this course is designed for specialists in critical care (intensivists) and emergency medicine, anesthesiologists, hospitalists, internists, surgeons, nurses, and respiratory therapists. its purpose is to provide recent advances and state-of-the-art information pertinent to critical care medicine and trauma. Lecturers will discuss updated information regarding the pathophysiology and management of disorders commonly encountered in the practice of trauma and the intensive care unit. An optional workshop is offered for those interested in fiberoptic and advanced airway management techniques.

the conference is presented by the Department of Medicine, Division of pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and the Department of Anesthesia and perioperiative Medicine, and is sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

An attendee completing this course should be able to describe:

n Current pathophysiology and diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia;

n Limitations of plain film radiography in the intensive care unit;

n Current approaches to pain and sedation in the intensive care unit;

n Optimal use of low tidal volume ventilation in critically ill patients;

n Appropriate use of noninvasive ventilation for acute respiratory failure;

n Hypothermia for brain protection;

n Approach to acute renal failure in the intensive care unit;

n goals of “early goal-directed therapy” for septic patients;

n New ACLS guidelines;

n principles of fluid resuscitation;

n Basic approach to the trauma patient;

n Disaster response;

n presentation of necrotizing fasciitis;

n Evaluation and treatment of the patient with acute liver failure;

n rapidly fatal infections in the intensive care unit.
