contractors utilize 25% of their time in a shop environment and 75%out in the field. Adopting a pre-glaze fabrication method over a traditional approach willdecrease the amount of time spent at the project site to 40% and allow for 60% ofproduction to take place in the shop, saving a minimum of 20% - 25% of labor expense.

VASTLY INCREASED FIELD PRODUCTION

With more pre-glaze and unitized system fabrication done in the shop and transported to the field, glaziers have the ability to work faster and get more done at the project site.

INCREASED QUALITY CONTROL AND EFFICIENCY

Assembling units in the shop allows glazing contractors to work in a controlledenvironment and efficiently monitor attendance, work assignments, along with the quantity and quality of production.

This setting allows for improved fabrication and installation of all required setting blocks, water deflectors, end dams, and gasketing elements. Each of these components arereadily available in glass shops, allowing glaziers improved supervision and control withless disruption than may be encountered at the job site.

INCREASED FACTORY PRODUCTION THROUGH ASSEMBLY LINE TECHNIQUES

In the way that Henry Ford introduced and perfected manufacturing through anassembly line, glazing contractors can teach less qualified individuals specific tasksand fabrication methods that will perfect and increase production.

INCREASED COMPETITIVENESS ON BOTH SMALLER AND LARGER JOBS

Before targeting more large-scale projects, it is important to first widen your technicalscope. This will sharpen your ability to accommodate higher degrees of difficulty andensure that you remain competitive.

With pre-glaze and unitized systems your ability to compete for jobs is reliant on yourefficiency in the factory and the field. These fabrication methods significantly lower yourexposure to job site risks where your labor dollars can be mismanaged through loss ofproduction control.

CURTAIN WALL AESTHETICS WITH WINDOW WALL LOGISTICS

Our innovative Slab Edge Covers will give your project a striking façade with aseamless curtain wall aesthetic, minus all of the structural and performance obstaclesthat come with it.

PROJECT CASE STUDY

CHALLENGE:Renovating an active medical centeroccupied by patients with compromisedimmune systems along with numerousdisruptions due to construction wasalready a challenge. However, finding aglass window wall solution with a rapidinstallation process that wouldn’t disruptpatients, staff, visitors, or operations wasa major goal for the project.

SOLUTION:CRL-U.S. Aluminum’s Unit-GlazedSystems assisted with the quick andeasy installation of a new window wallfor the sky-high project. The Unit GlazingSystems significantly improved the lookand quality of the window wall withoutbeing disruptive or harmful to patientsand staff during (and after) construction.

CRL-U.S. Aluminum’s Unit-Glazed TT601Top Notch Window Wall System playedan integral role in accelerating theinstallation of the building’s new glassfaçade. Once the units were deliveredto the project site, each section wasinstalled in a matter of minutes thanks toU.S. Aluminum’s Unit Split Mullions andGravity Loaded Sill Flashing. These toolsaided the installer with snapping eachUnit-Glazed section together in just threesimple steps. "The system was welldesigned and functioned perfectly,” saysRobert Malone, President of RangerSpecialized Glass, Inc., glazingcontractor for the project. “The systemdid not leak and installed very quickly. It turned into a very profitable job forRanger.”

TRANSPORTING GLAZED UNITSMost glazing contractors will utilize steel “A” frame racksfrom the local glass supplier to transport and lift the unitsonto the floors. Another typical method is to place theunits in crates and lift them onto each floor. Crates canbe made to be reusable allowing them to be broken down, transported back to the fabrication facility, and used again.

EQUIPMENTSpecial equipment will help the contractor install the unitsin the fastest way possible. Typically a contractor shouldinstall from the outside on jobs of six stories or less. The contractor should install from the inside on buildingstaller than six stories. When installing from the outside ahoisting device (such as a Beta Max or Vella lift) shouldbe used. The units would be picked directly from thedelivery trailer. When installing from the inside, a modifiedelectric pallet jack is usually the best option.CRL-U.S. Aluminum can help in providing or sourcing theequipment required for the contractor to obtain maximumefficiency.

WHEN TO ORDER MATERIALSThe earlier the glazing contractor starts the process offabrication and glazing, the smoother the entire processwill be. They will be better able to build in the desiredlevel of quality rather than be rushed for time by a tightschedule. The contractor should look at being severalfloors ahead of the job in their fabrication and glazingprocess.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How do you keep the glass from “walking”in the glass pocket when shipping to the job site?

A: CRL-U.S. Aluminum ships a low durometer block(shore 40 to 45 hardness) to allow for wedging theglass below the horizontals and to wedge the glassin the glass pockets. This block stabilizes the glassand prevents shifting within the pockets.

Q: Will the contractor need to get on the outsideof the building to seal the system?

A: The contractor will typically need to get on the outsideof the building to seal their perimeter joint. When usinga head can, the contractor may reduce the requirementfor exterior sealing of the system to just the jambcondition.

Q: What if the General Contractorwill not “Guarantee” the opening?

A: The general contractor should guarantee the openingdimensions as the contractor must order glass andhave it available to close up the building. The contractorshould impress upon the contractor the speed inclosing up the building this installation method offersand the benefit to the contractor. The contractor willbe able to start the interior finishes much earlier onthe schedule than they would otherwise be able tostart. This will improve the general conditions andreduce cost. Everyone on the construction teamsaves money when the building is closed up quickly.
