3.1 Promotion of Research

3.1.1 Does the institution have recognized research center/s of the affiliating

University or any other agency/organization?

There are 5 Research Centers in the college. They are Commerce,

Mathematics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology.

There are six Research Groups working in the Campus. They are

(1) Conservation Research Group

(2) Toxicological research group

(3) Research group on Algal studies and

(4) Cochin Heritage Study Centre

(5) Material Science Research Group

(6) Fuzzy Research Group

Four departments have already applied to the University for establishing

research centres. They are

(1) Physics

(2) Management

(3) English

(4) Aquaculture.

3.1.2 Does the Institution have a research committee to monitor and address

The research committee meets at least once in every six months to discuss

various matters associated to research activities in departments. The committee

regularly assesses the research potential of faculty members and tries to

facilitate their research and academic extension activities.

The major recommendations of the Committee are

To start a multidisciplinary Journal in the various branches of

science

To monitor and evaluate proposed projects (both major and minor)

before sending them to concerned funding authority.

To give proper orientation on preparation of the project proposal

and also tries to give information on various funding agencies and

their funding procedures etc.

To help the eligible faculty members to obtain research guide-ship

from the university and also to enable them to supervise good

number of research students in each department

To encourage and support new faculty members to apply for fresh

research projects with an objective to have maximum number of

major projects from each department

To design interdisciplinary projects for faculty

To start new research centers in departments of Physics,

Aquaculture, English and Management

To promote formulation of multidisciplinary projects in

collaboration with DBT, DST and neighboring research Institutes.

Provide assistance for filing the patents, undertaking consultancy

works etc.

Establish active collaborations with leading Scientists/ Experts to

enhance the research potential of our institute

To encourage students to participate and present research papers in

seminars and conferences

To facilitate a centralized Research lab with sophisticated

instruments which can be accessed by faculties of various

departments

Organize general workshop on Research ethics, funding

opportunities, research methodology etc.

Keep updated with the frontier thrust research areas and needs of

the industry to encourage the faculties to work in the respective

fields,

To invite Scientists and Eminent personalities including Nobel

Laureates to interact with and motivate the research students.

Accordingly

A committee was formed to launch Albertian Journal of Sciences (a

multidisciplinary Journal) and Albertian Journal of Chemical

Sciences

Albertian Journal of Literature has already been published by the

English Department.

Applications are forwarded to Mahatma Gandhi University to

obtain sanction for Research Centres in the departments of Physics,

Aquaculture, English and Management.

Proposals for Major and Minor projects are already sent to the

concerned funding agencies after scrutiny by the research

committee.

Students presented research papers in seminars.

Collaborative (multidisciplinary) projects were designed.

Centralized Interdisciplinary Instrumentation laboratory facility has

been established.

Scientists / Experts visited the institute and gave guidance in

various aspects of research work.

The DBT schemes and DST Schemes are functioning well.

3.1.3 What are the measures taken by the institution to facilitate smooth

progress and implementation of research schemes/ projects?

A centralized research lab to promote multidisciplinary and advanced

research in the institution has been set up. The proposed lab shall install

advanced instruments like FTIR, HPLC. UV-VISIBLE spectrophotometer

(under DST-FIST scheme) including certain other imported machines to

facilitate more research activities.

Information regarding the various funding agencies and their mode of

invitation for research proposals, last date of submission of proposal, method

of selection by the agency etc. was duly delivered to the faculty in various

disciplines to encourage them to apply for minor as well as major research

projects.

Faculty members without research qualifications were allowed to apply for

faculty development programme to obtain Ph D in their respective fields.

Faculty with research publications and projects were awarded bonus points in

their annual self-appraisal scheme.

Full autonomy is given to the principle investigator in matters related to the

research projects.

The funds are released immediately as and when it is received from the

respective funding agencies.

Technology support like training in research related software (such as SPSS,

MATLAB) is given to teachers.

The UGC cell helps the staff members in auditing the account related to the

projects carried out by staff members.

3.1.4 What are the efforts made by the institution in developing scientific

temper and research culture and aptitude among students?

The college has the following facilities for developing scientific temper among

students

Arranged Talk by eminent scientists and scholars

Visit to major research labs

Students enjoy the freedom to select the topic of their

dissertation work and are duly oriented to execute the project

work

Student were encouraged to present their findings in seminars

General classes on research methodology and application of

statistical tools were also given

Every department has a committee to monitor and evaluate

the student’s project.

Science Day Exhibitions are held to motivate our students as

well as students from neighbouring schools.

Full- fledged Renewable Energy lab (with Solar thermal, Solar

Crime Mapping in collaboration with NSS and local Panchayaths

Coconut Enumeration in collaboration with Kerala Coconut

3.1.7 Provide details of prioritized research areas and the expertise available

with the institution.

Area of research

Aquaculture - conservation biology of inland aquatic systems and endemic

species- Conservative Research Group (CRG) is a research team of the

department comprising of eminent scientists and students actively pursuing

research in this field. CRG has many international and national level

publications to its credit annually. They are running several research projects

sanctioned by various agencies. The College owns an Aqua farm in

Kadamakudy village being the site for experimentation in modern aquaculture

practices.

Mathematics – Department of mathematics has a long tradition of research

ever since the period of Rev. Fr. Joseph Konnully ( author of Konnully’s

theory), an eminent and well known mathematician who has contributed

Konnully’s Theorem which is in the Curricullum of many Universities

worldwide. This legacy has been continued by his successors. Currently, a

number of teachers are actively involved in research work related to fuzzy and

its applications.

Commerce – Department of Commerce is known for its research contributions

of eminent faculty members. It has produced the highest number of Doctorates

in the University. At present 33 research scholars are doing their research work

in the department and their focus areas are Investments, Commercial Banking,

Marketing, Financial Management and tourism.

Zoology- in 2005 department of Zoology was recognized as a research centre of

Mahatma Gandhi University. Aquatic Toxicology and assessment of

Biodiversity are the major area of research conducted in this department. The

researchers of Aquaculture are also benefited from this research centre.

Chemistry – focus areas of research in this department are Polymer science,

marine environmental chemistry and Analytical chemistry. The Department is a

recognized research center of Mahatma Gandhi University. The department

was awarded FIST lab by the department of Science and Technology, Govt. of

India, and possesses advanced research facility.

Botany – major areas of investigations are Phycology, Taxonomy and

Environmental Biology molecular biology and algal studies. The research

centre has a collaborative research with Melbourne University, Australia.

Physics - Faculties in Physics Department are actively involved in research

work in different aspects of material science with due importance to

Photovoltaics, nanotechnology and crystal growth. Research work in

astrophysics has also been initiated in the department. The support and

guidance from ISRO and VSSC Scientists are helping our Space Science

students.

Similarly other departments have their own areas of interest for research.

3.1.8 Enumerate the efforts of the institution in attracting researchers of

eminence to visit the campus and interact with teachers and students?

The policy of our institution is to organize maximum number of expert talks in

various disciplines with an aim to boost academic standards of both faculty

and students. In this regard due instructions are given to all heads of the

departments and their colleagues. Hence, departments regularly conduct talks

by prominent resource persons from different research institutions in India a s

3.1.9 What percentage of the faculty has utilized Sabbatical Leave for

research activities? How has the provision contributed to improve the

quality of research and imbibe research culture on the campus?

Currently there are 24 of the faculty members who are doing their part-time

research. It comes to nearly 30%. Two of our faculty members have availed the

faculty Improvement Program (FIP) to complete their research work. They

completed their Ph D work during this time and also continuing research work

and published papers related to their work.

3.1.10 Provide details of the initiatives taken up by the institution in creating

awareness/ advocating /transfer of relative findings of research of the

institution and e lsewhere to students and community (lab to land)

Our institution gives special emphasis on academic extension activities. Various

departments conduct awareness classes and outreach programs to transfer the

We have received major research support from DST-FIST Scheme ( One Crore) and

DBT ( 40 Lakhs) amount is already been utilized with the additional funding support

of the management.

3.2.2 Is there a provision in the institution to provide seed money to the faculty

for research? If so, specify the amount disbursed and the percentage of the

faculty that has availed the facility in the last four years?

Yes. Once the project is sanctioned, the sponsoring agency provides 80% of the

total amount proposed projects which are given to the investigator as and when

it is received from the UGC. Approximately 43% of the faculty members has

availed this facility.

3.2.3 What are the financial provisions made available to support student

research projects by students?

Right now the college is enjoying the STAR COLLEGE status awarded by the

Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. In this scheme there is provision

to extend financial assistance to student projects.

College is encouraging Students to obtain student fellowships for project work

offered by agencies like KCSTE.

Departments encourage students to attend the seminars and conferences and

present papers of their research work. Financial assistance like registration fees

and travel allowances are incurred by the college.

the campus community through announcement, Website and also News Letters.

3.5 Consultancy

3.5.1 Give details of the systems and strategies for establishing institute-

industry interface?

Career and Placement Cell, Research Committee and Academic Council are

the systems for establishing the institute – industry relationship. MoU are

signed according to the need of the students and courses. The feedback from

the stake holders also helps in deciding the strategies for obtaining the

necessary MoUs.

3.5.2 What is the s tated policy of the institutio n to promote

consultancy? How is the available expertise advocated and publicized?

The management promotes consultancy for its staff members and

departments. The consultant fee is shared in the ratio 2:1 between the

consultant and institution respectively. The amount received from

consultation is spent for further development of the research. The Albertian

Committee for Consultancy has already been formed for sharing the

expertise available among the community. Classes on vegetable cult ivation,

Biogas plants, Training for Mathematics Olympiad, Human Rights are few

of the activities among the community. Enough publicity is obtained for

these activities through News Papers and students.

3.5.3 How does the institution encourage the staff to utilize their expertise and

available facilities for consultancy services?

The College provides space and time for the faculty. In order to have an

Each Socially Oriented Programme is having a coordinator and a team which

looks into the involvement of the members of the programme. Comprehensive

evaluation report prepared by tutor helps in tracking the students about their

involvement in social movements. The participation seen in the various

programmes also give a concrete idea about the involvement of the students

and thereby moulding the student to be a good citizen.

performance and quality of the institution?

The overall performance of the institution emphasizing on its quality is ensured

by the collaborated efforts of the Heads of the departments and the Stake

holders to ensure that the objectives are set for the coming academic year and

For the Holistic Development of the students, community service is a must.

in extension activities including participation in NSS, NCC, YRC and other

National/ International agencies?

Students are informed about the extension activities of different clubs and

agencies through the College Calendar. It is compulsory for the students to take

part in the activities of at least two clubs of their choice. The NSS, NCC

Officers attend the orientation programme of the College for new comers and

enrolls candidates. Motivated students are encouraged to join NSS and NCC

though only limited seats are available.

3.6.6 Give details on social surveys, research or extension work (if any)

undertaken by the college to ensure social justice and empowe r

s tudents from under-privilege d and vulnerable sections of society?

NSS regularly conducts social surveys among under privileged and vulnerable

sections of the society during their camps every year. (Eg: Crime Mapping)

Department conducts surveys. (Eg: Chemistry department conducted survey on

water samples in the Cheranelloore Panchayath)

Collaborative Research with Government and other agencies. (Eg: Economics

department is having a project sanctioned from UGC on conducting survey

related to Palm tree growth)

3.6.7 Reflecting on objectives and expected outcomes of the extension activities

organized by the institution, comment on how they complement students’

academic learning experience and specify the values and skills inculcated.

The students feel the need of the extension activities since they are the active

participants in the programme. The skills inculcated are varied as they create a

sustainable practices of the institution leading to superior performance resulting

in successful outcome in terms of generating knowledge which will be useful

for the students as well as the community in terms of timely approach to various

problems, serving the society will become a priority in the minds of the student.

The institution takes up the responsibility to enable faculty to undertake projects

Detail on the initiatives of the institution that encourage community

participation in its activities?

The Various departments of the college engage in different types of Social

extension activities. The departments organise lunch for the poor homes on a

weekly basis. They ensure that the students actively participate in the Blood

donation programs and the hospitals send the people who require the same to

the college. The students also with the help of the faculty arrange funds to visit

the poor houses. Also the campus is open to the neighbourhood schools to

visit the museums and to actively participate in the programs of the College.

being conducted regularly at the college. Tie ups with the Navadharshan and

program. Widows meet was conducted at the college to enrich them with

various activities that would bring a meaning to their lives also the institution

took keen efforts to conduct the inaugural function at the College to assist the

Child Protection Centre promoted by Janaseva Sisubhavan. MoU’s have also

Faculty members have undergone trainings in research methods at various

research laboratories like CIFT, CMFRI, NIO and CUSAT

Researchers in science subjects regularly do experimental and analytical

work in STIC situated in CUSAT campus, KalamasseryEg. Atomic

emission spectroscopy, Xray crystallography and SEM.

Faculty members design project proposals in consultation with scientists

serving in nearby research institutes

Research scholars and PG students from neighboring institutes are allowed

to share our lab facilities and expertise of faculty

3.7.5 How many of the linkages / collaborations have actually resulted in formal

MoUs and agreements ? List out the activities and beneficiaries and cite

examples (if any) of the established linkages that enhanced and/or

facilitated –

The College have obtained 8 MoU’s which resulted after the collaborative

work and also 9 collaborative agreements at present.

a) Curriculum development /enrichment

There are 3 MoU’s and one collaborative agreement with foreign

universities. They are

1. South China Normal University

2. School of Botany, University of Melbourne

3. Institute for sufficiency economy research, Chiang Mai

University, Thailand

4. University of Wisconsin, Madison

and students visit the institution for collaborative studies and research. Through this

our students also come to know about the different developments in those fields. For

example aquaponics research.

b) Internship/ On-the-job training

Already the College has one international internship program with Wiscon

University, Madison. The Chemistry department is also having an intership

program with Spices Board, Ernakulam. Many final year students make use of the

On-the-job training program conducted at Quality Evaluation Laboratory, Spice

Board. The college also had an MOU with SIFY Ltd. Chennai for providing

training on ‘supply chain management’, for the students. Other example for

Internship/ On-the-job training is that with CIFNET in which students are learned

fish processing and marketing techniques.

c) Summer placement

Project works are done by the MBA students at different institutes during the

semester Break. Students of Space Science do project work at VSSC,

Thiruvananthapuram, SAC, Bangalore etc.

d) Faculty exchange and professional development

Professional Development Committee takes care of updating the latest technology

available in teaching for the staff members. They also bring experts for

interacting with staff members in the field of innovative teaching. Office staff

members are often given training in latest IT skills.

e) Research

The department of Chemistry is having an MOU with AXIOM analytical and

research centre, cochin, for cooperation in the field of research and technology

transfer.

The department of Fisheries and Aquaculture is established an MOU with

‘PEHAL Society, Aligarh, India’ for the promotion of research and outreach in

biodiversity conservation and management. It also aims at research on illegal

wildlife trade and its mitigation and education and awareness programmes for

tribes and forest communities.

f) Consultancy

The College has an IGNOU Centre, which is one of the biggest centers of South

India. This is one of the main revenue earners through consultancy for the

College.

g) Extension

Each department has its own extension programs depending on the areas of

interest. Some of them have even converted it to MoU. For example,

Mathematics Department have and MoU with Navadarsan, an NGO working

among the backward student community in Ernakulam. Department helps the

students selected by Navadarsan in Mathematics Training and also preparing

them for Mathematics Olympiad. The Chemistry department has a Collaborative

agreement with Kerala State Pollution Control Board for analysis of Quality-

Pollution parameters for water, waste water and solid waste sample.

h) Publication

Some of the books published by the College staff members have an agreement

with the respective publishing agencies. For example Dr. Appu Jacob of English

Department published a translation of the book titled “Ardha Narishwaran”

under the agreement with DC Books Publishing Agency.

i ) Student Placement

There are few companies who regularly visit St. Albert’s College for placement

even if we do not have a formal agreement with them.

j) Twinning programmes

Under the present University system, twinning programs are not possible to

conduct. But the College has an IGNOU Centre which allows the students to take

more than one program for studies, if eligible.

k) Introduction of new courses

The starting of M Sc Space Science is the result of constant discussion with many

scientists and researchers specially from ISRO. The new B Voc programs

introduced recently is also after the consultation with industrialists from fields

like alternative energy sources and logistics.

l) Student exchange

At present, the College doesn’t have any student exchange program but an MoU

signed with Wisconsin University enables students from that university to visit

our campus for sharing knowledge.

m) Any other

The College has MoUs with India Sea Foods for project work, agreement with

Travancore Cochin Chemicals for training of students are some of the other

agreements that College have.

3.7.6 Detail on the systemic efforts of the institution in planning, establishing

and implementing the initiatives of the linkages/ collaborations.

The meetings and initiatives of Stake holders, Research Groups and Committee

for Consultancy results in getting information about the necessary linkages/

Collaborations and their relevance to the College. Their recommendations are

consolidated and forwarded to the Managing Council for approval. Once it is

obtained a person will be put in charge for obtaining the necessary linkages/

Collaborations.

Any other relevant information regarding Research, Consultancy and

Extension which the college would like to include.

Conservation Research Group of St. Albert’s College was selected as the one

among the top 10 Colleges Saving Our Endangered Species by an

international agency in 2012.

Each department has its own extension program other than the common one

the College has.

The College is the second best in the city in Science, Commerce and Arts also

ranks in the best 50 in India in Commerce.
