About CrewFactors

The benefits of this new crew training technology?• Monitor training standards.• Identify high risk scenarios (relating to comms/team coordination). • Mine data for trend analysis.• Adapt crew training towards personalised learning models.

• CrewFactors PRO evaluation day at XXXX training facility.• Participants

• Pilot1 • Pilot2• Crewfactors technician

• Evaluation Format• Training captains discussed and formulated 4 LOFT scenarios that

would require high levels of communication and teamwork to successfully complete the flight task/scenario.

• Secured a two hour training slot in the A320 sim to undertake these various scenarios and utilise the CrewFactors PRO training tool, to record and process crew communication.

CrewFactors Metric

Explanation Grades

Team Score Indicates your communication performance level as a team during the task. It indicates how good you were at cooperating, cooperating and communicating clearly with each other while completing the task.

0.65 Excellent 0.60 Good/Exc 0.55 Good 0.50 Good/Mod 0.45 Moderate 0.40 Mod/unsatis< 0.40 Unsatisfactory

Balance The balance chart is a measure of the individual effort to cooperate with your team partner while completing the task. It indicates whether communication effort between partners was balanced during the task or whether one participant was making more of an effort to communicate clearly.

Optimal is 50/50 but is context/task dependent (need for comparison data). Lower number is leading communication and higher number person who is accommodating most.

Speaking Time The percentage of time speaker A & B are talking in a 60second period (note; we assume silence is either listening or thinking)

Context/task dependent (need for comparison data)

Overlap The overlap score indicates how engaged the team was during the task. A high score indicates that participants were highly engaged and talking over each other for prolonged periods during the task.

Context/task dependent (need for comparison data)

Task #1Descriptor Thrust Lever Fault on Intermediate Approach. Weather induced single engine

go-around with emergency turn. Milan Malpensa RWY35R

Duration 20mins

Task impact on crew

• Difficulty 3

• Workload 3

• Stress 3

Notechs focus Post failure workload management and control, contingency planning (communication and workload management)Go around decision making.

Instructor observation points Failure event, Final landing wind readout (Outside limits)Emergency turn handling, Landing airport decision

Other comments Low stress failure event but unexpected go-around close to the runway results in an unfamiliar go-around technique due to one engine inoperative and the high terrain. Fuel is very limited requiring a clear landing plan.

Overall rating 3

• No performance metrics available; recording completed with mic on shirt pocket…quality wasn’t good enough.

• Follow on recordings were successfully made with mic positioned on mouthpiece of headphones in the sim).

Task #2Descriptor Flaps Jammed on departure (Heavy Weight)

Duration 20mins

Task impact on crew

• Difficulty 3

• Workload 3

• Stress 4

Notechs focus Initial Communication during failure and return planningDecision making after failure event

Instructor observation points Post departure event (high stress until speed is controlled)Decision making once levelApproach prep and subsequent communications

Other comments Initial high stress load requiring quick action to assess the failure and control airspeed to avoid over-speeding flaps. Remainder of event more slow paced, no fuel issues but decision on diversion/return and subsequent planning and communications.

Task #3Descriptor N1 over-speed leading to engine shut down on departure

Duration 15 mins

Task impact on crew

• Difficulty 3

• Workload 3

• Stress 3

Notechs focus Communications, workload management, decision making.

Instructor observation points TBD

Other comments High impact failure with moderate controllability issues. Once stabilised again requires decision on destination and communications. No fuel /time implications
