Follow your destiny. A lesson taught to children at a young age, and a lesson that Cy Parry clearly listened to. We met Cy in Wadebridge, a town he regards as his “adoptive home”. Originating from the welsh valleys, his musical upbringing consisted of learning the guitar with his brother, inspired by the work of the big hitters at the times, The Beatles and The Shadows. At a younger age, Cy dreamed of his music making it into the big time- but nothing ever really came to it. He wrote and recorded demos of songs, and then when it “became clear” to him that he wasn’t to be the next best superstar, they were left to gather dust, not to be touched for another thirty years. Fast forward to the new millennium. After abandoning his dreams of the big time, Cy had decided to take a different career path- into teaching. After hanging up the whiteboard marker pen, Cy’s life would take a turn that would shape the next decade, and bring him back to the dreams he held thirty years ago. After losing his wife to a divorce, Cy descended into a state of depression, being diagnosed with Bi-polar disorder. However- things would change once again in an event that is usually reserved for fairytales. He ran into a parent of a student he used to teach, and they got talking. Further meetups would result in them becoming a couple, and eventually, they got married. Meeting Annie is an event Cy regards as “the best thing to ever happen to him”. This was the spark in Cy’s resurgence- he overcame his demons and sparked him back into something he had loved doing but hadn’t done for many years. Songwriting. After digging out the old demos and lyrics, the foundations for “Songs from a Previous Existence” were laid. Cy describes “Songs from a Previous Existence” as the words from the time he went through difficulties, and life before he met his current wife. The albums theme explore many different issues all close to Cy’s heart- whether it be the deaths of three students while he was a teacher at Wadebridge Primary School and how he wished he could take their pain away, to his fight with Bi-Polar disorder, or whether it be a song written thirty years ago about the time he met an “Old Flame”.
