Do They Do?

Objectives

1.To define producers, consumers and decomposers (knowledge)

2.To classify organisms into producers, consumers and decomposers (comprehension)

3.To demonstrate knowledge of producers, consumers and decomposers in an ecosystem handout activity and use findings to construct a bar graph. (application)

Objective 1

To define producers, consumers and decomposers

Using laptop computers in groups, students will access filamentality and use appropriate link to define key words in this lesson.

They will write down definitions in their writer’s notebooks.

Student Performance Based Product

Producer- Plants are called producers. This is because they produce their own food!

Consumer-Animals are called consumers. This is because they cannot make their own food, so they need to consume (eat) plants and/or animals.

Decomposer-Bacteria and fungi are decomposers. They eat decaying matter - dead plants and animals and in the process they break them down and decompose them. When that happens, they release nutrients and mineral salts back into the soil - which then will be used by plants!

Objective 2To classify organisms into producers, consumers

and decomposers

Using a web graphic organizer and various animal cutouts, in groups of 4 students will classify 4 organisms into correct categories

Each student will copy down graphic organizer format and insert their group’s organisms into the web graphic organizer in their writer’s notebook.

Each group will attach their organism pictures on class graphic organizer and share their findings with the rest of the class.

Objective 3

To demonstrate knowledge of producers, consumers and decomposers in an ecosystem handout activity and use findings to construct a graph

Students will locate and correctly classify all organisms in “The Forest Search” handout by circling producers green, consumers red and decomposers brown.

Afterwards, students will collect data on how many producers, consumers and decomposers they found and using Excel they will create a bar graph showing the number of each type of organism in the handout
