The Terrace Crime Stoppers Program was impressed by the amount of quality entries in a recent contest directed at local youth. Kids in grades 7 – 9 submitted posters while grades 10 –12 needed to create a commercial advertisement. The winning entries received an iPad just in time for Christmas. A big thanks to CompuSmart for donating the iPads at cost. What a way to cap off 2012!

South Okanagan Similkameen Crime Stoppers hosted their 12th Annual Golf Tournament on June 2, 2012, at the Penticton Golf & Country Club. We were again fortunate to have blue skies and lots of sunshine. There was an increase in attendance this year, as we hosted over 120 golfers. All participants enjoyed a day of good golf, good food and lots of fun! We can’t wait to have everyone back for this year’s event coming up on June 1st. Golfers of all skill levels are welcome in this fun tournament. Come out and enjoy the camaraderie and sample our hospitality!

South Okanagan Similkameen Crime Stoppers again entered the Santa Claus parade in downtown Penticton on December 1st, 2012. Thousands lined the streets on a cold night hoping to catch a glimpse of Santa and his helpers.

A new member was elected at our first board meeting of 2013. Doug Nordick will be sure to complement our existing board with his knowledge and enthusiasm.

The board had to rethink the strategy of Crime Stoppers. What is the purpose of the organization and what is it that we can accomplish? The goal of Crime Stoppers is to bring in tips to help the RCMP investigate cases.

In order to do that, Crime Stoppers has to make the public aware of the purpose. We have to work within the confines of our budget to put up signs and deliver brochures to businesses. We need to put together a professional package to present to businesses and service clubs to assist in funding. W

Our Board of Directors believes in the program and has the expertise to get things done. Without the willingness of the board, Upper Fraser Valley Crime Stoppers could not function. A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone involved.

The ball is rolling. Our first reenactment will begin shortly, courtesy of Shaw. Brochures and flyers are on the way for the Board to deliver. Our TIPS process is being overhauled and should be enhanced shortly. Even in the face of adversity we are continually learning and improving.

how Long Should We hold Money for a Tip Payout?

It was a hugely successful 2012 for the Cowichan Crime Stoppers. We raised over $6,000 in our first Jail-A-Thon by arresting 12 of Duncan’s not-so-upstanding citizens. All those in attendance had a great time. A special thanks to the Mayor, the Cowichan Tribes, the R.C.M.P. and all the local businesses and organizations involved.

Can you advise as to the length of time we are required to hold back funds for those claims made in respect of tips to be paid out. We currently have approved tip payouts that have not been collected and they remain as a liability in our records.  How long do they stay there?  I don’t see anything in our charter for this.

I think most boards carry unpaid rewards on their books for 2 years.  If not collected in that time, the unpaid tip is taken back into revenue. Of course, if the tipster surfaces after that time, he/she should still receive the reward, but it would have to be approved by the Board all over again.
